Watch Now: First Trailer For ‘Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1′

Remember that itty bitty peek at Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1 we posted the other day? We thought that’d be it until later tonight when the movie’s young stars appear at the The 2011 MTV Movie Awards to introduce new footage from the film, but as it turns out, the full teaser trailer is now online.
Watch the trailer here below.
The tiny peek video centered around Bella and Edward’s impending nuptials and the teaser trailer is more of the same, as guests get their wedding invites, some of whom are not at all pleased by the event (you can guess who). There’s even a first-look at the bride on her wedding day, as well as what fans really want to see — the wedding night. Oh, and it ends with Bella noticing something strange happening while she’s still on her honeymoon (you guys know what I’m talking about!) [...]

DVD Review: The Green Hornet (2011)

The Green Hornet
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Michel Gondry
Starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos, Tom Wilkinson
Release date: May 3, 2011
Since the release of X-Men back in 2000 studios have been snapping up comic book properties like new release day at Golden Apple Comics with an eye towards turning them into big screen blockbuster franchises. Over the past decade the business of making movies based on superhero comics has become a virtual bloodsport and the major casualties are usually those adapted from material no one has ever really heard of, or at least the characters who aren’t considered to be in the “mainstream”.
If you don’t believe me just ask the people responsible for making The Shadow (1994) and The Phantom (1996). Even Dick Tracy (1990), despite packing a metric ton of star power (for the early ’90s), was barely able to break even at the box office. But those characters came from a different and substantially less cynical era, a time when Stan “The Man” Lee was still being referred to as Stanley Leiber and names like Chris Claremont, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, Garth Ennis, Ed Brubaker, and Steve Bissette were decades away from prominence in the comics industry. Superhero comics first emerged during the Great Depression, a period in American history when the need for escapist delights were stronger than they ever were or ever would be. [...]

Book Review: The Black Prism: Lightbringer #1 by Brent Weeks
 |
Posted by Darkeva | June 5th, 2011 at 11:47 am |

The Black Prism
Lightbringer Book 1
By Brent Weeks
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle
Orbit
Release Date: August 25, 2010
The Black Prism marks a new series for fantasy writer Brent Weeks, this one called the Lightbringer series. In the first volume, Gavin Guile is a powerful and imposing emperor who is also the Prism, but he finds out that he has a son, and he has to protect him from his enemies. Weeks’ strength is definitely in world-building, and this book proves no exception, featuring a unique magic system that relies on colors and the perceptions of color to indicate the strength of a mage. Kip is the previously mentioned bastard son of Guile, and starts off with a unique voice in the narrative.
Description is another of Weeks’ strengths, and he integrates it well with the plot, characterization, and dialogue. For fans of epic fantasy that isn’t pseudo-medieval or sword and sorcery inspired, Weeks is another great writer to add to your TBR file. If you’ve enjoyed the books of Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams, and Steven Erikson, you’ll enjoy this series. However, as with many epic fantasies of this scope and nature, the authors devotes a lot of time for “getting to know you” type of character scenes that serve as establishing why we should feel sympathy for a particular person. Although he starts out strongly, Kip is average in this regard. Although I felt for his plight and his situation, he didn’t grab me as much as I hoped he would [...]

Movie Review: X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class
Directed by Matthew Vaughn
Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones, Nicholas Hoult
Release Date: June 3, 2011
Wow. That’s the only word I could muster to describe my feelings for X-Men: First Class when the movie was over. The last movie to have that kind of effect on me was Inception.
The year is 1962. As relations between the United States and Russia become further strained over the nuclear arms race, another major plot is brewing. C.I.A. agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) has discovered that the elusive Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and his associate Emma Frost (January Jones) are bribing important military officials serving under President John F. Kennedy into forcing the nation into a confrontation with the Russians that could possibly lead to an all-out nuclear war. But Shaw and Frost are soon revealed to be powerful mutants, Shaw having the ability to harness any amount or level of energy and use it to his own advantage, and Frost the ability to change the form of her body into near-invulnerable diamonds and to protect her thoughts from the intrusion of telepaths. MacTaggert presents this revelation to her superiors, who not surprisingly don’t believe her, nor do they find mush satisfaction with the young agent’s idea of fighting fire with fire by bringing in someone who might be able to help the C.I.A. bring Shaw to justice — a recent Oxford graduate named Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). Xavier, or I should say Professor Xavier, has the power to not only read the thoughts of others, but to communicate with them and control their actions and perceptions through those thoughts. He’s also an idealist who agrees to assist the government in the hope that it will make the conditions safer for his fellow mutants to reveal themselves to the world, including his best friend and adopted sister Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), a shape-shifter who is wary of her natural blue and scaly appearance [...]

Must See: Real Vampire Hunting Kit From The Late 1800s

On October 12 in the year 1890—seven years before Bram Stoker’s classic, Dracula, arrived (the “vampire” itself has existed in folklore for centuries)—a man named Andrew A. Kauffman wrote a letter to a Mrs. Eberhardt, informing her that he had slain the vampire that had killed the woman’s daughter. The letter reads “I have dispatched the vampir that took your sweet daughters life. Included in this case are the tools used in the final act along with proof of its death. Mildredas life was too innocent to be taken by such a monster; she was dearly loved by me as we were newly betrothed. May she now rest in peace.”
Though it’s obvious now that this man killed some kind of animal—most likely a dog or some kind of wolf—this proof of how different times once were is amazing to see. You can check out the pictures of the vampire killing kit, the letter, and even a photograph of dear Mildred below. [...]

Want To See Some Live-Action ‘Fallout’? You Can Help Make It Happen!

If one had to assume, the chances of us ever seeing an actual live-action movie based on the hit Bethesda video game franchise, Fallout, are incredibly unlikely. Yes, there was that script way back when that was a fun read, but the movie was sadly never made. So that basically leaves we the fans one option: make it yourself! And that’s exactly what filmmaker Zack Finfrock did, co-writing (along with Brian Clevinger), co-directing (with Julian Higgins), and starring in their own short fan film titled Fallout: Nuka Break with actors Tybee Diskin, Aaron Giles, and others.
But the group doesn’t want to stop there—they want to turn their short into a web series, but can’t do it alone, so they’ve begun a campaign for those who want to help see it happen. Be sure to continue on over to the other side where you can see the original short fan film and decide whether you want to help this little post-apocalyptic dream come true. [...]

E3 2011 Preview: The ‘Batman: Arkham City’ Batarang Controller For Xbox 360, PS3

The always exciting E3 video game convention will take place this upcoming week, and rumors and buzz about what exciting new games and footage might be shown off abound.
Until the convention actually gets here, some smaller goodies are being offered to keep our eager eyes at bay. One of these goodies is the new Batarang video game controllers created by POWER A, specially made for the highly anticipated sequel to Rocksteady Games’ Batman: Arkham Asylum, titled Batman: Arkham City.
Controllers for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were created, and both offer a flashy new Batman-themed product for those of you who are into the more unique controller for your gaming adventures.
You can see what the two controllers look like by clicking on over to the other side now!
The only unfortunate thing about these new items is that the Xbox 360 version is wired. It’s unclear why, and it’s unlikely that many gamers these days are going to be jumping at at a wired anything, but the PS3 version is still wireless for those of you who have access to that console. [...]

DC Relaunch: Digital Pricing and Combo Packs
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | June 3rd, 2011 at 10:32 pm |

DC Comics took a bold step on this week when they announced their digital pricing scale, while also introducing the very first Comic Book Combo Pack. Okay, so this is a little crazy, especially when we get to the pricing scale. But here are the details: On Wednesday, August 31, 2011, DC Comics will be releasing a combo pack with a physical copy of a single-issue comic starting with Justice League #1 that contains a special code that allows buyers of the physical comic to download the digital copy of the same comic.
That sounds great, right? Just like a Blu-ray! Well, yes and no. Yes, DC finally released the pricing scale for the upcoming comics, and it’s a little bit confusing. But let me try to clarify. When the comics are released, we’ll see the physical comics and digital comics released on the same day, but the price for the digital copy will be the same as the physical copy, and if you want to get the combo pack, you can simply shell out an extra dollar for that sucker! DC Relaunch: The New Lanterns
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | June 3rd, 2011 at 6:55 pm |

Fans of one of the top selling franchises of DC Comics‘ Green Lantern can breathe a sigh of relief today, as the comic book publishing company has announced their line of Green Lantern titles that are coming in September, and things seem pretty interesting.

First, we have the no-surprises title, Green Lantern #1. Not much information has been given with the exception of the creative team of Geoff Johns holding up his writing duties with art from Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy, with a cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. The interesting item here is that DC doesn’t give a name for the actual Green Lantern that will be the main focus of the title, but since we’ve seen Hal Jordan on the cover of Justice League #1, I suspect Hal Jordan will be the main man of this title [...]

Real Or Fake: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Viral Videos Hint At Arkham Asylum Breakout

A few new short videos have hit the web, and they have people trying to figure out whether they’re part of Warner Brothers’ viral marketing campaign for director Christopher Nolan‘s massive trilogy-maker, The Dark Knight Rises, or if they’re just a crafty fan helping to add some buzz to the movie.
All three videos were posted on YouTube by a user called The Fire Rises, which is the same name on Twitter that revealed the first image we saw of Tom Hardy as Bane not too long ago. Each video is very chaotic and hard to follow, but they do suggest that there has been a massive breakout at the infamous Arkham Asylum, and that anarchy now reigns. All three videos also use that haunting chant we heard on the official Dark Knight Rises website…which, interestingly enough, doesn’t seem to be there anymore.
You can see all three videos for yourself by clicking on over to the other side now, and let us know whether you think they’re real (and effective), or completely fake. [...]

DC Relaunch: 11 New DC Titles Announced
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | June 3rd, 2011 at 1:59 pm |

Well, DC Comics just won’t stop, will they? After a brutal couple of days of teasing the comic book fan universe with “new” and “exciting” steps into the “future” of DC Comics, on Thursday, June 2, 2011, they actually started rolling out some of the details about the upcoming “relaunch” of the DC Universe. And regardless of what I may or may not have said regarding the initial announcement, I can’t help but be excited about the second wave of DC Relaunch news. On Thursday, DC released the names and creators of 11 of the 52 new number one comics that are coming out in September, along with cover art, and those are as follows (with added commentary and how excited I am for each):
Justice League #1: Written by Geoff Johns, with art by Jim Lee. I mean, this is a bit obvious, isn’t it? We found out that this was coming on Tuesday, so it’s no surprise to see it listed here. Geoff Johns can handle teams, and who can argue with Jim Lee’s artwork? You can criticize his character redesigns, but there’s no doubt that this book is going to be a heavy hitter from front to back each month. Let’s just hope these two executives are able to give The Justice League the attention it deserves, so it won’t be plagued with delays. Yeah, yeah, I’ll buy it! [...]

Interview: Ozzy Osbourne Guitarist Gus G.
 |
Posted by Obi-Dan | June 3rd, 2011 at 12:37 pm |

If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed with Ozzy Osbourne it’s that he will be accompanied by an incredible guitarist. In his 30-year solo career very few have been chosen for this role. Now, lighting up the fret board is Greek guitar genius, Gus G.
The guitarist agreed to down-axe and talk with me about joining up with one of his idols, the possibility of a new Ozzy album, and setting up his own band, Firewind.
Geeks of Doom: So how are you?
Gus G.: Yeah, I’m fine. I just woke up actually! But it’s cool.
Geeks of Doom: Next month you head out across Europe with Ozzy and with Firewind for the summer. What are you up to right now?
Gus G.: Well I’m at home in Greece and I’ve been doing a bunch of stuff, catching up on stuff because I’ve been on tour for a year. So, you know, going home after almost a whole year with no break you got to take care of a lot of things. To be honest with you I’ve been practicing a lot of Ozzy songs…we are going to be rehearsing stuff from Blizzard [Of Ozz album] and Diary [Of A Madman album] he hasn’t done before so hopefully that will be on the setlist.
Geeks of Doom: Yeah, this year it’s the 30th anniversary of Diary of a Madman, and also the 25th anniversary of The Ultimate Sin. So have you got anything special planned for the live shows? [...]

Watch Now: Full Trailer For ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’

The full-length trailer for the latest in the Planet of the Apes saga, a long-in-development prequel entitled Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has debuted and you can watch it below.
The last time 20th Century Fox attempted to reboot their valuable Planet of the Apes franchise the result was Tim Burton’s 2001 “reimagining” that despite being one of that year’s biggest hits was little more than a mediocre summer action picture that was heavily compromised in the rush to meet the release date that had been locked down before the movie even went before the cameras. A decade later and the studio has decided to give it another shot, but this time it looks like they may have done it right and created an Apes installment that could measure up to the best of the original film series, which debuted with the modern classic Planet of the Apes in 1968 and concluded with Battle for the Planet of the Apes in 1973 (not counting the live-action and animated television spin-offs that followed in the wake of the release of Battle) [...]

Tron: Betrayal
Paperback
Writer: Jai Nitz
Pencils: Andie Tong and Jeff Matsuda
Inks: Pete Pantazis
Marvel Comics
Release Date: November 16, 2010
In the nearly thirty years between the events of Tron and Tron: Legacy, a lot has happened in Kevin Flynn’s life. Legacy gives the viewer all the basic information needed to understand and enjoy the events that take place, but for those who want the whole story, Tron: Betrayal gives you that and much more.
Kevin Flynn is a man torn between two worlds. In the real world he is the head of ENCOM, a Fortune 500 corporation, and a father-to-be. He is also the creator of a digital world that has undergone some drastic change in its short existence. The program TRON helps to keep order and security in the grid while Flynn is gone, but the expanding world needs more than just order. The amount of attention needed in both worlds has run Flynn down, so he creates CLU, a program in his own image to run the grid in his stead. CLU is charged by Flynn with creating “the perfect system” and he takes this task very seriously, going to extreme lengths to ensure its success. As a divide begins between CLU and Flynn’s definition of perfection, Flynn’s real-world responsibilities keep him away from the grid for longer periods of time than usual. The division between the grid’s creator and its supervisor is reaching a boiling point, all while Flynn is trying to raise his newborn son and still maintain an active role at ENCOM [...]

Convention Report: Comicpalooza 2011
 |
Posted by wgillis | June 2nd, 2011 at 2:39 pm |

During Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29, 2011), Comicpalooza held its 4th annual multi-genre convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. I attended the first two days of this three-day convention. First of all, this was my first big convention in Texas and the layout of the convention center was massive. The whole convention took place on the 3rd level of this massive convention center.
The highlights of the convention for me were the opportunities to interact with comic creators, comic fans, and celebrities. I spent a short amount of time on Friday observing the entire Con floor and chatting with various artists and writers in Artist Alley. I also checked out a few things in the Dealers Room. Before leaving for the day, I sat in on panel with comic writer Chris Roberson (I-Zombie), Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies), and Brian Denham (Zombie Fairy Tales) on a panel titled Comics & Zombies. By the name of the panel, you can guess what was discussed [...]
