Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

While taking a beating at the DC Comics New 52 panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio offered up a few bits of interesting information that did get reaction — good and bad — from the packed house.

DiDio question after question regarding Wally West, a staple in the Flash family that has been missing from the DC Universe for quite some time, at least in a major role. DiDio explained that the main goal of the new 52 is to focus the stories on one character making it easier for new readers to jump into the books. For now, and the foreseeable future that character, when it comes to Flash, is Barry Allen. Many audience members complained that there are still going to be multiple Robins, so there should be multiple Flash’s. DiDio stuck to his guns though. In an attempt to assuage some tensions about the history of the characters, DiDio and team explained that the histories that we all know and love aren’t being forgotten, just retold and modernized in one issue, the first of these new series.

If you aren’t in the know, DC Comics will be relaunching and rebooting (to varying degrees) 52 of their series and characters starting in September. These relaunches include freshened up stories and new costumes. Superman’s costume got very little love from this particular audience. Many points of contention from fans were mostly ignored by the panel including the perceived high price of the digital comics. In the lengthy Q&A, price reductions were requested but there was no response from the panel.

In a bit of news that garnered more favorable response from the cynical crowd, the face of DC announced that there will be a second T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents series written by Nick Spencer starting in November. The always jovial DiDio offered up no other information about the series in the panel.

  3. I was at the panel and have these thoughts:

    1.  New 52 didn’t really sound new.  They are continuing from a simplified history that apparently will be covered in the first couple of issues that will basically be key points of what we all remember as the history anyway.

    2.  I thought DC was skewered on the comment that 1% — down from 12% — of their staff are female, and Dan Didio implied that no women were qualified to work on his staff.  I felt embarrassed for them as an organization.  Terrible.  It should be obvious that if you have no women, you do not have the best staff assembled.  Dan seemed to have no answer or comment for this embarrassing revelation.

    3.  The only things being removed are newer events that they don’t seem to like.  Specifically, they are destroying evolution of Flashes (Wally West) and Batgirl (Stephanie Brown), insisting that they need to cater to public domain knowledge of “who batgirl is” from apparently 1960s TV.
