SDCC 2011: The Raven panel: John Cusack

James McTeigue, director of The Raven, made an appearance at the Relativity Media panel today at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 to debut the trailer for the upcoming thriller. Also on the panel were stars John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans. They all talked about filming the movie in Serbia during winter and also about their research regarding Poe’s life and his stories. Alice Eve talked about getting mouthfuls of dirt while filming her “buried alive” scenes.

The film revolves around the last five days of author Edgar Allan Poe‘s life in the mid-1800s in Baltimore. In real life, little is known about those days, so the filmmakers took the liberty of turning that time into a murder-mystery based on Poe’s actual stories. In The Raven, Poe (played by John Cusack) must team up with a young inspector detective (Luke Evans) to find a serial killer who’s murdering his victims based on events from Poe’s macabre tales.

In the trailer, the police begin to uncover the bodies of brutally murdered victims. The way in which they are murdered is exactly the methods described in the stories of Edgar Allan Poe. At first, the young Inspector Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) investigating the case assumes that Poe himself has something to do with the murders, but soon after dealing with the eccentric author, Fields quickly realizes although Poe is a raging alcohol and a difficult person, he’s not a murderer. Someone else is behind the killings. But Fields needs Poe’s twisted mind to help him figure out the murder’s next step and put an end to the murders. We see the bodies of more victims, which contain clues left by the murderer. We also see another victim set up to die like Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum. The killer wants to engage Poe, so he kidnaps Poe’s love Emily (Alice Eve) and buries her alive, just like it happens in one of Poe’s stories, and Poe has to figure out the clues before Emily dies. “He will keep her alive to keep him involved,” says Fields. “No matter what happens I will kill him,” says Poe. We get a glimpse of a character who seems like he’s the killer, he’s dressed in a long back cape with a wide brimmed black hat (looks a lot like V from McTeigue’s V for Vendetta).
