Universal Decides NOT To Take On Ron Howard’s Massive Adaptation Of Stephen King’s ‘Dark Tower’

Back in September of 2010, a gigantic piece of news came along: director Ron Howard, his Imagine Entertainment partner, Brian Grazer, and writer Akiva Goldsman were developing an absolutely astonishing three–film, two–season TV series combo package based on Stephen King‘s seven–book series, The Dark Tower.
The announcement was unheard of, and Howard and his team had a deal in place with Universal Pictures and NBC Universal that would give him the freedom to film most of it together, much like Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings…meaning the studio had to have the ultimate confidence in the project. The plan was for Goldsman to write the first film’s script and the first season of the TV show, with Howard directing. The first movie was to be followed by the first season of the TV series—which would fill in many of the story details and bridge the first and second movies—and then the second movie would be followed by a prequel season of the TV series before the final film hit. They even had Javier Bardem attached to star in the movies and first season of the show. [...]

Watch Now: Red Band ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Clip

Lionsgate has just released a new red band clip from their upcoming Conan the Barbarian 3D. You can watch the new clip here below.
It’s a 3-minute clip showing young Conan kicking serious ass after being ambushed by enemies of his people in a snowy forest. It’s a damn good scene loaded with plenty of spilled blood, severed heads, and broken bones. I can certainly get behind some quality carnage any day so this was a nice little surprise to wake up to. But the scene starts off strangely with Kid Conan (Hey there’s a potential franchise), played by Leo Howard, and some of the other kids in his village having to run through the forest and up some hills while carrying eggs in their mouths. Seriously. Is this how Cimmerians are trained for battle? Ron Perlman is in this clip giving the speech that can be heard in the trailers about when a Cimmerian feels thirst it’s for blood and when he feels cold it’s the cold edge of steel and yada yada yada, but I’m trying to figure out how eggs fit into the equation. At least the egg bit has a nice payoff at the end of the scene [...]

Geek Deal: Duela Dent as The Joker Statue
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | July 19th, 2011 at 11:54 am |

Normally, this is where I would link a great comic book deal from Thwipster, but in this case I’ll be linking a great statue deal from the company.
You see, Thwipster’s Tuesday comic book deal was the first volume of Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá‘s Casanova: Luxuria, but within an hour and a half the 46 percent off trade paperback was sold out! There is however a great deal now on an awesome DC Direct PVC statue in the Ame-Comi line. Duela Dent as The Joker is one of the newer statues in the line, but it’s received a lot of praise. The statue stands at 9.5 inches tall, and features Two-Face’s daughter as a steampunk version of The Joker. The standard retail price is $70.00, but only at Thwipster, and only for Tuesday can you find it for a mere $36.99, which is 47% off for those of you who aren’t math majors [...]

Kevin Costner Continues Comeback With Villainous Role In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Kevin Costner has been the butt of many jokes over the years before the actor seemed to disappear for while to focus on other things, including his efforts to try and help clean up after the Gulf Coast oil spill a couple of years ago. Apart from a two–year absence from 2003 to 2005, he has continued to act, but keeping it to a movie per year or so and keeping himself out of the spotlight for the most part.
Now it appears he wants to make something of a comeback with some very intriguing supporting roles.
We first found out Costner was going to play the man that will raise Superman, Jonathan Kent, in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Now comes word that Costner has joined the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western, Django Unchained. Costner will play a villain in the movie, a man who trains the slaves to fight so they can battle to the death for the amusement of slavemaster Leonardo DiCaprio. [...]

Book Review: Joe Simon: My Life in Comics

Joe Simon: My Life in Comics
The Illustrated Autobiography of Joe Simon
Written by Joe Simon
Hardcover
Titan Books
Release date: June 21, 2011
I am a big fan of books that cover comic book history, particularly the golden age of comics. Joe Simon: My Life in Comics takes a look at that period through the eyes of the man who helped create Captain America, and I was looking forward to reading it. My Life in Comics turned out to be almost everything I had hoped for, but came up a little short. There are a lot of good anecdotes to be found in this book, I just wish certain events in Joe Simon’s life had been looked at a little longer.
Joe Simon is perhaps most famous for joining with Jack Kirby to create the Captain America character in 1941, but he was responsible for much more than that. Before there was Jack and Stan Lee, there was Simon and Kirby, creating thousands of pages worth of entertainment and hundreds of characters that live on to this day. My Life in Comics looks at Simon’s life, from his childhood days, through his prolific career, into his twilight years. Simon tells the story of how he and Kirby jumped from publisher to publisher as different ideas were created. The autobiography spends most of its time dealing with the partnership and friendship between Simon and Kirby [...]

DC Relaunch: ‘DC Comics: The New 52′ Hardcover Collection Coming In December
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | July 18th, 2011 at 8:01 pm |

File this one under “You’ve gotta be freaking kidding me.” DC Comics announced today that all of their #1 September releases will be collected in a massive 1,216-page hardcover called DC Comics: The New 52 to be released on December 7, 2011.
Yeah, I know. I seriously cannot believe this. I mean, I want it, but still. This definitely falls on the side of being ridiculous. Sure, the relaunch is unprecedented, and absolutely there will be collectors out there who will be more than willing to shell out the insanely priced $150, but come on. Unless there is some sort of weaving plot thread to go between these books, what’s the real point in buying this? Would it ever be read? [...]

DC Relaunch: The New Superman
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | July 18th, 2011 at 5:08 pm |

On Monday, DC Comics announced the all-new origin and costume for The Man of Steel. Get ready folks, because we’re in store for an angry comments section. Why? Just wait and see.
Action Comics #1 (cover shown below) will be written by my favorite writer Grant Morrison with art duties from Rags Morales, artist of the amazingly popular Identity Crisis. And in the hands of anyone else, I’d be worried, but I suspect plenty of you will still be worried, if not furious.
So, let’s get to it [...]

Watch Now: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Teaser Trailer
 |
Posted by MK2Fac3 | July 18th, 2011 at 4:44 pm |

After a week of bootlegs and crowded Harry Potter screenings, the official teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises finally hits the Internet in a legitimate way.
Watch it here below.
The teaser trailer is just that, a tease. For those who haven’t analyzed this trailer, let me pick up the slack. In the teaser, we are primarily shown previously seen footage mainly from Batman Begins, the first in Nolan’s Batman trilogy. One can only assume that this is done to hammer home the finality of The Dark Knight Rises. Then we surprisingly get some new footage [...]

Watch Now: New ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Trailers & TV Spots

20th Century Fox is starting to ramp up the promotional campaign for Rise of the Planet of the Apes as the movie’s August 5 release date fast approaches. Just recently the studio released a pair of television spots and new domestic and international trailers. If you’ve seen any of the previously released trailers, you won’t find much new in these videos. The international trailer probably contains some extra shots, but I’ve seen it all before. You can watch the new videos and trailers here below.
Still, I love the look of the film so far. The CGI motion-capture on the apes looks amazing to the point where even in their brief appearances you feel a great deal of sympathy for them, especially in the lead performance by Andy Serkis as Caesar. But with the exception of John Lithgow, the human actors don’t fare as well in these trailers. I hope it’s just a case of the promo materials holding back [...]

Movie Review: Farmageddon

Farmageddon
DIRECTED BY: Kristin Canty
FEATURING: Jackie Stowers, Linda Faillace, Barbara and Steve Smith, Eric Wagoner, Joel Salatin, Mark McAfee
Kristin Marie Productions
RELEASE DATE: July 8, 2011 (limited)
Back in 2008, the curtain was pulled back on the food industry in a documentary titled Food Inc., which gave us a horrific look at the large food corporations and their horrific practices, as well as the damage they’re doing to small American farms. And like any well–done documentary like it, the movie infuriated the masses, sparking an outlash toward these corporations in hopes of setting things right.
Although a lot of work still needs to be done in that area, unfortunately it also doesn’t end there. There’s many layers of the food industry we don’t see, and therefore don’t know of. Out of sight, out of mind. Which is why it’s so important for people to tell their stories and inform the public of what’s really going on; the more people that know about these things, the more voices you have fighting against it. And that’s what it’s all about: finding the voices to fight the wrongs, like real–life superheroes. [...]

15 New Images From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Released

Some solid new images from Columbia Pictures’ upcoming reboot of the Spider–Man franchise, titled The Amazing Spider–Man, have been released online via Entertainment Weekly.
The new images offer up quite a bit to look at…and perhaps criticize for the good and/or bad. You’ll see some more peeks at star Andrew Garfield in full Spidey costume, his homemade web–shooters, and sans–costume trying out his powers on the subway, on the basketball court, and setting another student straight at school. You’ll see some of Garfield with love interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and with Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Also shown off is a couple of looks at villain Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) and Gwen’s dad, George Stacy (Denis Leary).
You can see all 15 new images by clicking on over to the other side now! [...]
