New Ultimate Spider-Man

Marvel comics has been teasing for a while that there will be an all-new character taking over the costumed identity of Spider-Man over in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man and today they have made the official reveal.

The character’s name is Miles Morales, and he is a just your regular teenager from New York who will learn that with great power comes, well, you know the rest. The big surprise that is making waves around the comics community is that the character will, shock upon shock, be half-black, half-Hispanic. The character will make his first appearance in the pages of Ultimate Comics Fallout #4, out in stores on August 3, 2011 and will then go on to star in the new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1, which comes out on September 14, 2011.

Check out the preview images from Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 here below.

Miles MoralesFallout #4 features stories written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, and Nick Spencer with art by Sara Pichelli, Salvador Larroca, and Clayton Crain. Once Ultimate Spider-Man relaunches, it will be written by Bendis and will be drawn by Pichelli.

The news was initially released on USA Today, and if you made the mistake of venturing into the Comments section (which, shame on you to begin with) you may have seen some particularly disgusting reactions to the news. Honestly, I don’t see what the big deal is. After the events of Death of Spider-Man, we knew that a new character was going to be taking over, so that’s not really a surprise. The only thing to be “shocked” about is the character’s ethnicity, and what difference does that really make? The story was always going to be about a new character trying to live up to the model of heroism that was established by Peter Parker. It doesn’t matter what the background of the character is, that’s all just set dressing. What’s important is how the writer will tell that story.

Ultimate Fallout #4You could argue that Marvel is pandering to a portion of the audience that is asking for more culturally diverse characters, and that’s certainly possible. I can’t tell if Marvel is pandering with this story because I haven’t read it yet. If the story is executed well, it’s not pandering. If the story is poorly written and it’s obvious that the character’s race was changed just to try and get a few readers interested, then yes, they would be guilty of pandering to that audience. If the most interesting thing about the character is his ethnicity, then he’s a crappy character, and it does get me a little worried when Marvel makes the character’s ethnicity the center of their advertising. However, I think that Bendis is going to be able to make the character unique, and that his ethnicity will just be one facet of the character. I have to reserve judgment on it until I’ve read the story.

So my message is, calm down. It’s just comics. If you don’t like the direction that Marvel is taking Ultimate Spider-Man in, stop reading. It’s as simple as that. If you’ve been reading Ultimate Spider-Man for a while, you should have a certain amount of faith that Bendis will tell an interesting story with interesting characters. If this move prompts people to read Ultimate Spider-Man for the first time, awesome! Bendis is a great writer and Pichelli is a great artist who is just emerging in the business. She’s going to be a big name in a few years, so get in on the ground floor.

If you’ve been reading the series, will you still be picking up Ultimate Spider-Man, and if you haven’t been reading it, will this get you to take a chance on it?

  1. I completely agree! It doesn’t matter what race a character is. In fact, I think a half-black, half-Hispanic Spider-Man will make the story interesting because we’ll see the Ultimate Universe from a different view. I’ve already made a whole bunch of links to his wiki page on Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, in alternate versions of Spider-Man, and in the boxes below.

  2. People are too hung up on the race. They’ll never sell a character based solely on the race, just ask Spider-man 2099, Miguel O’hara. If there aren’t interesting stories, the book won’t sell.

I’m upset that they killed of Peter Parker at all, but I’m interested to see where they go with Miles.

  5. Hey you are right, now let’s make captain america black And the black panther white.

It’s not exactly the race that people(or at least me) are concerned about it’s the fact that Spider-man IS Peter Parker and that Spider-man is a symbol, not just a comic. you just can’t go and kill him off to bring someone else in the picture. I mean you have to think about it, it’s millions of people’s childhood hero we are talking about, not JUST a comic.

  7. Essentially you’re saying they should NOT change anything about Spidey because someone somewhere has fond memories of Peter Parker. That is your logic whether or not that is what you meant is up to interpretation, but either way it’s wrong because a comic is really a living breathing thing subject to change. In fact change is ESSENTIAL to comics.

  9. Spider-Man was always Peter Parker, and still is in the regular Marvel Universe. But Ultimate was made so we could restart and do things differently. Peter is still around but in this universe another person is getting a chance at the costume that allows anybody to be Spider-Man. Anyone who wants Peter can still read Amazing Spider-Man.

  10. This isn’t exactly a new practice thought – > http://www.ranker.com/list/12-african-american-heroes-who-replaced-white-ones/eric-diaz

  11. Why can’t Captain America be black? I’m actually really excited that’s he’s black. And u are kind of racist.

    Comment by Darren Enriquez — August 4, 2011 @ 10:52 pm

  12. I agree. The reality is that in people’s hearts there’s still racism and they cover it with silly excuses. Comic books stories change and characters die all the time. When Steve Rogers died and was substituted with Bucky NO ONE complained, but if he was substituted by a black character people would’ve made a fuzz. I’m saddened by the response of people. I think this new direction will breathe new life into a character that’s kind of being run over by the greats like Thor and Iron Man.

    Comment by Darren Enriquez — August 4, 2011 @ 10:55 pm

  13. I agree Darren. Some of my favorite superheroes are of different races and are argued against b/c they replaced another hero. Like Blue Beetle. I’m looking forward to where we go with the new Spider-Man but people are against him b/c of his race. It saddens me.

  14. to all of the ppl who are upset about peter parker dying as the reason they dont like morales as the new guy……this ISNT the only spiderman comics…these are relatively new actually..only 160 issues. u guys still got amazing and spectacular spiderman with good ole peter parker still alive and well. its just a new twist is all

  15. You guys know that they have replaced characters before in comics and nobody said anything.  In DC they replaced the flash with another flash but the replacement was white so no one really cared much about it.  In marvel they have replaced nick fury also. Also this is supposed to be in a different universe…if you want to read about peter parker you can still just read the regular comics

  16. im not fussed about race or ethnicity, more that peter parker IS spiderman.. it has been that way for decades… he is one of the staples in marvel comics… if they wanted to introduce a new character, they could have killed spiderman off and come up with a whole new hero concept not someone to carry on the brand name…ive read the first comic of the new ultimate spiderman and i felt no connection to the character. i feel that big killing of peter parker.. they have rung the death bell of the who ultimate saga.. there was a reason ultimate spiderman was so succesful.. it was a facelift on a character we all ready loved.

  17. I only have one parting query. Peter Parker is a great character many kids including myself have grown up with. I understand that ultimates is a way to expand the marvel universe, but this and marvel zombies are both either heartbreaking or retarded! What genius wants to explore the death of the greatest heroes… then tie up loose ends? If there are no heroes, who can save us now?
