The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards was broadcast live tonight, with Lady Gaga opening the show with a live performance of her song “You and I,” which had the singer dressed in her male 1950s greaser alter ego doing a lengthy opening monologue before breaking into the song.
While Lady Gaga’s music isn’t exactly my thing, I can’t deny she’s an excellent performer, always keeping it interesting. As I watched her do her song in her “Jo Calderone” persona, I was ultra-psyched when midway through the act she introduced Queen’s Brian May to the stage for a lead guitar solo.
Check out the 8-minute video here below, which contains the entire Jo Calderone monologue, as well as the full song with Brian May from the VMAs.
Unbeknownst to me before this minute, May appeared on the song on Gaga’s latest album, Born This Way, therefore, it makes perfect sense that he’d come out for the live performance. From what I’ve read, Lady Gaga is a huge Queen fan and even took her stage name from their hit song “Radio Ga Ga.”
