Comic Review: Kevin Smith’s The Bionic Man #1

Kevin Smith’s The Bionic Man #1
Written by Kevin Smith and Phil Hester
Art by Jonathan Lau
Dynamite Entertainment
$3.99
Release date: August 24, 2011
The last time Colonel Steve Austin was published in comic book form was in June of 1978. Thirty-three years later, Dynamite Entertainment brings him back in The Bionic Man #1. Ladies and gentlemen, it was worth the wait.
For those of you expecting Steve Austin of Six Million Dollar Man fame to be full-on bionic in this issue, you’ll be a little disappointed. But, that’s about the only thing that’s lacking in this first issue. Dynamite made a spectacular decision by putting their A-Team of Phil Hester and Jonathan Lau on this book. The team did a fantastic job adapting Kevin Smith‘s Green Hornet screenplay into a fun, action-packed and all around excellent comic, and to no one’s surprise, they do the same thing here [...]

5 Reasons To See The ‘Fright Night’ Remake

I’m not big on remakes or 3D, so this new Fright Night 3D remake already had two strikes against it just in the title alone. Yet, somehow, the movie won me over. Typically, upon hearing that a film is being remade, I immediately scoff and question why, especially if the original film is a classic that I feel doesn’t need an update.
The remake of 1983′s Fright Night, which is in theaters now, stars Colin Farrell as the vampire Jerry Dandrige and former Doctor Who star David Tennant as vampire slayer Peter Vincent.
Now, if you enjoyed the original movie, you’re probably wondering why you should bother to go see the new version, which was released in both 2D and 3D. While I’m a fan of the original Fright Night, I really like the remake, so I feel there’s room for enjoyment of both films. Therefore, here’s 5 Reasons To See The Fright Night Remake [...]

Doctor Who

Written by Steven Moffat, Stephen Thompson, Neil Gaiman, Matthew Graham

BBC
Warner Home Video
Release Date: July 19, 2011
The BBC release of the first half of Doctor Who Series 6 presents fans a chance to grab a hold of the episodes aired this year before the second half airs on August 27. With fascination with the Time Lord at an all time high in America since the days of Tom Baker, it makes sense that the BBC would officially release Series 6 Part 1 while the time is ripe.
Series 6 of Doctor Who does not kick off immediately after the previous adventures in Series 5. Instead, some time has passed, and companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) have been separated from the Doctor (Matt Smith) for an as of yet unexplained reason. The companions and River Song (Alex Kingston) obtain an invitation in TARDIS-blue envelopes to meet somewhere in the United States at a specific time [...]

Arthur
Blu-ray | DVD | On Demand
Directed by Jason Winer
Starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner, Geraldine James, Luis Guzmán
Warner Bros. Home Video
Release Date: July 15, 2011
Arthur, stars Russell Brand as the title character who’s a rich, alcoholic, heir to a business empire. Through his life, Arthur has squandered his fortune on space suits, a magnetic floating bed, telephone booth aquariums, movie memorabilia, specifically movie cars, and lots and lots of alcohol. After Arthur gets arrested for wrecking the Batmobile from Batman and Robin, Arthur’s mother (Geraldine James), the keeper of the family fortune, gives him an ultimatum: either straighten up and get his life together by marrying Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner), or lose his inheritance. The only problem, Arthur has fallen in love Naomi (Greta Gerwig), a simple woman from Queens. Will Arthur give up everything for the woman he loves? Or will he sacrifice the one he loves for the almighty dollar? You can only find out by watching the movie.
Or by thinking logically if you’ve seen any movie that has this plot, which I’m sure you have since 80 percent of movies in existence all have this premise, according to Hunter Camp’s False Movie Facts. And that’s the main problem with the film [...]

David S. Goyer Talks Impending ‘Invisible Man’ Project
 |
Posted by Cinemumra | August 26th, 2011 at 11:08 am |

Talk about a forgettable project.
Back in 2008, it was announced that writer/director David S. Goyer was set to bring the story of The Invisible Man back to the big screen. Since then, news has gone pretty much cold. Well, Goyer — best known for his contributions to The Dark Knight — has gotten back at it, and is now talking as to what one should expect from the picture, and it sounds, interesting.
Goyer recently chatted with the LA Times, and revealed that the film will be similar to something like the recent Sherlock Holmes film, saying that “it’s a period film, but it’s period like Downey’s Sherlock Holmes.” He also goes on to compare it to something like The Mummy, but then again, that doesn’t really get anyone too excited, does it? [...]

Johnny Depp Takes Another Hunter S. Thompson Ride In ‘The Rum Diary’ Trailer

The long–awaited first trailer for The Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp has finally made its way to the ‘net.
Depp plays Paul Kemp in the story, which is based on Thompson’s novel of the same name. Though the story and characters are fictional, as was the case with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Depp once again plays a character whose path very much embodies the same paths Thompson himself once traveled.
Fans of both Thompson and Fear and Loathing have been itching to get their eyes on this one for a long time now, and it grows ever closer with a release currently set for October 28, 2011.
You can check out the trailer for The Rum Diary by heading below now! [...]

Tom Hardy Compares ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Set To Working At Starbucks
 |
Posted by Cinemumra | August 25th, 2011 at 8:18 pm |

I work at Starbucks. Yes. You know those baristas who dish out lattes at crazy quick speed? That’s this guy. Right here.
Apparently, actor Tom Hardy, in a recent interview, compared working at this lovely establishment to working on the set of his upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises. Yeah, because being Bane is really similar to that of being a slightly pudgy, relatively tall twenty-something with a penchant for adding one too many shots into a person’s iced skinny vanilla latte.
Joking aside, this is an absolute non-story. He stated this claim at Comic-Con in San Diego in July, only to say that he was just using their name as a place holder for any major company [...]

Check Out The Cover Art For ‘Smash! The Incredible Hulk #1′

In October, Marvel’s big green guy gets an all new storyline and a new creative team with Smash! The Incredible Hulk #1.
In typical Marvel Comics fashion, this early along the story elements are mysterious except that in this new story, the Hulk must take on Bruce Banner! Will this take the multiple personality disorder thing to an all new level? Will the two entities actually be split apart and have to face-off for some reason? At this point we can only guess what writer Jason Aaron and artist Mark Silvestri have in store for us.
The first issue lands on store shelves in October with variant cover art by Ladronn (Planet Hulk). No word yet on when we’ll see the new series in a digital form. For now start getting excited for Smash! The Incredible Hulk #1 with this early look at the cover art here [...]

DVD Review: Birdemic: Shock and Terror

Birdemic: Shock and Terror
Starring Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Tippi Hedren, Rick Camp
Directed by James Nguyen
Severin Films
DVD | Blu-Ray
Release Date: February 22, 2011
Meet Rod (Alan Bagh). He does something involving software sales, or computers, or something. Damned if I know. What I do know is that he makes beaucoup bucks doing it so and it also provides him with the freedom to pursue his one true passion: solar paneling for houses. One day he has a chance encounter with Nathalie (Whitney Moore), an aspiring lingerie model who just scored a gig with Victoria’s Secret. Success and wealth unites these two crazy, criminally uninteresting kids in a romance for the ages. To celebrate their blossoming love affair they take a trip to a small California town to walk on the beach, enjoy the local festivities, and then fool around in a cheap motel. Then on a pleasant and sunny morning every eagle and vulture from thousands of miles around decides to attack humanity for no reason whatsoever. Our happy couple and other survivors, who you will be begging the movie gods to kill as slowly and as painfully as possible the moment you see them, are forced to fight their way through a flying flock of foul-tempered feathered fowl if they want to stay alive long enough to have their first Tupperware party and see Dane Cook live in concert.
James Nguyen, the Vietnamese-born writer, director, producer, and executive producer of the schlock killer birds flick Birdemic: Shock and Terror, is such a self-styled jackass amateur that he makes Tommy Wiseau, the director of the modern bad movie classic The Room, look like Howard Hawks in comparison [...]

Watch The Trailer For The Discarded ‘Locke & Key’ Television Series

Last year there were high hopes for a Locke & Key television series based on the IDW comic book by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, with big names like Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci working on the small-screen adaptation that was to air on FOX.
FOX ended up passing on the series and aside from being screened at year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, the pilot episode will apparently never see the light of day at FOX or anywhere else.
If you’re like most fans and didn’t get to see the pilot, you can now check out the trailer for the series to get a glimpse of what this show would have been like. Watch the 2 1/2-minute trailer here [...]

Book Review: Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military

Area 51
An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base
Hardcover | Kindle
Written by Annie Jacobsen
Little, Brown and Company
Release date: May 17, 2011
Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base is an interesting read, as it provides an abundant history of the invention of nuclear weapons and spy planes, most of which took place at a military base that technically never existed: Area 51 in Nevada.
Annie Jacobsen provides fascinating insight and thorough history into the motives of the world’s most powerful men before, during and after the Cold War, that ends in the present day by explaining how unmanned drones save the lives of our many service members in the Middle East and, ultimately, every one of us back home on relatively safe ground.
Okay, so now we know the truth: The United States government does things we don’t know about in places that don’t officially exist. Revelation! Not so much. I’m sure by 2011, most Americans are aware that our government engages in all manner of secret shenanigans in the name of national security. And that sits just fine with me; I don’t have a “need-to-know” about exactly how the CIA, the U.S. Armed Forces, and all the President’s men (and women, but, let’s face it, mostly men) keep one step (and hopefully more) ahead of anyone who may wish to do us harm any more than I have a need-to-know about which fabric softener my favorite rock star uses. But way back in 1951 when Area 51 was created, though certainly not the first top secret government playground, the public had unlimited trust and faith that their leaders always told them the truth. Thanks to Watergate, of course, now we know different [...]

Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America
By Jeff Ryan
Hardcover | Kindle
Portfolio/Penguin
Release date: August 4, 2011
In Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America, author Jeff Ryan gives an insightful and thorough look at the history of the Nintendo corporation through their many successes and failures. The book chronicles three important generations of Nintendo: The Joystick, The D-Pad, and Motion.
I’ve been a Nintendo fan for all of my life. I’ve owned almost every version of the Nintendo gaming console, except for the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube. The images of Mario and his brother Luigi have always been a staple of my gaming history. Born in the early 80s, I’ve had a fondness for the plumber brothers and the many adventures that they have taken [...]

Pay Pal Founder To Help Bring ‘BioShock’ To Life With Real City Of Rapture

Not too long ago we shared that scientist had figured out a way to rewrite the genetic code of a worm, making us naturally think of the insane amounts of genetic alterations happening in the fantastic game, BioShock. But it doesn’t end there, folks. Everyday people are doing things that seem closer and closer to the underwater utopia built by Andrew Ryan, lovingly dubbed Rapture.
Peter Thiel founded the massive money–swapping website, Pay Pal, and also helped fund what would one day become Facebook, both being major factors in his $1.5 billion fortune, which he’s using to partake in some very interesting ventures. He’s also a geek’s dream best friend, fascinated and frustrated by that crazy future, full of unbelievable technological advancements we’ve seen so many times in movies and other forms of entertainment like jetpacks and flying cars, and how we, the human race, have yet to achieve such things. But it’s something much, much bigger than jetpacks that Thiel has invested well over a million dollars into. [...]

The Torchwood TARDISblend 33: The Middle Men and Immortal Sins
 |
Posted by cGt2099 | August 25th, 2011 at 11:00 am |

Torchwood: Miracle Day continues, as the team work their way out of the Overflow Camps to get word out to the world of the horrific consequences of becoming a “Category One Patient”. Meanwhile, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) continues his investigation into those behind Miracle Day. Later, events transpire that pit Jack against Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), while we discover more secrets behind the Miracle as Jack remembers dangerous choices from his past.
During TARDISblend 33, we review the events of The Middle Men and Immortal Sins, we discuss the surprising appearance of Mr. Winston Ghostbusters himself, Eddie Hudson, and the wonderful exposition scene he shared with John Barrowman.
We also look at Captain Jack’s problems when he tries to emulate the Doctor, as we examine the flashbacks in the recent episodes, and ponder the significance of the Triangle Group making their deal for his blood. Speaking of Captain Jack, we (inevitably) debate his sexuality – is he homosexual, bisexual, or omnisexual – because this IS important of course ;)
Finally we throw in a few Classic Torchwood UK recommendations for new fans to check out, and find out what our listeners recently had to say about the podcasts. All this and more on the latest TARDISblend! [...]

David Foster Shares Details On His Proposed Revival Of ‘Star Trek’ As A TV Series

In a recent interview with Trek Web, David Foster talked about a new Star Trek TV series that he’s been developing for around five years now.
Foster began secretly developing the revival in 2006 with Kevin Severson, who sadly passed away in 2010. But Foster has continued developing the project, and recently answered a few questions about his plans at the recent Creation Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Though the series itself is still a ways off from becoming a reality, Foster has big plans, and has a nice little package set up and almost ready to pitch to interested parties. Said package includes an entirely planned out (though open to change, if called for) 5–7 season series with a pilot episode script and a “…conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations.” He also has full character bios, designs for both ships and costumes, and more all ready to go. Production On ‘Wolverine 2′ May Get Pushed Back To 2012

Well, the good news for fans wanting to see Wolverine 2 (also called The Wolverine) has been few and far between since Darren Aronofsky was forced to leave the film.
That trend continues, with word that Twentieth Century Fox is pondering maybe pushing production back from fall of 2011 to spring of 2012. Despite the sequel promising to tell Wolverine’s Samurai storyline in Japan, fans haven’t seemed all that thrilled about the movie after X–Men Origins: Wolverine angered the masses, and so the delay probably wouldn’t bother anyone. Plus, the wait wouldn’t be all that much longer for those of you who do happen to be interested in seeing how they try and make it up to the fans.
Speaking of Japan, it also appears that shooting the film there—as was planned and assumed necessary to convey the proper tones and subtleties needed for the Samurai storyline—might not happen as well. Because of “weather–related considerations,” finding the right locations is proving to be difficult, so Fox may instead need to shoot it in Canada, or at least shoot in both Canada and Japan. [...]
