Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino‘s brilliant, award-winning 1994 underworld epic that was his follow-up to his directorial debut Reservoir Dogs, is finally being released on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate on October 4, 2011. The studio has released a short trailer to promote the release, which you can watch here below.
The film, which Tarantino originally intended to make at Tri-Star Pictures until that studio put the project into turnaround and was ultimately picked up by Miramax, went on to become one of the most financially successful and critically acclaimed independent films released until that time. It helped to transform the fledgling indie studio Miramax into a major industry player and established its co-writer and director as one of the most influential of his generation.
Pulp Fiction won the Palme D’Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as an Academy Award for the original screenplay Tarantino co-wrote with Roger Avary, the future director of Killing Zoe and The Rules of Attraction, and numerous other awards and accolades around the world. Every member of its cast, from established yet fading stars like John Travolta and Bruce Willis to rising talents like Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson, got a huge career boost as a result of Pulp Fiction‘s widespread success. The script is endlessly quotable. The soundtrack sold over two million copies.
The film has been endlessly imitated and parodied and helped to energize the independent film movement that was slowly gaining momentum in the early 1990s thanks to directors like Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Wes Anderson, and David O. Russell and the success and influence of the Sundance Film Festival. There isn’t much more that can be said. Pulp Fiction is a modern cinematic classic and its Blu-ray release is a cause for celebration.
This trailer was considered a little too hot for TV, and may be a bit NSFW if you catch my drift.
Pulp Fiction will be released on Blu-ray on October 4th, 2011.
