As if 3D wasn’t already expensive, it may be getting even more so.
As studios slowly become more and more in love with not only the format of 3D, but the premium prices audiences must pay in order to see a film in 3D, that greed may now be fueling something even bigger; studios forcing people to pay for their very own glasses.
Deadline has revealed that Sony is very seriously considering, along with the likes of Fox and soon other studios, stopping paying the average $0.50 per-pair fee starting this upcoming May. Fox has once before tried this ploy, but alas, nothing came of it when they stopped back in 2009.
Personally, I think this is a bit odd, particularly in today’s economic climate, but this would also make it very hard for studios to justify the premium price point one would pay at, if you yourself brought your own glasses. If shelling out $50-100 a pair means I don’t have to pay $3 extra each time I see a movie, I’ll be down for doing this. However, that’s about as likely as me winning the Pulitzer.
