Sony May Make You Buy Your Own 3D Glasses
space
Cinemumra   |

As if 3D wasn’t already expensive, it may be getting even more so.

As studios slowly become more and more in love with not only the format of 3D, but the premium prices audiences must pay in order to see a film in 3D, that greed may now be fueling something even bigger; studios forcing people to pay for their very own glasses.

Deadline has revealed that Sony is very seriously considering, along with the likes of Fox and soon other studios, stopping paying the average $0.50 per-pair fee starting this upcoming May. Fox has once before tried this ploy, but alas, nothing came of it when they stopped back in 2009.

Personally, I think this is a bit odd, particularly in today’s economic climate, but this would also make it very hard for studios to justify the premium price point one would pay at, if you yourself brought your own glasses. If shelling out $50-100 a pair means I don’t have to pay $3 extra each time I see a movie, I’ll be down for doing this. However, that’s about as likely as me winning the Pulitzer.

  3. At the local cinema (cineworld – UK) you have to pay more to get into the 3D movie, even if you don’t want the 3d glasses.

Personally I won’t go to 3D movies, they are unnecessary, and make me feel dizzy. As more and more people are feeling these symptoms while seeing these movies, it wont be long before this fad once again dies on it’s arse. I hope sony loose millions.

If UK cinemas ever pull the same crap some USA cinemas are pullling and only showing the 3D versions; they wont get a sale from me. And my download of that movie will be ever more satisfying (I wait for the blu ray rip of course). But instead of buying it later on: I wont give them a penny.

  4. In Denmark we already have to pay for glasses when you go to see a movie in 3D. It’s been this way for a long while now.
