J.J. Abrams Officially On Board For ‘Star Trek 2′

Cinemumra   |

JJ Abrams - Star Trek

Well, it’s about damn time.

After months and months of speculation, director J.J. Abrams is now officially on board to helm the sequel to his hugely popular franchise restarter, Star Trek, according to Vulture.

Star Trek 2 is reportedly already underway in the pre-production, with a script set to be handed in by the end of the month, finally getting in front of cameras come winter of this year [...]

DC Relaunch: New DC Comics (Week Three)

MK2Fac3   |

relaunch banner

As most of you may know by now, DC Comics is relaunching their entire line of comics this Fall alongside a day and date digital comics initiative. What you might not know, however, is that it all started two weeks ago with the releases of the last issue of DC’s summer event Flashpoint, and the beginning of the new universe with Justice League #1.

This Wednesday is the second big week of releases. I’m picking up a lot of these books, and there are still a lot of books to look forward to in these upcoming weeks, as well as plenty that you and I will probably want to stay away from for varying reasons. So, in the order of kindness and assignments from my editor, I will be breaking down each title with their creators, what they’re about, and what you can expect from each of the new books. And, guess what? I’m not in love with a lot of the decisions that they’ve made, so this should be fun!

Every Tuesday through the end of September, I will be writing another installment so you know when you can get yourself to the store, or to your mobile app, and purchase your new #1s from DC Comics! Also, it’s worth noting, dear reader, that since you’re coming to the game a little late, you can’t be guaranteed an issue at the comic book store, so call ahead to see if they have it. Or if you go the store and they don’t have any copies left of these DC books, you could always buy an indie comic like 27 The Second Set, Baltimore: The Curse Bells, Pigs, and Moon Girl, which all come out this week, coincidentally. There’s more to comics than just superheroes from DC and Marvel, you know?

But that’s probably why you’re here, and now that I’ve gotten the indie comics alternative plug out of the way, let’s talk about the universe that I’d rather live in, the DC Universe! [...]

Comic Review: Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse: Epitaphs #3

Darkeva   |

Dollhouse: Epitaphs #3

Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse Epitaphs #3
Written by Andrew Chambliss, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen
Art by Phil Noto
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: September 14, 2011
Cover Price: $3.50

I’ve only ever watched the first season of the show Dollhouse produced by Joss Whedon and starring frequent collaborator (and overall kickass chick) Eliza Dushku, who starts as Echo, one of the “dolls” in a facility that programs applicants to take on a different identity for each assignment that they’re called to do. I thought the show had a decent concept, especially as some of the “dolls” became more suspicious of the facility and programmers, especially Echo. With that in mind, I thought the graphic novel might have an interesting storyline, especially since some graphic novel adaptations of television shows, like Dark Horse’s Buffy comics, offer some more intriguing takes on things the show couldn’t necessarily execute [...]

Interview: Brandon Jerwa Kickstarting ‘Untold Tales of The Comic Industry’

MK2Fac3   |

Brandon Jerwa

Recently, Kickstarter has seen many a project. The site has become nearly overcrowded with creative people putting out their truly unique ideas in varying levels of quality and originality. Some are more interesting that others, and when I came across Brandon Jerwa‘s project about shooting a documentary that focused on the creator’s side of the comic book industry, believe me, it caught my interest. It caught my interest so much so that we felt like we would be doing a disservice to him and his fellow creators as well as the Geeks of Doom readership if we didn’t try to shine some light on his truly amazing project.

Brandon Jerwa is a comic book writer with credits to his name like G.I. Joe, Xena/Army of Darkness, Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, and many more. He’s using his connections within the industry, and experience as a creator in the unique comic book business to bring to us an intriguing look into a side of the comic book world that we normally don’t see as fans.

Luckily, I had the chance to get in contact with Brandon and discuss some of the details about his upcoming Kickstarter project, when we can expect to see a final product, and who all is involved. The interview follows here below.

But, before we get to that, for your convenience, we’ve embed the trailer for the project below the interview. So, if you’re interested in the project and want to check out some more of the details not covered in the interview and possible throw out a donation, make sure to go here and here to do so [...]

Watch Now: Full Trailer For ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′

Empress Eve   |

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

A few days ago, you got to see a 15-second sneak peek for the The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 theatrical trailer. Changes are, if you’re a fan of the series, you were aching for more.

Well, ache no more! The full trailer is finally here and you can watch it in full right here below.

Also, Summit Entertainment released a new image from the film, which you can see at top (click for larger view). It’s another Bella and Edward honeymoon shot. Now, I saw the footage at San Diego Comic-Con of Bella getting into that bathrobe and I can tell you, she does A LOT of prepping to get ready for her sexy time with Edward (teeth brushing, hair combing, leg shaving – although I still don’t understand why she’s shaving her legs on her wedding night, wouldn’t she have done this in the morning before the wedding?) Watch Now: Audience Reaction To John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’

BAADASSSSS!   |

John Carpenter's Halloween (1978)

Bloody-Disgusting has posted a video that has been making the rounds online recently. The video plays a clip from the ending to the original 1978 version of John Carpenter‘s Halloween complete with authentic audience reaction that was recorded at the time of the film’s theatrical release. You can watch the video below this article.

The video is not a perfect match of image and sound because the timing of some of the audience sounds is obviously off, but it still remains a fascinating look at what it must have been like to be there when Carpenter’s groundbreaking horror classic first took the movie-going world by storm [...]

Check Out These Cenobites Designs From The On-Hold ‘Hellraiser’ Remake

BAADASSSSS!   |

The Hellraiser remake that has been gestating for years at Dimension Films has once again hit a roadblock. It was recently revealed that the powers that be at the studio have put the project on hold for the time being and that Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer, the director and writer (respectively) who had produced several different script drafts during their time working on the remake, were no longer on the project.

Gary J. Tunnicliffe, the prolific special effects makeup artist who had worked on nearly every Hellraiser sequel made since 1992′s Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth as well as many of Dimension’s direct-to-video genre offerings among others, was given the job of redesigning the series’ iconic monsters the Cenobites at his company Two Hours in the Dark. He also penned the script for the latest DTV Hellraiser sequel Revelations, which recently had a trailer released that drew strongly negative reactions from the horror fan community, and that’s putting it mildly. (You can read about that HERE .) It’s clear that Revelations was put together in a hurry so that Dimension wouldn’t lose the Hellraiser rights before they could get the sequel into theaters [...]

Comic Review: Jennifer Blood #4

Jennifer Blood #4
Written by Garth Ennis
Art by Marcos Marz, Kewber Baal
Letters by Rob Steen
Colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr.
Covers by (A) Tim Bradstreet, (B) Jonathan Lau, (C) Ale Garza, (D) Johnny Desjardins
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: September 7, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99

Writer Garth Ennis has a history of creating characters who like to get violent from time to time, and his new series, Jennifer Blood features just such a character. Jennifer Blood is a housewife by day and a killer by night, hunting down mobsters and other criminals and dispatching them with brutal efficiency. The series has got all of Ennis’ trademark outlandish characters and some of the old ultra-violence. From what I’ve read, it seems like a fun series with tons of action.

In previous issues of the series, Jennifer Blood has made a name for herself and has attracted the wrong kind of attention. Now someone has hired a team of killers to take Jennifer out. The killers are a team of young girls who act like every anime schoolgirl ninja stereotype, complete with broken English and inappropriate laughing. Jennifer has a plan though and isn’t going to let herself be taken out by a bunch of clichés [...]

‘Batman: Arkham City’ Soundtrack Details Surface

MK2Fac3   |

Arkham City Soundtrack

Last week Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, WaterTower Music, and DC Entertainment announced the soundtrack for Batman: Arkham City, the highly anticipated follow up to the immensely popular 2009 Batman: Arkham Asylum video game, will be released on October 4, just two weeks before the North American release of the game.

Soundtracks to video games have never really been that common with the exception of a handful of huge franchises, so this was a bit of a surprise for me when I saw the news. And what surprised me even more was the soundtrack description and track listing. In keeping with tradition of Batman soundtracks (1989-1997), the soundtrack to Batman: Arkham City boasts brand new music for a wide variety of artists whose work is either inspired by the game or Batman in general. Music about Batman from established artists? That’s the best possible scenario that can be imagined. But for me, it gets better [...]

Comic Review: Ashcan #1 & #2

Chibi Comics: Ashcan #1

Ashcan #1 & #2
Written by Mike Murphy
Art by Celina Hernandez, Sergio Calvet, Mike Murphy, Ray Johnson
Chibi Comics
Release Date: April, August 2011
Cover Price: $2.00
Digital Price: $.50

A quarterly anthology of four stories, Ashcan gives the reader a wide variety of stories that are bound to please almost everyone. Since I’m reviewing two comics at once, I will just break this up into four parts and speak to each story separately since they have no correlation with one another.

Newborn has a bit of a minimalist approach to the art, it’s very basic but it helps to keep the reader focused on the story which is, at this point, a little unclear. The first issue contains a scene from a bedroom involving two people talking in bed. The second shows us more of a femme fatale angle and I’m guessing the December issue will tie these together for us [...]

One of my favorite time periods in the Star Wars universe is the Old Republic. The original game for Xbox is one of my all time favorites. It is with this background that I dove into Star Wars: The Old Republic #4.

This issue follows two Jedi spies who are on an Imperial ship. Here we learn what is making it possible for the Empire to build their power weapons and ships so quickly, the Sun Razer. The Sun Razer harvests the energy of the Sun and allows the Empire to use the energy. One of the Jedi ends up having worked on the slave planet that built the prototype, and he is dealing with the guilt of not stopping the Sun Razer from being built [...]

Music Review: Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare

Obi-Dan   |

Alice Cooper
Welcome 2 My Nightmare
Universal Music Enterprises
Released September 12, 2011 UK: CD | MP3
September 13, 2011 U.S.: CD | MP3

After the disbandment of the Alice Cooper band, its frontman went solo and in 1975 released his first album: Welcome To My Nightmare. 36 years later Alice Cooper has released its follow-up, Welcome 2 My Nightmare. And you thought Chinese Democracy took a long time to make.

Ok, ok, so it’s not the same thing. Alice has released 17 albums in between (not including the many live albums and countless best of’s) and been constantly busy. His albums have ranged from the brilliant (Hey Stoopid) to boring (Dragontown). Those who were disappointed with 2008’s Along Came A Spider will be delighted with this return to gruesome form.

As with most of Alice’s past albums, much of this is playful in a twisted way. The one-two of the beautiful “Something To Remember Me By” followed by a tale of grizzly revenge in “When Hell Comes Home” is sure to raise an evil smile [...]

‘Back To The Future’ Sneaker Designer Tinker Hatfield Promises Self-Lacing MAG By 2015

The Movie God   |

Back to the Future II Nike MAG

Pure excitement quickly turned to sheer disappointment recently when it was announced that Nike was going to release the MAG, the actual self–tying sneaker that Michael J. Fox‘s Marty McFly character wore in Back to the Future II, BUT that they would only be releasing a limited 1,500 pairs of the shoe via auction (which, on the first day, were running many thousands of dollars per pair) and they would, sadly, not be self–lacing.

But that does not appear to be the end of it. Legendary shoe engineer Tinker Hatfield, the man who designed this brand new Nike MAG and invented the original Pump sneakers, was on hand at the release party for the MAG and had some encouraging words for those saddened by the lack of self–lacing.

Hatfield insisted that this is only the first line of MAG sneakers, and by the year 2015—the year Marty McFly actually wore the sneakers in Back to the Future II—they will indeed have the self–lacing technology. [...]

‘Point Break’ Remake Fast-Tracked; Will Be Set In The World Of Extreme Sports

The Movie God   |

Point Break

On the week of the original’s 20th anniversary, Alcon Entertainment co–founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove acquired the rights to remake the hit 1991 action flick, Point Break. Now the duo have officially announced their plans to fast–track a remake of the property for release by Warner Brothers.

Not a whole lot is known about the planned remake, but it is said that it will once again revolve around an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, and that it will be set in the world of international extreme sports. The original, which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, involved surfing, which is generally considered an extreme sport. In this case, however, it’s unclear which sport(s) will be used.

The remake is set to be written by Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the screenplays for Street Kings, Law Abiding Citizen, Salt, and the Total Recall remake. He also wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. [...]
