Culturesmash   |

Marvel Comics: Avengers #18 Preview

After the events of Fear Itself the Avengers are decimated and Captain America is left to rebuild the team once again (yes it has been that long since Avengers Disassembled). Next month in Avengers #18 Cap begins to do just that and it all will come to life on the page and iPad screen thanks to a new artist: Daniel Acuña. Acuña and writer Brian Michael Bendis have worked together in the past, but this series will be their biggest team up yet [...]

Empress Eve   |

UARS

So, by the way, apparently a school bus-sized now-dead satellite that’s been orbiting the Earth for 20 years is about to fall from the sky this weekend and plummet into the United States.

According to NASA, the 6 1/2-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite should have fallen to Earth this afternoon, but it’s traveling slower than originally thought. Therefore, those of us here in the United States can expect to be hit with debris some time tomorrow [...]

Movie Review: Warrior

Three-D   |

Warrior movie poster

Warrior
Directed by Gavin O’Conner
Starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison, Frank Campana, Kevin Dunn and Kurt Angle
Release Date: September 9, 2011

Warrior is a convincing look at a father and his two sons drowning in innumerable personal grief and universal issues, which result in each of them finding out who they truly are and were. Here is a film about the exploration of our true selves disguised as a mixed martial arts (MMA) movie. It is a visceral and blunt exploration into the anatomy of the alpha male. The subjects are the Conlons, from a working-class Pennsylvania town, who attempt to attain through any means necessary an anchor in which they can cling to when the emergence of reality becomes so widespread and ruthless. The Conlons, Paddy (Nick Nolte) along with his two estranged sons Brendan and Tommy (Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy), decided to dismiss reality and walk away from it, never imagining it would come back and eventually start a war between father and sons and brother against brother [...]

Comic Review: Vampirella #9

Vampirella #9

Covers by Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic, Paul Renaud, Fabiano Neves, Ale Garza
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: August 31, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99

First off, let me be honest. I’m not a consistent reader of this character, but I used to be. I was happy to be able to read and review Vampirella #9 since it used to be one of my favorite comics. Over the years, Vampirella has had major upheavals to her origin story, so much so that it got a bit confusing at times. Eric Trautmann has been very mysterious about his version until this book. I got a few glimpses but no detailed information which, truthfully, is intriguing. Fabiano Neves brings a starker image of Vampirella than many artists have in the past…quite a few have given her a more bimbo-like appearance, but I was happy to see her dressed to kick ass, not for a lingerie shoot [...]

NASA’s Kepler Spacecraft Discovers Real-Life ‘Star Wars’ Planet Tatooine

The Movie God   |

Star Wars Tatooine

Over three decades ago, George Lucas gave Star Wars to the world, and in that movie there was a planet called Tatooine that had two suns, which of course was just absurd and ridiculous science fiction at the time.

Now, just in time for the release of the movies on Blu–ray, NASA’s Kepler spacecraft has discovered the first real–life circumbinary planet, which means it orbits two stars.

You can read more below, as well as check out a video about the discovery.

The planet, being called Kepler–16b, was found 200 light–years from Earth in the Kepler–16 system. And though it does have two suns, that’s about where the similarities to Tatooine end. The planet is cold and gaseous and about the size of Saturn, with its stars about 60% and 20% the size of our own sun, respectively. The planet orbits its two suns every 229 days, and it’s not thought that any life would be found there…though it’s not completely out of the question—because the two suns are cooler than our own sun, water could possibly exist. Hobbit Fight! Elijah Wood Challenges ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Co-Star Dominic Monaghan To Fantastic Fest Battle

The Movie God   |

Elijah Wood

Every year at Fantastic Fest, they hold an event called Fantastic Debate where celebrities, filmmakers, and film critics engage in a head–to–head battle. First, they have themselves a podium debate over a specific topic, and then they move to the boxing ring, where words are not necessary.

This year brings with it an interesting little match–up. Elijah Wood, star of everything from the new FX hit series, Wilfred, to films like Lord of the Rings, Sin City and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, threw down a challenge to LOST star and his LOTR co–star, Dominic Monaghan.

Continue reading for more and to check out videos of Wood’s challenge and Monaghan’s response.

It began with Wood recording a very professional wrestling–worthy video, challenging Monaghan to the bout. Wood definitely brings it with the trash talking (possibly assisted by beneficial qualities of some liquid courage). Monaghan’s response proves that he’s getting in shape…kinda…but he might not be quite as confident. [...]

‘Monster’ Director Patty Jenkins Might Helm ‘Thor 2′

BAADASSSSS!   |

The God of Thunder doesn’t look too happy. Well ever since Thor director Kenneth Branagh decided against taking the helm of a sequel to the Mighty Marvel movie hit that has rang up worldwide ticket sales of $449 million, Marvel Studios has been searching for a new director to guide Thor and his awesome hammer Mjolnir through another dazzling cinematic adventure destined to be post-converted to 3D. Although directors such as James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), Breck Eisner (The Crazies), Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones), and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) have been mentioned in connection with the assignment, the latest word has Patty Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron to a Best Actress Oscar in the 2003 drama Monster, possibly wielding the mighty megaphone and getting a snazzy parking spot at Disney Studios as the new director of Thor 2 [...]

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The first full trailer for the upcoming David Fincher-directed remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been released today. You can watch the trailer below this article.

Running nearly four minutes, the new trailer mixes the extravagant visuals (a Fincher specialty) we first glimpsed in the teaser trailer that was “leaked” several months ago with a stronger emphasis on the film’s story and the character of Lisbeth Salander, played in the remake by Rooney Mara (The Social Network). The central mystery of the story is laid out nicely without spoiling any important information [...]

‘RoboCop’ Remake Director Discusses His Vision For The Film

BAADASSSSS!   |

Ever since MGM announced several years back that they were putting a remake of the 1987 sci-fi action classic RoboCop into production not much progress has been made, which fans of the original film would see as a blessing. For a time Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) was attached to direct the remake, but he moved on to other things. Most recently Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) was handed the reins of the RoboCop redux, and the director gave an interview to Comic Book Movie about his plans for the remake and what he hopes to accomplish by taking on a beloved genre film [...]

Watch Now: ‘Digital Decay’ Featurette From ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 1 Special Edition Blu-ray

BAADASSSSS!   |

Timed to the upcoming second season premiere of The Walking Dead Anchor Bay Entertainment is releasing a special edition DVD set of the show’s problematic but ultimately stellar first season on Blu-ray and DVD with even more extra features than their previous release of the first season. Today the company has released a clip from one of the newly created bonus featurettes and you can watch the video below this article.

Titled “Digital Decay,” the 90-second clip takes brief look at the CGI effects created for the series, notably the additional zombies. There’s nothing revelatory in this video but it does give you a feel for the ways that digital effects are used to create a worthwhile end result.

Among the new features to be found on the Season 1 Special Edition are audio commentaries with various principal members of the cast and crew, behind-the-scenes featurettes, extra footage, and a special version of the pilot episode presented in black and white. [...]

Guillermo Del Toro Offers Brief Update On ‘Incredible Hulk’ TV Series

The Movie God   |

Guillermo del Toro Hulk

We haven’t heard a whole lot about the new TV series based on The Incredible Hulk currently being developed by Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro and Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick. And, unfortunately, we’ll have to continue waiting for something juicy.

But Mr. del Toro did take the time out of working on his next film, Pacific Rim, to drop a little update on Del Toro Films, the writer, director, and producer’s official fansite.

You can check out what he had to say below.

Del Toro touched on who’s inspired him in the development of the show, as well as why he’s drawn to superheroes with monster–like qualities to them.

We’ve been coming up with an angle that is really strong. I am a fan of Peter David, Pak and Loeb but I like very much what individual writers and artists have done through the decades. [...]

RELEASE DATE: August 9, 2011

Having the very unfortunate disposition of costing $150 million to make, and only bringing back $38 million worldwide in return, Walt Disney’s Mars Needs Moms can be considered one of the biggest flops of all time…and that, my friends, is not a good thing to have hovering over you. But is the movie really as bad as this monumental flop indicates, or are there redeeming qualities worth seeking out?

The movie follows Milo, (performance captured by Seth Green, voiced by Seth Robert Dusky), a normal everyday boy who has a bit of an argument with his mother (Joan Cusack). As most boys would, he feels badly about snapping at her with some very unkind words, and proceeds to go and apologize. But when he reaches her bedroom, a strange bright light is making its way through the bottom of the door, and he goes in to check out what it is. [...]
