Often both Marvel and DC can do too many spin-offs from their most popular titles. You’d think DC Comics is all about Batman or Superman and Marvel Comics is all about Wolverine or Spider-Man. Sometimes these spin-off series can offer up some entertaining stories though. In mid October, Marvel will be releasing Avengers Solo #1 featuring Hawkeye. Yes it’s another Avengers book. That’s exactly what I thought too. But this story is already intriguing.

Back in August, YouTube user FinalCutKing released a video called Jedi Kittens, a very short clip of two wonderfully adorable kittens having themselves a lightsaber fight.

That video was only a brief 16 seconds long, but the kitties have returned in a much longer sequel titled Jedi Kittens Strike Back, which sees them having a good ol’ Star Wars dogfight before both of their ships go down and the ‘sabers come out yet again!

A movie adaptation of the mega–hit BioWare video game franchise, Mass Effect, is still in the very early stages of development, but already basic details are being shared that are pretty interesting and potentially unsettling.

Last we had heard, the project would be making an appearance at this past San Diego Comic–Con with BioWare’s Casey Hudson and screenwriter Mark Protosevich, but because it was so early, not much was shared. Not that it appeared, anyway. As it turns out, Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the planned movie, actually answered a few questions that fans were asking via the Twitter on their website. And a couple of their answers could have fans unsure of what’s to come.

In a remake/reboot/sequel/prequel–happy Hollywoodland, nothing should come as shock or surprise anymore. That said, it still doesn’t mean people will be thrilled to hear about one of these popular types of movie, especially when it involves a classic…or in this case, two of them.

It’s being reported that Universal Pictures is developing a new updated take on Scarface, which has had two previous versions of the story made: the 1932 classic starring Paul Muni and directed by Howard Hawks, and the 1983 hit starring Al Pacino and directed by Brian De Palma.

The studio isn’t calling the project a “remake” because, well, everybody hates remakes and it would be considered blasphemous, which would be bad for business. That would be my own take on the reasoning, anyway. Universal plans to take the common elements of both movies—”an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition”—and put their own spin on it, but that still sounds like a “remake” to me. The franchise may be over, but with the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 DVD and Blu-ray set to hit relatively soon, fans of Harry Potter will have one more day in the spotlight. Especially for those who found themselves enthralled when two of the franchise’s characters finally hooked up.

As the cliche goes, not many geeks will be found out there running marathons and taking part in other highly athletic events. But for those of you geeks who do like to compete, there’s a new race that’s just for you.

An company called Reed Street Productions has created Run For Your Lives, a new 5K race that mixes running, obstacles, and of course, flesh–eating zombies. It looks like it could be the same folks that created the feared Spartan Race, but it’s unclear if they really did or not.

Now, while films like Shame and A Dangerous Method really tore up the fall festival circuit this year, one genre picture played as one of the biggest surprises this year. And now, it’s about to get remade.

THR is reporting that Screen Gems will remake the Toronto International Film Festival 2011 Midnight Madness award winner, The Raid. The film follows the story of a SWAT team that tries to make its way through a building ran by a mobster and a collection of dealers, thugs, and even the occasional martial arts master.

Sony has the North American rights to the original Indonesian feature, which is looking to hit the states here soon, particularly after playing like gangbusters on the festival circuit. I haven’t seen the film, but haven’t heard anything but insanely positive buzz for the film, so a remake shouldn’t be shocking. [...]

As his elder sibling, Chris, is becoming something of an action star, up-and-comer Liam Hemsworth has found himself quite a project. Variety is reporting that the star of The Hunger Games has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel, The Expendables 2.

Simon West is helming the film, which will find the youngster alongside Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture, as well as Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and even Arnold Schwarzenegger, who were all recently confirmed by Stallone. That’s one hell of a list.

Scott Adkins, martial artist, has also joined the cast, but it’s Hemsworth that no doubt is getting the headlines, as this is just another instance of the actor slowly growing within his brother’s shadow. I haven’t been a huge fan of his work, but it does look as though he’s caught someone’s attention, as this is quite a project to be a part of. [...]

Well the day every R.E.M. fan (including yours truly) has dreaded has unfortunately arrived: singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills have mutually agreed to dissolve their famed rock band after playing together for 31 years.

Warner Home Video, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros Animation announced details on their upcoming DC Animation panel at next month’s New York Comic-Con, as well as releasing the first image from the Catwoman short feature on the Batman: Year One DVD and Blu-ray releasing on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

First, this animation panel at NYCC looks amazing. The panel will be an hour long on Friday, October 14, and will take place from 3-4pm. Scheduled to appear on the panel are legendary casting director Andrea Romano, DCU executive producer Bruce Timm, and the voice of Batman himself Kevin Conroy. The announcement hints at more possible guests for the panel, as well. And if one person could be suspected of showing up, it would be Eliza Dushku, the voice of Catwoman in both the 15-minute animated feature that this panel will be debuting and Batman: Year One, but that’s purely speculation on my part. In addition, the panel guests will be available for autograph signings directly after the panel [...]

I’ve read plenty of Hellboy stories before, but no actual B.P.R.D. comics before, so I was excited to dive into the B.P.R.D. part of the Hellboy universe, which is exactly what I have done with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: Russia #1 (of 5). I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to follow the story or would get lost within it. The main reason I haven’t read any B.P.R.D. before is that even though I knew where to start, I was intimidated by the amount of stories that are out there. As it turns out, I didn’t have worry.

The most impressive thing about this issue was the accessibility of it. I was aware of a lot of the cast, whether from the Hellboy comics I have read, or from the movies or from just hearing about the characters from other comics fans. The recap page did a great job of catching me up to speed, and the story just took off from there and explained anything else I needed to know [...]
