A handful of new images from the upcoming Marvel Studios juggernaut, The Avengers, have been released online by Walt Disney.

Some of the images are of the official variety, showing the likes of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Tom Hiddleston as Thor villain Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. There’s also a couple of unofficial images—one of which shows Johansson and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye filming a scene in front of a green screen, while the other shows stars Evans, Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and director Joss Whedon on the set.

Charles Napier, an iconic character actor who specialized in playing stern authority figures and various tough guy roles in an acting career in film and television that spanned more than four decades, passed away today at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, CA. He was 75.

Born in 1936 in Scottsville, Kentucky, Napier served in the U.S. Army in the 11th Airborne Division before becoming an actor in the late 1960′s. One of Napier’s first acting roles was playing a space hippie on the Star Trek original series episode “A Way to Eden.” He later became a favorite actor of director Russ Meyer and appeared in his films Cherry, Harry, and Racquel!, The Seven Minutes, Supervixens, and Meyer’s mind-blowing magnum opus Beyond the Valley of the Dolls [...]

We’ve heard talks about plans to try offering big Hollywood movies on demand not too long after they’re released in theaters for a while now, and it looks like those who support the idea are ready to test the waters.

According to the LA Times, Universal Pictures will offer up Brett Ratner‘s new movie, Tower Heist, three weeks after its November 4, 2011 theatrical release through Universal parent company Comcast’s on demand services. The movie will only be available to 500,000 customers in the Atlanta and Portland, Oregon areas to test the waters of this new option, and those of you who have this option will only have to throw down $59.99 to check the movie out.

Universal and Comcast will pay close attention to how well the movie does released this early and at this price, while firm eyes will also be focused on how offering a movie three weeks after theatrical release affects box office numbers. [...]

At the end of August, many were stunned when it was revealed that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was stepping down as CEO, and that Tim Cook would be taking his place. It wasn’t the first time that Jobs had stepped away, and many feared the worst given that he had battled numerous health problems, including pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant.

Now those fears have become a reality, as Apple has announced via a short statement on their website that Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56.

The statement read:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. [...]

American Horror Story, the new series from Glee creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, seems to be heading in a potentially interesting direction if the pilot episode is anything to go by. But I won’t be going along with them.

First off I’m not exactly the biggest fan of Murphy (whose other crimes against pop culture include creating Nip/Tuck and writing and directing Eat, Pray, Love) or any members of the American Horror Story cast, including Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton (although she was good on Spin City and Friday Night Lights), and Jessica Lange. It’s a mixed bag of overrated talent that grates my nerves whenever any of them are on screen and it doesn’t help the actors that the characters they play are unsympathetic and the material dull and pretentious. Fear Agent has always been a series that I think would appeal to a lot of Geeks of Doom readers who maybe don’t read comics. It doesn’t deal with any of the standard superhero tropes of other comics, instead focusing on sci-fi action with smart writing and excellent art. Fear Agent has been chugging along for a few years, and is coming to an end next issue (at least for a while), so it is amazing to see that Fear Agent #31, part four of the Out of Step mini-series, is the best issue of the series so far [...]

If you’re reading Geeks of Doom, which you should be because it’s great [*shameless plug*], you may have seen an article a couple of weeks back about a wedding cake sent to Doom HQ’s to promote an upcoming show on FX, titled American Horror Story, the first episode of which airs tonight.

Following the immensely successful re–release of The Lion King in 3D, The Walt Disney Company has announced plans for the re–release of four more classics, including two Pixar Animation films.

The Lion King, which was first released in 1994, has made around $100 million worldwide in its 3D re–release. When added to the $312.8 million it made domestically back in ’94, the over $450 million in foreign box office, and a few spurts of income here and there since then, the movie now sits at a grand total of around $883 million.

So, of course, it wouldn’t take a business–savvy supergenius to figure out that there’s a whole lot of money to be made here. Which brings us to what movies you can expect to see returning to theaters in the next couple of years: Disney has revealed that Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., and The Little Mermaid will all make their way back to the big screen in 3D. Wow. Apparently September/October has become the time for video game companies to release any game connected with a superhero franchise. Last week saw the release of X-Men: Destiny, Batman: Arkham City will be out in a couple of weeks, and this week sees the release of Spider-Man: Edge of Time. This new game from Activision/Beenox, the makers of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, allows players to play as the Amazing Spider-Man in the present day, as well as his 2099 counterpart in an adventure to stop the death of the web-slinger [...]

As I’ve stated previously, I am huge fan of the soundtracks from all the Batman films. That might have something to do with the fact that I’m a huge Batman fan, which most of you may know by now, but you may not know my love for music. So, when the two are combined, it’s a perfect storm for pure Hunter Camp enjoyment. I mean, Batman-related songs from artists like Prince, Method Man, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and The Offspring have been featured on various Batman soundtracks. That’s a great thing. So, when the announcement of the Batman: Arkham City soundtrack came out, to say that I was excited would be an understatement. It has literally been 14 years since the last high profile Batman soundtrack filled with popular music has come out. You may have noticed that Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies have only been accompanied by purchasable score audio, and the Arkham Asylum game came with no soundtrack [...]

A new video has been released on Mouth Taped Shut, a viral marketing Tumblr website for director David Fincher‘s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, that shows some amazing metal posters being made for the movie. Even better, the almost four–minute video offers up a sample of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘s score for the film.

Reznor and Ross are coming off of an Academy Award–winning collaboration on the score for Fincher’s last film, Best Picture nominee The Social Network. And as for where you can get one of these posters, that’s not yet known. But every movie fan is going to want one, that much is for sure.

On October 5, 2011, at 10/9pm Central, the new television series American Horror Story will debut on the FX network. It’s a horror genre show about a family that moves cross country to reside in what ends up being a house haunted by the spirits of some gruesomely slaughtered victims and, assumingly, murderers. If I wasn’t excited before, I definitely am now.

This show is right up my alley. I love the horror genre and I have my entire life, so when I saw the first full trailer when I was at a movie recently, I totally fell in love. And then this article got published. Our site runners Empress Eve and Dave3 received a bloody wedding cake from these people! How cool is that!? But there was more to this story, the folks behind American Horror Story set up a site where you can register to receive artifacts from the terrible massacre that went down in this twisted house of horrors. Let me start by saying I love everything Jim Butcher has written. This was no exception. Obviously, the story was slimmed down and adapted to comic form but the source material is still there. Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files: Fool Moon #4 is all about Harry Dresden and Tera West finding MacFinn after his transformation into a loup garou (a very nasty type of lycanthrope). Of course, with Harry, nothing is ever simple.

A bit of confusion leads Tera to attempt to attack Harry. He, however, doesn’t have time for it and decides to avoid the confrontation. Quickly realizing the police are looking for them, they decide to split up after finding MacFinn. Unfortunately, MacFinn gets caught…which leads Harry to calling his almost-girlfriend, Susan, for help. […]
