Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter Offered Roles In ‘Akira’

Cinemumra   |

Akira

Despite being one of the more maligned remakes currently in production, you have to admit, the cast for the long-discussed remake of the beloved anime flick Akira maybe just got a whole lot interesting.

Twitch is reporting that the pair of Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter have been offered the roles of Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively. The film will be helmed by Jaume Collet-Sera, and is currently being set up with Garret Hedlund in the film’s lead role (or at least, as of the writing of this, he’s in discussion for the role of Kaneda), so it does appear as though this is definitely on its way [...]

WB Hires Writer For ‘Sherlock Holmes 3′

Cinemumra   |

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows

Where there’s one sequel, there is likely to be even more. And while Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows hasn’t even hit theaters yet, WB is looking to move forward on a third film in the burgeoning franchise.

Deadline is reporting that WB has tapped Drew Pearce to pen a third film in the franchise, which is interesting, if only for the fact that Pearce is also the man behind the pen for the third film in the Iron Man franchise [...]

How To Make Your Own ‘Immortals’ Halloween Costume, Plus Win Stuff!

Athena

On November 11, 2011, Tarsem Singh’s Greek mythology epic, Immortals, hits theaters, but if you want to be an Immortal for Halloween, we have some DIY instructions for you to follow to make your own costume.

In the film, Isabel Lucas plays the beautiful goddess Athena — that’s her in the film in the photo above (and in the poster below). See here below for instructions on how to make your own Athena costume. And don’t worry if you’re not the greatest do-it-yourselfer — there’s a handy link to purchase a golden dress, so all you’ll have to do is create the accessories!

Those of you who do end up making this costume, tweet me at @eveofdoom with a pic of yourself in the costume (or it can be of just the costume itself) OR post a pic to the Geeks of Doom Facebook page and I’ll send you a prize [...]

‘The Dark Tower’ Still Looking To Move Forward After Budget Cut

Cinemumra   |

Apparently, there is a silver lining on the horizon for the long-discussed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.

The Playlist is reporting that despite being shut down by Universal, the team of producer Brian Grazer, writer Akiva Goldsman, and director Ron Howard is not only still attempting to get the project off the ground, but has gotten the film’s budget cut down $45 million, going as far to say that “it’s going to get made.” [...]

Book Review: ‘Nerd Do Well’ By Simon Pegg

cGt2099   |

Nerd Do Well

Nerd Do Well
A Small Boy’s Journey to Becoming a Big Kid
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle
By Simon Pegg
Gotham Books
Release date: June 09, 2011

Despite what you’ve been lead to believe, Nerd Do Well is not an autobiography. Except that it is, but it isn’t… It’s a crafty book disguise designed by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Star Trek) as memoirs, within which he has been able to insert the true book: The Adventure of Suave Superhero Simon Pegg and his Amazing Robot Butler.

Yes, you read that accurately.

Stuffed very cleverly in between different chapters reviewing Pegg’s life is this crafty, and hysterical, tale of him as a secret agent superhero, with an automaton sidekick that he would have you believe bears absolutely no resemblance to any robot sidekick ever used. Get that vision of C-3PO out of your head right now, because Canterbury (the robot) is, at Pegg’s insistence, nothing like the Star Wars droid [...]

NYCC 2011: Cosplay Photo Parade – Sunday Edition

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Geeks of Doom vs. New York Comic Con 2011

The Photo Parade for last weekend’s New York Comic-Con continues with the Sunday edition.

For any other convention, Sunday would be the slowest of all the convention days, but not at this Con, where the final day is Kid’s Day. And at this time, it’s just as busy as any other day and these pics prove it.

As usual, if you see yourself in any of these photos, give a shout out! [...]

NYCC 2011 Video Interview: ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Star Ashley Eckstein

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Geeks of Doom vs. New York Comic Con 2011

During last weekend’s New York Comic-Con, Geeks of Doom got a chance to chat with Ashley Eckstein, star of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series and founder of Her-universe, a line of merchandise geared towards female sci-fan fans.

Eckstein took some time out of her busy schedule to give us some one-on-one screen time to discuss the creation of Her-Universe and the future of the company, which includes a deal with Disney Parks, as well as how she fared on a certain old school game show. She also dished on what’s happening in Season 4 of Clone Wars and what’s going on with her character.

Comic Review: Monocyte #1

The Geeks of Doom   |

Review by Matthew Manarino

IDW Publishing: Monocyte #1

Monocyte #1
Created and written by Menton3, Kasra Ghanbari
Art by Menton3
IDW Publishing
Release Date: October 19, 2011
Cover Price: $3.99

Let me start off by saying Monocyte is dark, I mean really dark. With the exception of some spilled blood here and there the entire comic is done monochromatically. Characters’ bodies are either detailed masses of flesh and bone painstakingly drafted in black and grays, or they are huge black masses with unidentifiable torsos. Of course there will be H.R. Giger comparisons to artist Menton3‘s style and scope, and in this lies my issue with Monocyte. Each panel is so beautifully drawn and inked that they deserve to be single-standing illustrations, the words within each panel seemed like an afterthought. This was enhanced more by the fact that with art so meticulously rendered, the story seemed rushed and unevenly paced at many points in this issue [...]

NYCC 2011 Video Interview: ‘Angel and Faith’ Duo Christos Gage & Rebekah Isaacs

Jack Bauerstein83   |

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 3

WordSlinger   |

Paranormal Activity 3 movie poster

Paranormal Activity 3
Directed by Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman

Written by Christopher B. Landon, Oren Peli
Starring Lauren Bittner, Chloe Csengery, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Jessica Tyler Brown, Dustin Ingram, Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden
Release Date: October 21, 2011

It was not surprising that Paranormal Activity was turned into a franchise after the original, which was made on a budget of $15,000, made over $100 million at the box office. What is surprising is that Paranormal Activity 3, despite rehashing the same formula as the first two films, still manages to scare people half to death.

The evil is back. The incorporeal evil has been caught on tape again, and this time it has a name… Toby. That’s right, the malevolent entity haunting the family in the Paranormal Activity series is named Toby. At least, that is, according to Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown), who gives the name to what her sister Katie (Chloe Csengery) thinks is her imaginary friend. Katie and Kristie both learn the hard way that Toby is not imaginary in the first two films, but Paranormal Activity 3 is set in 1988, when the girls are still children living with their mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) and stepdad Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith) [...]

Frank Oz Reveals Why He Turned Down ‘The Muppets’

BAADASSSSS!   |

The Muppets

When The Muppets hits theaters the day before Thanksgiving the movie will be missing one of the original “Muppeteers”: Frank Oz.

Before becoming a director with films as diverse as the 1986 musical remake of Little Shop of Horrors and the DeNiro/Brando/Norton crime drama The Score to his credit, Oz provided the voices and movements for several of the most iconic Muppet characters including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Animal as well as Grover and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street. He also did the voice and puppeteering for Yoda in the original Star Wars trilogy (for the prequels Oz only did the voice, as Yoda was now a CGI character) [...]
