HBO Cancels ‘Hung,’ ‘Bored To Death,’ ‘How To Make It In America’; Renews ‘Enlightened’

If you’re a fan of the HBO comedies Hung, Bored to Death, or How To Make It In America, then you’re about to have a very bad day as HBO has decided to cancel all three of them. If you’re a fan of the new show Enlightened, on the other hand, you can rejoice as a second season has been ordered.

It’s unclear exactly why it was decided to cancel the three shows—Hung was the highest rated of all four of them and star Thomas Jane just scored another Golden Globe nomination, while Enlightened was struggling a bit in the ratings department but did land itself two Globe nominations, which likely helped a great deal.

Another deciding factor has to be HBO’s upcoming lineup of new comedies. Upcoming titles include Judd Apatow’s Girls, Ricky Gervais’s Life’s Too Short, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Veep, and Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys, with two others also in the works.

What are your thoughts on the decision to cancel these shows?

  • I was loving ‘How to Make it in America’.. but it seems to target a pretty slim scope of an audience.. it reminds me of Entourage.. but with less success made by the main characters.. more realistic but less fun.

And with a lineup like that coming up.. i don’t blame them for ditching these shows. . . I’m a Showtime guy anyways, those guys gotta compete with Dexter and Weeds, two shows that can’t conceivably go on for too many more seasons.. as much as i love them.. so popping out a few new shows with big names behind them seems like a good strategy to shift the tides back towards HBO.
