Rumor Alert: Harrison Ford In Talks For New ‘Blade Runner’ Film

Empress Eve   |

Back in March 2011, Alcon Entertainment announced that they had obtained the rights to make both prequels and sequels to the 1982 Ridley Scott science fiction classic film, Blade Runner. In August 2011, the news broke that Scott had signed on to return to helm the next film, which Alcon stated they wanted to be completely original from the first Blade Runner movie.

Now, Twitch Film is reporting that actor Harrison Ford, who starred in the original Blade Runner, is in early talks to be in the new film.

The outlet is stating that talks are still in the very early stages and it is quite possible that things won’t work out. Basically, take this tidbit with a grain of salt, as even Twitch points out that producer Andrew Kosove told the LA Times last August that Ford would not be involved with the new project.

In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott but if you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.

Since the announcement of a new Blade Runner film, people have been wondering whether it would be a prequel, sequel, or reboot, but if Ford really does sign on for the new movie as his original character Rick Deckard, then it’d appear that we’re looking at a sequel. Although – look what J.J. Abrams did with his 2009 Star Trek reboot/prequel when he managed to get Leonard Nimoy into the film as his original character (but let’s hope that this isn’t what’s happening with Blade Runner). Also, just because Ford would be in the new movie, doesn’t mean he’d be playing the same character. Or, the role could just be a cameo.

Would Harrison Ford’s involvement in a new Blade Runner film make you more likely to go see it?

I’ll see the new movie in any event, but Harrison Ford’s presence would definitely add a lot of interest for me. For instance, it would automatically answer the question, was he a replicant in the original? No, he couldn’t be.

I think having Ford playing a replicant that a new Blade Runner had to hunt down would add an interesting layer of depth to the new film. I doubt this will pan out as there was alot of animosity between Ford and Ridley Scott but anything’s possible.
