DC Comics announced today that they will be going back to Smallville to bring fans of the show an eleventh season in digital comic book form this April.

Smallville: Season 11 will be a weekly digital comic penned by show writer, comic scribe, and personal favorite Bryan Q. Miller that goes deeper into Clark Kent’s first year as Superman while still using the mythos set up in the televised series. All of the characters that fans of the show know and love will still be major players in the series including Lois Lane, Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), Chloe Sullivan-Queen, General Lane, and many more.

Miller also stated in the release that we’ll even be seeing some brand new faces, as well. By using logic, one can assume that characters mentioned, but never shown in the TV series, will be featured. Also, I fully expect this comic to incorporate several aspects of the DC universe into the Smallville universe much like the show was doing in its later seasons. Joining Miller on art is his Batgirl cohort Pere Perez, who will be basing his art style on the looks and styles of the actors and actresses who portrayed the characters on the show, so fans will feel comfortable with the change in format.

Accompanying Miller and Perez on covers are two of the most talent artists working in comics: Cat Staggs (art pictured here below) will be doing to covers for the digital versions of the comic, while fan favorite Gary Frank will be doing art for the print edition. “What’s that, you say? A print edition? I thought you said this was a digital comic?!” It is, but the comic will also be getting collected in a printed format alongside an episode guide, which will be available on May 16, 2012.

The creative team of Miller/Perez is one of my favorites coming out of their incredible Batgirl run, so personally I’m ecstatic to see them joining forces to breathe new life into the incredibly popular Smallville series.

Smallville: Season 11 will be available on a weekly digital format starting on April 13, 2012.
