‘The Avengers’ Director Joss Whedon Still Has Hope For More ‘Firefly’

Firefly

It’s sad and quite depressing to think that it’s already been almost ten years since Firefly came and went before anyone really knew what it was or how cherished it would become.

For those of you who still hold on to hope that FOX will finally give it that second chance we see being given more and more often these days (it’s shocking that they haven’t already knowing the fanbase Firefly now has in comparison to one of their new and untested shows with no fanbase), or that they’ll allow someone else to give it another chance (Netflix has become a popular option), know that you’re not alone.

The show’s creator and the man directing this summer’s juggernaut comic book movie The Avengers, geek god Joss Whedon, spoke recently about his enduring faith that one day Serenity will fly again.

Speaking at SXSW recently, Whedon said of the hopes of a Firefly return:

“I keep thinking they’re going to call me, crunch the numbers and say ‘Hey, we can make money from this!’ — but they don’t.

I would never rule it out, I love those people. But I can’t just wait by the phone.”

Whedon spoke about a lot of things overall, which you can read about by heading over to Indiewire.

No one involved with Firefly is “waiting by the phone” anymore—almost all of them have gone on to do bigger things—but you know if that phone does ever ring, most of them will come sprinting.

It may also help a lot that Whedon is behind the biggest superhero movie ever made in The Avengers. If the movie is as awesome and does as well as everyone expects it to do, it could spark some pondering in FOX. It could also fill Whedon’s schedule with other large movies, which wouldn’t help so much, but he did also mention in the above chat that he prefers the TV medium over movies.

And for those who think this decade hiatus from making the show is way too long, I must kindly disagree. In fact, it might be the perfect amount of time to pass (even though it was against their will). Firefly may have only had one season, but it was a brilliant season, topped off nicely by the movie Serenity. Sure there’s still story we wanted to be told and questions we wanted answered, but picking up ten years later (instead of right where we left off) feels like it could actually make more sense. They’d need only gather up any and all of the previous cast who’s willing and able to come back, find a new pilot (my vote remains for Patton Oswalt), figure out exactly where to pick up the story and what the characters have been up to, and fill in all of that time we missed via flashbacks moving forward. Easy pie!

Are you listening yet, Netflix? We’re going to keep nagging, you know.

  1. I suspect that if it does come back that they might not need a new Pilot (and let us not forget that he wasn’t the only one lost), because alot of fans have stated outright that they count Serenity as an “alternative timeline” and not legitimate. My brother for example does as there’s some stuff in the movie that completely contradicts information given multiple times in the series. Even, if I recall right, Joss Whedon doesn’t consider it legit. So chances are they would not factor in Serenity events if they did bring it back.

  2. I’d be really surprised if Whedon didn’t consider it legit, given that he made the thing…

  3. Actually it’s not that hard to believe. I mean he was deeply disappointed in the final product of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, and he was the one who wrote it. It’s why he looks at the start of the series as the start of his career. I mean for Serenity he had a huge script and had to butcher most of it to fit the budget they would give him which wasn’t even the standard they give most. I’ll try to find the commentary to back up what I said when I’m feeling less under the weather, but it’s not hard to believe he might not consider it so just cause he made it.

  5. Back up. I believe Whedon has said he felt Serenity was a fitting way to wrap up the character arc. Meaning he liked the film. He just mentioned that, if he had it to do over again, he probably would not have killed Wash… and if a sequel or series continuation were to ever materialize, he’d most likely ignore that the whole skewering thing ever happened (or he’d place the action of a new series in between the timeline of the last episode of the original series and that of Serenity).
But as far as the film itself, he was not disappointed.
