You may be asking, “Who the hell is The Reverend Horton Heat?” Well, he’s not an actual reverend, for starters. He’s Jim Heath, who acquired the nickname “Reverend” back in 1985 when his impromptu solo rendition of “Fulsom Prison Blues” was met with shouts of “Go Reverend” by the proprietor of the venue where Heath was simply known as “Jim the Sound Guy,” It was that night that Jim Heath became The Reverend Horton Heat. The name Horton is a nod to Johnny Horton, an American country and rockabilly singer popular in the 1950s, and Heat is just a shortened version of Heath. The name also doubles as the name of the band, whose sound has been described as a combination of country, surf, punk, big band, swing, and rockabilly – sometimes collectively referred to as psychobilly. Their energetic sound and often humorous lyrics, make The Reverend Horton Heat an all-around good-time band.
