Just a few days we got our first look at the poster for Looper, the forthcoming sci-fi thriller from Brick writer-director Rian Johnson. Today we have a brief tease of the film’s first trailer courtesy of Apple, featuring a snippet of footage from the film and comments from Johnson and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
You can watch it here below.
Looper is set in a world where time travel exists, but only as black market technology used by the mob to eliminate their enemies. They send hired killers, called “loopers,” thirty years into the past with their quarry. Gordon-Levitt plays a looper whose life is threatened when his employers decide to target his future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination.
The quick swatch of footage we get in this tease is certainly enticing enough to get me to watch the full trailer, which premieres online this Thursday, April 12. Two things confound me about this tease though: 1) Is anyone else getting sick of this annoying new trend in film promotion where trailers are getting their own trailers now? Total Recall is equally guilty, but Prometheus took the concept and ground it into dust. 2) Gordon-Levitt’s make-up in this footage kinda gives me the heebie jeebies. I know Johnson wanted his young star to closely resemble Willis as much as possible but the effect looked much subtler in the first photos of Gordon-Levitt in character than it does here. That eyeliner looks frightening up close.
Looper also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Piper Perabo, Garret Dillahunt, and Jeff Daniels. The movie opens on September 28, 2012.
