Roberto Orci Reveals ‘Ender’s Game’ Release Date

BAADASSSSS!   |

Ender's Game

Orson Scott Card‘s classic 1985 sci-fi adventure novel Ender’s Game has been targeted for the celluloid treatment for several years, at one point with Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) in the director’s chair. Last year, Summit Entertainment finally got an Ender’s movie into production with Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) directing and writing the screenplay adaptation.

The project has attracted a cast of acting heavyweights and up-and-coming young stars with 15-year-old British actor Asa Butterfield (Hugo) in the title role of a brilliant child who joins a program designed to produce military officers out of bright children for a war Earth is waging with an alien known as the Formics, or “buggers.” Joining Butterfield are Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Ben Kingsley (Sexy Beast), recent Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help), and Harrison Ford – no stranger to fighting in interstellar wars on screen.

The film is currently in production in New Orleans and today producer Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Fringe) via his Twitter feed revealed that the film’s release date would be November 1, 2013.

Summit was recently purchased by Lionsgate Entertainment and Ender’s Game will be the first of two major Lionsgate movies opening that month – the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire is scheduled to debut on November 22, 2013.

With Prometheus and Looper opening this year and Ender’s coming late next year, challenging science fiction films are coming back to the cinemas in a huge way. It’s good to see Gavin Hood land such a high-profile project after the poorly-received (but hugely profitable) X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t really do much for his directing career, and he’s assembled quite the talented cast. It’ll be interesting to see what Hood and his cast and crew do with Card’s revered and controversial novel, which has made the U.S. Marine Corps’ recommended reading list and spawned four sequels in print. The future is uncertain, but the Ender’s Game movie is off to a smashing start.
