Asia 30th Anniversary Tour

The original members of the rock band Asia will be celebrating their 30th anniversary with a new album (on CD+DVD and CD), DVD, and a world tour, as well as a reissue of their debut album.

The original line-up — Geoff Downes (keyboards), Steve Howe (guitar), Carl Palmer (drums), and John Wetton (bass, lead vocals), will release a new studio album called XXX on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 in the U.S (June 29 in the UK), and will embark on their 30th Anniversary World Tour later this year.

Along with the new album, Asia will also release Resonance, a DVD concert film from the group’s 2010/2011 Omega World Tour, as well as a collectors’ edition of their eponymous 1982 debut album, which contains their hit song “Heat Of The Moment,” which you might remember featured prominently in the Steve Carell comedy 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Now, if your only exposure to the band has been in 40-Year-Old Virgin, where Steve Carell’s character is also mocked for having a framed Asia poster, then you’re missing out. While Asia joined the ranks of bands with 80’s hits, thanks to “Heat Of The Moment,” the group was actually a progressive rock supergroup born from the remains of the progressive rock triumvirate of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, and King Crimson.

The new album (pronounced “Triple X”), the name of which is a Google-search disaster waiting to happen if you ask me, will be available in CD, collector’s edition CD/DVD (featuring new music videos and behind the scenes footage), and on a limited edition vinyl. The album’s first single “Face On The Bridge,” will be released digitally worldwide on Monday, May 14, 2012. You can watch the video for the song here below. As with previous Asia albums, XXX will also feature cover art from Roger Dean, whose work you’ll recall from many classic Yes albums, as well as Uriah Heep and Budgie. The cover art for XXX is here below.

“We’re very pleased with, and confident about, XXX,” says John Wetton. “It encapsulates, lyrically and instrumentally, the essence of the band today. However, it is the very same four people that gave you the original, iconic album 30 years ago. If you loved it then, you will love it now.”

Says Asia’s guitarist, Steve Howe; “We wanted to recapture the energy of the first album, ASIA has always been about great songs, fantastic musicianship and I am sure fans of the first album, will fall in love with XXX.”

The 30th anniversary edition of their debut album Asia will feature two audio CDs (a re-mastered edition of the debut album, plus a CD of live rare tracks), an expansive historical booklet, a limited edition ASIA T-shirt, goodies from ASIA’s 1982 tour, plus a DVD of the new band documentary: ASIA – 30 Years On. A newly commissioned painting by artist Roger Dean updates the symbolic dragon and pearl from 1982 to 2012, the Year of The Water Dragon (in the Chinese calendar).

The original Asia line-up reformed in 2006 for the first time in 23 years with the intention of doing just one reunion tour, but have since completed several world tours and two studio albums (2008’s Phoenix, and 2010’s Omega), as well as two live albums and DVDs recorded in Japan and the UK respectively.

The Asia XXX 30th Anniversary Tour World starts in Japan in September, then moves to the U.S. in October, and onto the UK in December. Tickets for the UK leg of the tour go on sale this week.
