Guillermo Del Toro Lines Up Horror-Western ‘The Bloody Benders’ With Angry Films

Bloody Benders Grave Sites

The always-busy Guillermo del Toro is setting up yet another project he’ll act as a producer on.

The master storyteller, writer, director, producer, author, game maker, and all-around geek god and his Necropia Entertainment are teaming up with Don Murphy and Susan Montford and their Angry Films banner to option The Bloody Benders, a spec script by Bryan Singer protege Adam Robitel.

The script is based on the very real story of the Bender family, who ran an inn on the outskirts of Kansas’s prairie lands in 1873. In the same vein as Hitchcock’s Psycho (long before it ever existed), many travelers checked into the Bender’s inn and were never seen or heard from again.

The story is said to be a “perfect mixture” of the western, horror, thriller, and love story genres, which is pretty exciting. Nothing quite like a good genre mutt!

Of the project, del Toro said:

“It is a beautiful and brutal yet poetic story, based on a very famous case.

If you consider America back then, it was a great transition to modernity, but on the prairie, these were huge landscapes where people traveled and days and weeks on end would pass without communication. So nothing happens, then there is this brutal murder, and then it’s back to pastoral peace and quiet. That rhythm was very attractive to me.

The time was so lax back then that the sheriff would show up and say, “˜What is that odor coming through the vent that smells like decomposing flesh?’ and the Benders said they didn’t know. And the sheriff said, “˜Would you mind if I take a look”¦tomorrow?’ Nobody was in a hurry, and that is a big reason why they got away with it.”

Del Toro just finished filming his upcoming monster movie Pacific Rim and will be doing post-production on that for the next year or so. He said he’ll be working on polishing up the script with Robitel, but he expects his partners at Angry Films will want to find a director for The Bloody Benders soon instead of waiting for his schedule to free up some.

This is not the first time del Toro and Angry Films have teamed up, either. They’re still working together to find a good home for Guillermo’s ultimate passion project, At the Mountains of Madness, his massive $150 million horror movie adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s novella of the same name. The project was getting ready to go at Universal before the studio backed out, breaking the hearts of many, because del Toro stood firmly by the need to make the movie R-rated.
