Remember last month when District 9 star Sharlto Copley was in talks to star as the villain in Spike Lee‘s Oldboy? Well, talks have ended, and its confirmed that Copley is the villain in the American incarnation of Oldboy. The film is based on the South Korean thriller and manga of the same name.
Josh Brolin will play as the film’s protagonist, a man who is randomly kidnapped and incarcerated in a hotel room for years. Then for unknown reasons, he is released from his imprisonment. He then goes off to find the very people that were responsible for this heinous act.
Colin Firth and Clive Owen were among some of the biggest names that were offered the villainous role, but had to turn down since they could not fit the movie into their schedules. Deadline was the first to break the story and offered a slim detail about the upcoming film, which is being penned by Mark Protsevich.
Adrian Pryce is a mysterious billionaire trying to destroy the life of Joe Douchett (Josh Brolin).
Now that the major characters are set in place, we could be hearing of supporting roles being cast very soon. Oldboy is scheduled to begin production in September.
Copley will star alongside Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in Neil Blomkamp’s sci-fi thriller Elysium, which hits theaters in March 2013. He also has a role in Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Open Grave. Copley will play a man who wakes up in a pit full of rotting bodies with no idea how he got there, who begins to have flashbacks of himself murdering people and starts to believe he’s the killer.
