Release date: April 24, 2012

Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: Episode One – A New Day is now available on PC, MAC, Xbox LIVE Arcade, and PlayStation Network.

The five-part episodic adventure allows players to meet familiar characters and visit locations from the zombie-infested world created by Robert Kirkman, foreshadowing the story of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead comics.

Episode one of game series, A New Day, introduces Lee Everett, a man convicted of murder, now given freedom and a chance at redemption in a world devastated by the undead.

Intense life or death situations force the player to explore the darker sides of human nature as there are no rules in this new post-apocalyptic world.

Decisions made during gameplay may or may not have visible effects by the end of each episode, but many decisions you make will resonate throughout later episodes.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead is essentially a point-and-click adventure in the same vein as classics like Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island. A welcome addition to the formula, however, are quicktime-style zombie survival encounters reminiscent of action segments from Heavy Rain.

The Walking Dead Episode One Review

This isn’t Left 4 Dead or Dead Rising, Telltale’s game isn’t a non-stop zombie shoot’em up, but rather an exploration of what happens in-between these inevitable encounters.

You become emotionally invested in the character of Lee his newfound sidekick, Clementine. Much like the comic and AMC’s television series, Telltale’s take on The Walking Dead focuses on character than action.

You’ll find yourself exploring locations and interacting with survivors just to hear their stories. By talking with these characters you begin to build relationships, which in turn define your character through dialogue choices.

It’s very personal, emotional experience where choice plays a huge part – at times you have mere seconds to decide whether to save one survive or forsake another.

Telltale wisely utilized stylized cell-shaded graphics, allowing the five-part episodic series to feel like a natural extension of Kirkman’s comic book series. The game looks beautiful, the cinematic presentation lends itself to characters whose expressions are conveyed with subtlety.

The Walking Dead Game Review Xbox

There’s been a lot of talk about truly interactive narratives in video games, and while most games chalk up these interactive moments to limited dialogue options and cut scenes, The Walking Dead delivers a truly interactive experience where the player is tasked with confronting heart-stopping conflicts and breathtaking survival scenarios.

Beautiful, intense, and tragic, Episode One – A New Day is one of Telltale’s best efforts to date and truly represents a brand new day for interactive entertainment.

Episode One – A New Day is the first of five monthly episodes of The Walking Dead games series and is available for 400 Microsoft Points on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360. It is also available for $4.99 per episode on PlayStation Network, and is available as the first part of a five episode season pass for $24.99 on PC and Mac from the Telltale Online Store and other digital outlets.

The Walking Dead: Episode One – A New Day is rated ‘M’ (Mature) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence and Strong Language by the ESRB. Check out this wonderful trailer which highlights the game’s story:
