After being rumored for quite a while, it’s been officially announced by Bethesda Softworks that a massively multiplayer online game based in the world of their hit video game franchise, The Elder Scrolls, is on the way.
The game, titled The Elder Scrolls Online, is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and led by game director Matt Firor, who has been involved in developing online games for over twenty years now.
Of the announcement, Firor said:
“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted.
It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”
Not much is known yet about the game, only that it’s set one thousand years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, when a Daedric prince named Molag Bal (who might be familiar to some Elder Scrolls die-hards) is trying to bring all of Tamriel into the hellish realms of Oblivion. Perhaps even more exciting, the game will open up the entire world of Tamriel to players, allowing fans of the series and newcomers alike to visit the many provinces and locations of previous games…whichever ones existed a millennium before we first visited them, anyway.
