Neil Young Journeys

Neil Young is the subject of an upcoming new documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Demme, entitled Neil Young Journeys and by the looks of the trailer, this appears like another bullseye for the seminal, legendary rocker and on equal par filmmaker, both who have storied, rollercoaster-style, yet ultimately successful careers.

Watch the trailer here below.

Young remains at 65 years old one of rock and roll’s curious and influential enigmas, with his youthful vitality and earnest approach to his songs, which range from sublime quiet numbers to high octane out and out rockers. He’s been on the music scene since the 1960s, trailblazing his way through a bunch of different bands along the way, like Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, as well as his own Crazy Horse lineup. His influence stretches wide and far to this day as each generation of rock and rollers embrace Young as an at-once elder statesman in the rock community and a still viable artist.

Now with Journeys, Demme captures Young in all his glory and down to earth personality, visually archiving his 2011 solo tour with the key stop at Massey Hall in Young’s native birthplace, Toronto, Canada. Juxtaposed with a road trip through Ontario in his vehicle, a classic 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young makes a pit stop to the town of Omemee, a small rural community where he spent a lot of his years growing up, shaping his ideals and who he would become ultimately. Young waxes about his neighbors and family and laments about the changing times which led to an almost unrecognizable landscape he now witnesses here in the 21st century. It leads to Young firmly sticking to his memories of his past.

Demme is no stranger to films about musicians, as he directed the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense film, regarded by some as one of the great music documentaries/concerts of all time. He also is best known for directing The Silence of the Lambs and various other cinematic productions.

Neil Young Journeys will be released in theaters on June 29, 2012 and should be a nice look inside the mind and soul of a man who shaped his musical career by giving us constant glimpses into both.
