The Creators Of ‘Epic Movie’ To Parody ‘The Hunger Games In ‘The Starving Games’
eelyajekiM   |

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer

Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, those directing geniuses who brought you movie spoofs such as Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, etc., are coming back to write and direct The Starving Games, obviously a hilarious stab at the hit movie The Hunger Games. Like their previous films, the movie will also incorporate elements from recent blockbusters such as The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There could be more humorous takes on blockbuster films, but these are just a few of the films that Variety mentions in their report.

Let’s face it: Seltzer and Friedberg don’t deliver the highest quality of filmmaking, in fact all of their films have been movies that make fun of other filmmakers. But to me, they really set the bar low on filmmaking. Out of all the films they have written, directed, and produced, all but two has received a double digit rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and even then that movie was still rotten. And some how studios keep finding a way to finance and distribute their films.

Rights for the project have already been purchased in Germany and the Middle East and K5 plans on selling the rest of the international rights at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The two are currently working on The Biggest Movie of All Time 3D, which is said to be a parody of Avatar.

It is quite depressing to hear of news like this. When movies like these come out, they take away theater spots from other films that deserve to be seen. These so-called-humorous takes on blockbuster films are the least bit humorous and are panned by critics. But it’s the Seltzer and Friedberg fan base that continues to fuel the need for movies like these to be churned out. Hopefully The Biggest Movie of All Time 3D and The Starving Games gross little enough (and when I mean little I mean like six to seven figures at most) that these movies stop getting into our theaters.

    Haters gonna hate

There is no redeeming quality to these films at all.  They are far from funny, and only the lowest common denominator find them so. Simply referencing a popular movie doesn’t make it funny…Superman farting isn’t funny, Spiderman falling down isn’t funny, these movies are not funny.

    I am their audience.
    I’m also a stoner.
I think there may be a correlation there.
Sometimes funny is just funny. It doesn’t need to be artsy or intellectual. It just needs to be funny.

Ehhh but most of these attempts at humor really miss the mark. I, too, am a stoner who appreciates a comedy that just aims for silliness. I think their parody films are more like bad SNL sketches of late.

    Except it’s really not funny.
