Pixar’s Filmmakers Offer Few Details About ‘The Good Dinosaur’

Bob Peterson

Pixar has had absolutely no trouble with finding stories to tell, at least that’s what they say. But they’ve brought toys to life, shown us robots are capable of loving emotions, proven that not all monsters are evil, and that even something as small as a clown fish will stop at nothing to find his beloved son. So now they will turn back the clocks so far back that there weren’t even clocks. The Good Dinosaur will be the studio’s first film set in the prehistoric era, and they now offer a few tidbits about the story and what inspired them to create it.

In an interview with 24 Frames, director Bob Peterson said:

“It’s time to do a movie where you get to know the dinosaur, what it’s really like to be a dinosaur and to be with a dinosaur.”

Imagine the asteroid that was supposed to kill the dinosaurs never actually striking Earth. Instead it just whizzes by the planet, and the dinosaurs continued to live and thrive for many years. That’s what this movie will explore.

According to co-director Peter Sohn, the film has a deceptive title and that there is a deeper meaning to it. So with the good, there has to be a bad. So obviously there is a bad dinosaur. How this plays into the story of The Good Dinosaur, we don’t know. But the co-director confirms that there will be a bad one.

I was fortunate enough to attend the D23 Expo last year, and caught a glimpse of the logo for The Good Dinosaur. It showed what looked like a brontosaurus and a little child. However, this did not confirm that there will be humans walking amongst the dinosaurs. The filmmakers stopped short of actually acknowledging that part.

So like any good filmmaker, the crew did some extensive research. If you haven’t seen a behind the scenes or making of any Pixar movie, I suggest you do it now because its just as exciting as the movie itself. According to Peterson they visited various natural history museums and looked and many fossils so that they could acquainted with the structures of the various life forms that had lived in the prehistoric period.

There is a lot more on the 24 Frames article, including how Petersen has approached the script and the kinds of secrets they have been keeping about the movie itself.

Although there is no voice cast confirmed, we do know that the film will be released on May 30th, 2014.
