Disturbing Revelation: SDCC Bans Strollers, But Pedobear & Furries Are Still Allowed Inside
space
Tom Cheredar   |

Pedobear

Not to get everyone riled up, but San Diego Comic-Con International’s management team just sent out a bulk email informing attendees of this year’s show that strollers (both regular and jogging) are no longer allowed within most areas of the convention space.

Meanwhile, dudes creepily dressed as Pedobear and… creatures dressed as furies will be allowed in without so much as a second thought by convention security.

I wonder if the management considered that, without a means of strapping the young’uns into a cloth prison with wheels, there is a good possibility that the number of wandering children on the convention floor will multiply exponentially. Obviously, I don’t have to explain to anyone reading why the Pedobear cosplayers are likely giddy with excitement by this development. But the problem of those goddamn Yiffing furies in this scenario is worth an explanation.

See, kids usually identify adults wearing big cuddly fuzzy costumes as friendly animals that are coincidentally also found within Disney theme parks. That means there’s a good change that the kids will dart over and start hugging anyone that fits this description. It’s pretty disgusting to think about the last time any of those fury costumes were dry cleaned for… um… really evil stains, but you’re also putting those kids at risk of contracting herpatigitus A, B, and C, as well as lord knows what else.

Not only is this gross, but it’s irresponsible to do something that will actually increase the number of kiddos wandering around the convention space.

So seriously Comic-Con management (and San Diego Fire Marshall), think of the children.

Also, be sure to check out Geeks of Doom’s SDCC 2012 coverage all week.

(And just because I want everyone to see I’m not making it up, below is the full message from Comic-Con Management)

Via Comic-Con International:

NEW FOR 2012: STROLLERS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE PROGRAMMING ROOMS

For safety reasons, the Fire Marshall will not be allowing strollers inside the programming rooms. This includes rooms 2, 4, 5AB, 6A, 6BCF, 6DE, 7AB, 8, 11AB, 23ABC, 24ABC, 25ABC, 26AB, 28E, 32AB, Ballroom 20, and Hall H.

Stroller parking areas can be found throughout the Convention Center. Parking will be free of charge and provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note: Comic-Con will not provide security or check-in/check-out for the strollers

For more information and a PDF of the locations please visit the Important Information page of our web site:

Also, jogging style strollers are not allowed at Comic-Con.

Thank you for your cooperation.

  1. Ah, it’s funny because a person in a geek blog has as much knowledge in spelling as he does about anything else. This must be that hipster irony I’ve been hearing about.

But I would agree the stroller thing is dumb.

    Comment by Tantroo_McNally — July 11, 2012 @ 5:02 pm

  2. Well, that’s just stupid. If I had a small child, but couldn’t take a stroller, I most likely just wouldn’t go. (I wonder if they’ve thought about a drop in attendance?)

    Comment by Kat — July 11, 2012 @ 4:28 pm

  3. Thanks… (I think?)

    Comment by Tom Cheredar — July 11, 2012 @ 10:20 pm

  4. Kids that young won’t enjoy it anyway.  Don’t bring them.  Get a babysitter.

    Comment by john G — July 12, 2012 @ 8:42 am

  5. I’ve always said I wish theme parks like Disneyland or State Fairs would have a stroller free day! There may be people who actually leave their kids behind if they can’t take strollers through the place. Also think about the amount of space strollers take up and what a pain it is when they are everywhere. I think it’s brilliant that they aren’t going to allow them in most places.

    Comment by CJ — July 12, 2012 @ 10:05 am

  6. People should not bring children who are small enough to need a stroller to Comic Con anyway. It is far to chaotic and there are far too many people crowded in that place for people pushing strollers not to cause major traffic jams in the exhibition area and in the panel rooms. Comic Con really is not for little kids. I would be very nervous taking my child into a situation that crazy.

    Comment by Hugomarink — July 12, 2012 @ 12:51 pm

  7. As a Furry, and a member of a dozen other fandoms represented at SDCC, I’m offended by your article.  Furries are NOT a fetish – get the fuck over it.  There are a hand full of furries that do treat it as a fetish.  You find the same in the 501st Storm Trooper Brigade, The Klingons and more…I’ve attended some of the parties.  Trust me.  It happens.

Do some god damned research on Furries instead of smearing them every chance you get.

In 28 years of staffing conventions, I’ve met literally hundreds of thousands of fans, and I have always been treated as just another fan – not one person has ever made fun of me or said they were disgusted by the fact that I am a Furry.  You are ignorant, and this article shows it.

  8. And here’s a ‘geek journalist’ that has no idea what he’s talking about

    Comment by Lol — July 12, 2012 @ 2:19 pm

  9. God forbid people wear COSTUMES that don’t show off their anorexic bodies or at least have boob windows.

Really, now, thinking that everyone in a Pedobear costume is declaring themselves as a pedophile and ready to act on those urges is about as stupid as thinking that everyone in a ‘furry’ costume is trying to have sex in said costume. They’re internet memes — i.e. people wear them to be funny and have a good time.

The worst anyone in a furry costume can do is be a voice-muffled klutz who needs to sit down and cool off every couple hours. Strollers, on the other hand, are about as big and clunky as wheelchairs — which means they compete for the same handicap-accessible spaces as wheelchairs do, which makes everyone’s experiences worse. If you need to strap your baby down somewhere, there are slings and carriers that you can wear on your person for the same effect, and take up far less space on the convention floor.

  10. You seem rather prejudiced against Furries here. Beyond heresay and naysayers, what do you base your accusation of “those goddamn Yiffing furies in this scenario” or your citation of “evil stains” and “herpatigitus A, B, and C, as well as lord knows what else”? You seem to be denigrating an entire shared interest group based upon pejorative and insulting stereotypes spread by those who disagree with said interest group. By that logic I could describe geeks as “Spotty, basement
dwelling adult children” though I am not going to because I am a rational adult who does not tar entire groups with a single brush because I disagree with them (as well as being a geek myself, but that is not the point here).

Also as for Cosplaying in it’s many forms (which is the real issue here if you decode the loaded language) , I understand why from an organisational point of view it is accepted whilst Strollers are not. Most cosplays, will be based around the general shape of the person wearing them, and therefore will only take up marginally more space, depending on how elabourate the costume is, than an average convention goer. Strollers are large and unwield, which poses a problem in an already limited space that most convention floors generally are. Whilst, judging from the little press release, they have handled this in a less than optimal manner, there is at least logic to their process. I also agree with Hugomarink that children that small probably should not be at this kind of event at all.

  12. Ermahgerd! Er gurt Herpatigitus Berrrr!

    Comment by Frazzle Digbyrazzle — July 12, 2012 @ 3:36 pm

  13.  Also, I would like to clarify now I am not screaming “Fursecution,” I generally don’t have an issue with people disagreeing with the Fandom, since as a hobby it is a matter of personal choice. What I disagree with is how you have misrepresented the issue here behind loaded language.

Also, apologies for the strange formatting of the comment, I’m not 100% sure what happened.

    Comment by Dom Barlow — July 12, 2012 @ 3:37 pm

  14. If you haven’t been to a convention, then you wouldn’t understand why costumers are ok while strollers aren’t. Especially at SDCC, floor space is at a premium. People already bump into each other on a regular basis, can you imagine what strollers would end up doing? There would be injured children everywhere. Not to mention, anyone under the age of 12 really doesn’t have any business to going to SDCC. They’re not going to understand anything going on, they’re gonna get hurt or lost, and the parents will get pissy over the language abundant through out the event.

    Comment by Sable Drakon — July 12, 2012 @ 3:37 pm

  15.  You can edit your comment and fix that formatting, you know.

  16. As one who was once a furry hater, time to educate you.
    1. Strollers, due to their bulkiness, can cause damage to walls, vending tables, and people should they knock into anyone’s legs.
    2. If your kid needs a stroller, they don’t belong at comicon. If you can’t keep an eye on your kid, you shouldn’t bring them to comicon. Plain and simple.
    3. Furries are no different than cosplayers- their costumes are just covering their entire bodies. There is, in fact, a difference between furs who have sex in suits, and those who use their suits to cosplay. Typically, one who has sex in their suit, which is a very small minority mind you, will not wear that same suit out, being that it usually reveals that it’s used for sexual purposes, (zippers in the crotch, suspicious holes, etc.)4. Any furry can tell you, with the mony spend on either making or purchasing a fursuit, any sensible suiter will keep their suit well maintained. They’ll usually wash the heads, clean up the body suits, repair or replace parts as needed.5. A lot of furries with cosplay suits use them at events like SPCA fun raisers, charity events, cancer walks etc, sometimes for their own amusement, but also, a lot just like to make people happy, which, in most cases, seeing a fun-looking creature at an event does this. So why is it such a big deal if kids want to hug someone in a suit? They could be dirty perverts, they could be normal people. But you don’t know that, do you?6. The stroller issue is completely valid as a fire hazard, and this is not the only convention to do this. This is only being done to keep people safe.7. Not every furry “yiffs”. Some just like their characters and their art, like i do.——If you’re going to write an article complaining about furries, you need to first of all, make sure the main issue of the article actually is relevant to your argument. Furries being allowed to suit at conventions has NO correlation to strollers being banned for safety reasons. Especially not if you do our research on fursuiters. Read up on it next time you decide to whine, and learn to how proofread an article before you post. This article is ridiculous.

  17. So I can, many thanks for pointing that out!

    Comment by Dom Barlow — July 12, 2012 @ 3:47 pm

  18. Who in their right mind would bring a small child to a convention in the first place? I have a 2 year old nephew and I can only imagine the amount of merch and memorabilia he could destroy while strapped to a stroller? Have you ever heard of a BABY SITTER? They are super great to have around when you as a parent are going somewhere that is not child friendly like a convention! Also, the idea that furries are people with enough spare money laying around to pay $700+ for a suit EVERY TIME THEY HAVE SEX!  Most of the suits can not be cleaned and I’ve known more fursuiters that go around to charity events and such to DO THE SAME JOB AS THE PEOPLE AT DISNEY PARKS DO than ones that use those suits for sex! Also, seeing as fursuiting counts as cosplaying I imagine you could petition them to ban costumes all together but then how would your children be exposed to all the half naked girls and nighmare fuel costumes that everyone else wears! Yea, these costumes are waaay more kid friendly than a giant stuffed animal! http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/comic-con-2011-cosplay-costumes12-465×697.jpg http://l2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/yZSMQq.XTOv9UFSBIXrIkg–/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00MjA7cT04NTt3PTYzMA–/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/Movies/PhotoG/comic-con-costumes-2011-61486.jpg

  19.  Wow. What are you, twelve? This article is nothing but sweeping generalizations, misinformation, and ‘facts’ based solely on the author’s supremely biased opinion. I get the ‘humor’ tag (the understanding of furries in this article is laughable), but why is this tagged as ‘news’?

    Comment by Guest — July 12, 2012 @ 3:29 pm

  20. And these two stories are related HOW?  Its about the same as going to an Anime con, saying they won’t allow strollers but they will allow people to dress up as Sailor moon.  I fail to see a connection there.

    Comment by Yarrick — July 12, 2012 @ 3:57 pm

  21. The restriction on bringing strollers into panel rooms is equivalent to the restriction the National Zoo in DC has on bringing strollers into certain buildings and is done to prevent overcrowding, blocking of pathways, and similar.

As for the restriction on jogging strollers, I’d guess that’s a matter of keeping pathways open as well – those don’t really belong indoors.

    Comment by Tango — July 12, 2012 @ 5:16 pm

  22.  I read this article and decided to summarize it for everyone else (but with better spelling).

BAWWWWW, I CAN’T STRAP MY SCREAMING TODDLER IN A STROLLER AT SDCC. Rational solution? Write an article that hates on a group of people who have absolutely NOTHING to do with strollers, or their ban at the con. This person is a tool.

    Comment by Obsidian — July 12, 2012 @ 4:20 pm

  23. I find it great that the internet allows anyone, regardless of the lack of journalistic competence, to have a blog and voice their biases and ignorance. That said, this site is discredited by allowing Tom to post this without a review from an editor who knows what they are doing, or by the editor failing to think of the hazards such strollers cause in crowded convention halls during an emergency. This site has been tarnished by an article that is a waste of space, an amateur blogger who is a waste of time, and the unnecessary and unrelated hate is a waste of bandwidth.

    Comment by Red_cyberdragon — July 12, 2012 @ 4:31 pm

  24. Just as a point of curiosity, is this something you do in order to feel better about yourself, or are you actually that narrow-minded?

    Comment by Samuel Conway — July 12, 2012 @ 5:08 pm

  25. I’m kinda curious how you define ‘furry’. Do you mean people in the fandom itself, or do you simply mean anyone in an anthropomorphic animal costume. The two are very different since comic books are filled with such characters and I could name off a dozen just off the top of my head that people could be dressed up as, and that’s not even counting TV, movies, and books. Many of these people may not even know the fandom exists.

As for strolers, makes sense to me for the same reason as other people have said. There is also a device out there the is designed to strap your child to your back or chest to allow you to carry them without the encumbrance of a bulky stroller. Seen them used at my local gaming and anime cons and they seemed to work well.

    Comment by Moonshine Fox — July 12, 2012 @ 6:55 pm

  26. Ok first off, the reason they did that was because it is an evacuation hazard. Because of the size of the building and the risks today that happen in large population buildings, they must comply with local, state, and federal regulations regarding large population buildings and threats on our country. This includes from terrorist attacks, gas leaks, Bio Hazard attack, Natural Disasters, and the threat of the place going up in flames. They are REQUIRED by LAW to OBEY these REGULATIONS. If they didn’t there would be no con.

So go get some butthurt cream and actually learn how to write, and also learn biology.

    Comment by Foxxel Pobieski — July 12, 2012 @ 8:08 pm

  27. I don’t really enjoy being “that” guy that points out that thing, but..

Last time I checked people don’t really dress up as Furies anymore. You know? The mythical beasts in some of the older works?

But, Furries are everywhere, most of ’em are probably cleaner than you. Especially if your writing skills are the equivalent to your hygiene.

Please check your own posts before trying to be a Troll, because there is an extremely thin line between angering people and you know.. Being an idiot of the highest caliber. Congrats on the latter.

  28. If you don’t understand cosplay at SDCC, you should definitely not attend in future.  And seriously consider returning your Geek membership card.  Maybe rename your blog, too.

  29. The personal vendetta against certain types of nerds hidden under all this sperg rage is extremely palpable…

  30. Its just fandom bias, the old double standard, women with big bare titties in WOW costumes make him stroke his boner so thats okay, but people in animal costumes having fun!? DEAR GOD CALL THE FUN POLICE!

    Comment by Madeline Criswell — July 13, 2012 @ 12:13 am

  31. Note, too, that the ban on strollers is ONLY in the panel rooms. Not on the main floor or any other part of the convention center. It is not a general ban, but a ban in specific areas, as per fire regulations.

    Comment by Chuck Melville — July 12, 2012 @ 11:49 pm

  32. This article made me facepaw so hard. Not all of furry fandom is about the “adult” stuff. In fact the “adult” stuff is actually a minority in the furry fandom.  There are a couple of videos online with Uncle Kage in it where he goes about how the furry fandom is not a fetish. Last anime con i went to had anime stuff that was “adult” in plain site. Yet somehow it’s ok to bash on furry fandom, when other fandoms have the same stuff. Star Trek even has slash fiction, yet no one is slacking on Trekkies and calling it a “adult” based culture. Hypocrisy much?

    Comment by Dave Irvine — July 13, 2012 @ 1:36 am

  33. What
everyone seems to miss here is this was a decision by The Fire Marshal, not the
con itself.  What the writer of this
article doesn’t get is that Funny Animals like Sonic (seen in the image as an
example of “Furries”) are a big part of the comic book continuum.  Sadly, most people who write articles like
this don’t know what the term “Funny Animals” means any better than
    they know what “Furries” means.

    On the other
side of things, Pedo Bear is a comic character.
So is Fritz The Cat.  Comic Book
Fandom is made up primarily of adults who might or might not be kid safe.  You can hardly tell by appearances.  On general principle I would think a busy
geek convention would not be the best place to be dragging small kids
around.  I’m surprised they allow small
children into any such convention at all.

    Comment by Perri Prinz — July 13, 2012 @ 3:07 pm

  34. Hold up one sec. I personally went to comic con in my fursuit and I find this entire article offensive. I would never have sex in my fursuit, nor I do not know any other furries that would.  I am pissed to see how ignorant some people can be towards the furry fandom, and to write an article like this without checking the facts is completely unprofessional. As a writer it is your duty to actually write about THE FACTS, not what you hear from the Tyra Banks show. Comic con was a blast in a fursuit since I designed mine to look like the big bad wolf. I did not once have a child come up to me and hug me, but I did have a few adults who did.

    Comment by Kanashoba — July 16, 2012 @ 4:59 pm

  35. Pedobear may be allowed in by security at comic con but the cops the dress causual there will boot the costume as soon as they see it. Not saying you shouldn’t wear it(if your young and not 30 years old) but get as many pics in as you can
