Outlander Book Series

A bit of old news on this slow Sunday, but our old friend Ronald D. Moore is back for a visit.

It was reported a few days ago that the Battlestar Galactica reboot developer/writer/executive producer and Caprica creator/writer/executive producer will work on writing an adaptation of author Diana Gabaldon‘s popular Outlander book series for Sony Pictures TV, with plans of turning it into a new series.

Most of Moore’s work we’re familiar with resides in the realms of sci-fi, but the Outlander books give him an interesting mixture of genres to play with. They’re primarily considered to be romance novels, but they also involve a great deal of fantasy and historical fiction, as well.

The books follow a World War II British Army nurse named Claire who’s mysteriously transported back in time to 18th century Scotland, where she’s thought to be an English spy and is forced to marry a young warrior named Jamie to protect herself.

The series spans seven books so far, with an eighth currently on the way, and has sold over twenty million copies to date.

Are you interested in a TV series based on the Outlander series, and if so, which network do you want to see it land on?

  1. Nope. Not interested in this. RDM’s best work will always be BSG. MHO he needs to return to that universe and develop more of the BSG Universe.

  2. HBO or Starz need to be the cable home for this series if its going to be given any justice! Diana writes far too well for her novels not to recieve the full glory that they deserve!

  4. I am so glad to hear there will be a series.  I would vote for HBO as it has the capacity to do it really well.  That is SO great!  I read the entire Outlander Series starting with all the books available in 2007. Which would have been the first 5 books.  I had been drawn into the stories so completely my family started telling me I was talking differently!  Anyway, when I had completed those 5 books, I missed Clare and Jamie so much I reread all of them again, followed by Breath of Snow and Ashes and Echo after they were avail.  Of course I am eagerly anticipating Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. And, yes, I do have a life outside of books!
I think a series has more potential to do Outlander justice much more than just a movie would as long as the series is just of Outlander(book 1).  One season for each book would be what most fans would hope for.  If they are well casted and directed even those that haven’t read the books will quickly become engaged. Congratulations!  Thank you so much Diana, for providing me MANY hours of enjoyment!

  5. yeah finally!! :D and I agree: It has to be HBO or Starz. Since the last season of Spartacus will be on air (on Starz) next january, and I have heard rumors of HBO wanting to end True Blood after the 6. season (which would also air next year afaik), why not? :)

  6. This is fantastic and exciting news! HBO would be great for the Outlander series as it is going to take many seasons of shows to portray the depth of characters and details in the books.  I can’t wait!
