You know him as the villainous Bane in this summer’s blockbuster film, The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy, but before actor Tom Hardy donned the Bane mask, he played the bad guy in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.
In Star Trek: Nemesis, Hardy starred as a young clone of Star Trek Captain Jean-Luc Picard named Shinzon who plotted the destruction of Earth. The film was the tenth one in the Star Trek franchise and the fourth and final one with the full cast of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, starring Patrick Stewart as Picard.
With the success of The Dark Knight Rises, a video of a screen test from Nemesis with Hardy and Stewart is making the rounds online again. You can watch it here below.
I imagine finding out that Hardy was bald bad guy in a Star Trek movie a decade ago is akin to learning that Boondock Saints star Sean Patrick Flanery was the bald albino in 1995’s Powder – surprising, I know. But yes, it’s true. And much like his overly-theatrical vocal performance in The Dark Knight Rises, a very young Hardy was even more theatrical doing his best Picard emulation in Nemesis. I wonder if Hardy’s current popularity, which has been on the rise since his turn in Nolan’s Inception in 2010, will prompt his newfound fans to watch Nemesis. If you dig Hardy, I recommend you check out Nemesis, as Hardy turns out a great performance. Though the film tanked at the box office and has been highly criticized as one of the worse films of the Trek franchise, I found it highly enjoyable when I went to see it in the theater 10 years ago and have watched it and dug it many more times over the years.

Nemesis was in no way as bad as Star Trek V or Insurrection.
