Justice League #12 banner

DC Comics announced Wednesday that longtime subjects of super power fan fiction Superman and Wonder Woman would be getting together and totally hooking up for the foreseeable future.

The cover for Justice League #12, from Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, is an image of a flying Superman embraced in an aerial make out session with Wonder Woman. The relationship, seemingly born out of a tragedy that shocks the superhero team to its core, is said by series writer and DC Entertainment executive Geoff Johns to be “the new status quo.”

Check out the full cover of Justice League #12, debuted at EW yesterday, here below.

According to EW, Jim Lee took inspiration for this cover from Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss and Alfred Eisenstaedt’s V-J Day in Times Square photograph.

Let me speak to those who dwell underneath rocks: For the longest time iconic superhero Superman, aka Clark Kent, was in a long standing, near century love affair with Lois Lane, reporter for the Daily Planet, which culminated in a marriage between the two. But alongside DC’s line-wide reboot, the relationship went the way of Stephanie Brown and was never seen or heard from again. Instead, we are now introduced to the new DC power couple of Superman + Wonder Woman (or Cliana, as I like to call it).

Naturally, fans, critics, and bloggers are having a field day with this news, and the creative team welcomes that, evidenced by what Jim Lee told EW, “Hopefully this will raise a lot of eyebrows. We welcome the watercooler chatter.” So, if it wasn’t clear prior to this comment, it should be now that this is yet another publicity stunt for the publisher. This appears to exist only to push units, not to further a storyline or done for creative purposes.

Personally, I was a fan of the Clark/Lois marriage, but I wasn’t really upset when they nixed the marriage. I always assumed that it would go back to normal, considering the fact that the Clark/Lois/Superman story is one of the greatest love stories of all time, but with this news, I’m surprisingly even less likely to get interested in what’s going on in Justice League. That’s a personal preference, obviously, but if you share that sentiment, there’s always Smallville.

Justice League #12 will be released on August 29, 2012.

  1. The new 52 was Q1 stunt, Before Watchmen was Q2, now this is Q3… All DC cares about is sales, most of the new books suck. Such mediocre work… Meanwhle, I am reading books from Image for the first time in 20 years, Saga, Prophet, Incredible, Walking Dead, all inspired innovative work. DC is almost dead to me… And I love Superman and the rest of the DC hero’s. I hope someday it will come around, but hey, sales are up so that’s proof that they made the right choice in their eye’s.

  4. Hang on there, it’s untrue to say Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane was really the story for 70 + years, even in the titular comic Superman spent many an imaginary story married to Lana, or Lori, in the books he hooked up with many others. For the longest time 50 + years Lois and Clark was a doomed romance. The message was sure they cared for each other, but it couldn’t work.

Meanwhile with Wonder Woman Perez rebooted and aged Steve Trevor out of the Love interest/damsel in distress role.

It’s okay to say I like the 90’s engagement/marriage story, because the world is boring without subjective judgement calls, but that story was a MASSIVE volte face on the canon relationship, sudden and jarring enough to be a soft reboot in itself. It was however an interpretation of an existing Elseworld/imaginary stories in which Clark married Lois, notably Earth 2.

With this reboot all that is happening is an existing Elseworld tradition, notably Earth 22 is being introduced, in this case more smoothly in terms of the narrative.
