Pixar always has something for their fans to look forward to every year, and next year will be the first time the studio has done a prequel. Monsters University will tell the story of Mike and Sully’s academic background. We saw a brief glimpse of what Mike and Sully did during their studies at Monsters University; now Billy Crystal is giving his thoughts on the film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Crystal compared the Dan Scanlon-directed prequel to that of Revenge of the Nerds.
[Mike and Sully] end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition “” like Greek Games in college. They have to mobilize a group, sort of like Revenge of the Nerds-monsters, and get them ready to be scary.
Comparing a raunchy movie like Revenge of the Nerds, Old School, or Animal House to Monsters University, you think you might see Mike and Sully do college activities, like getting laid, getting into drunken fights, or passing out in a pool of vomit. Of course since this is a Disney-Pixar film, there will be none of that, and here’s how Crystal says they avoid those kinds of activities:
They’re 17 and 18 years old in the script. My guy has a retainer, even.
A bit strange to see a 17 or 18 year old not engaging in the more mature college activities. I remember sneaking out a lot to participate in drinking and partying, but this is after all, a Disney movie, so I can understand why they might want to avoid that. But I love that Pixar will try to take a crack at making these usually rowdy college games into something family friendly.
Monsters University opens in theaters on June 21, 2013.
