Lionsgate Acquires Joss Whedon’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

Much Ado About Nothing

For Joss Whedon, 2012 has been one remarkable year. He was given the impossible task of putting egos in check for The Avengers and then he pulled Cabin in the Woods, which he co-produced and co-wrote, out of the vault and it was met with success. But he also directed an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing in what seems like a matter of days and with a very limited budget. Whedon has just finished pushing his film at the Toronto International Film Festival and now he can find comfort in knowing that the public will be able to see his film.

THR has word that Lionsgate and Roadside has completed a deal that would allow them to distribute the film. Much Ado About Nothing is set in modern day Los Angeles with the cast consisting of actors and actresses familiar with Whedon’s style of work. Playing the roles of Beatrice and Benedick are Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof, respectively. Then you got Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Sean Maher (also Firefly), Clark Gregg (The Avengers), and more Whedon alum members taking on the remaining supporting roles.

It’s comforting to see that someone of Whedon’s caliber is willing to go though a limited budget and shoot on time constraints. It’s even more comforting to know that there is a collection of actors who believe in the project as well as its director. Lionsgate was also the studio who saw the success in Cabin in the Woods, so imagine Whedon’s delight when he heard that they would be the ones to handle the film’s distribution.

“I’m thrilled to be working with my cronies at Lionsgate again, and with the Roadside team,” Whedon said. “That they all embrace a Shakespearean romance with the same enthusiasm they had for Cabin in the Woods shows that they’re exactly the mad fools we want to be partying — I mean working — with.”

Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing was met with high praise, and although Lionsgate and Roadside may have acquired the rights to distribute the film, it has no release date as of yet. Let’s hope that all changes before the end of the year.

  1. Anything Joss Whedon does, I will watch. Have to admire his loyalty to the troupe of actors he carries from project to project.
