In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the classic Rob Reiner fantasy film, The Princess Bride, as well as the new Blu-ray release, Reiner and cast members including Billy Crystal, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Kane, Wallace Shawn, and Chris Sarandon reunited at the New York Film Festival recently.

William Goldman, the author behind the 1973 book of the same name and the screenplay adaptation of The Princess Bride, was also on hand at the reunion, and, according to him, he very much wants to write a sequel…but has no idea how to do so.

Here’s what the now 81-year-old Goldman—who also won Oscars for his work writing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men—had to say about writing a sequel:

“I’m desperate to make it and write it and I don’t know how.

I would love to make it, more than anything else I’ve not written.”

As a movie fan, I’ve come to terms with the fact that movie companies make the most money via sequels and remakes and so on. Sometimes, if put in the proper hands, these movies can be good or even sometimes great (see: True Grit). But for me personally, as someone whose favorite movie of all time happens to be The Princess Bride, I find it hard to believe a sequel would ever be a good idea. Perhaps if it took place long after the events of the first film in the same world, and told an entirely new story with entirely new characters (with a cameos from some familiar faces from the original in their later years). That’s the only scenario I see being feasible, but it still feels unnecessary.

This isn’t the first time the cast and crew have reunited. Almost exactly one year ago they met up for EW, and also Good Morning America for some humorous reminiscing.

Would you want to see a sequel to The Princess Bride?

  3. There’s always “Buttercup’s Baby,” that little snippet that he put in the 25th anniversary edition of the book. That alone made me super anxious to see a sequel in one form or another.

  4. Haha, he’s been saying this exact line for at least ten years. The one chapter of Buttercup’s Baby he’s released isn’t too bad, but it just doesn’t have the charm. I can see why he’s having so much trouble with it. I mean, he had actually promised to have it out by the 35th anniversary (2009), but…”I sit down, and nothing happens”

    It’s a shame.
