Fox Doesn’t Like ‘Chronicle 2’ Script; Looking To Replicate Original

Chronicle

The month of January is usually a dumping ground for theaters. But almost everyone was blindsided with how good Max LandisChronicle was. Since the film brought in a nice amount of cash for Fox, the studio commissioned a sequel to be produced. Landis has been hard at work writing the script. But despite his efforts, it seems that Fox isn’t too happy with what he has turned in.

In a recent interview, John Landis (Max’s father) gave some rather troubling news about the status of Chronicle 2.

Here’s what John said:

“[Max] wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, “˜We want Chronicle again!’ And he said, “˜No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution,’ and they said “˜No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.’

It’s really no surprise that a studio, like Fox, would be butting heads with a filmmaker. It’s even less surprising that a studio would want more of the same thing rather than an “evolution” of the story. But it’s great to hear that Landis has written something that would be a fresh take on his creation. It would be interesting to take a look at the script and see what kind of changes Landis has made.

But like most studios, Fox would rather play it safe, instead of taking risks. Let’s just hope that Fox and Landis can find some sort of middle ground, otherwise I see this property heading over to a new writer.

  1. i cant believe they are bumping heads with Max sense the first movie did so well, why cant they just take a chance with this? They have done way worse with way more crappy movies. Letting the story evolve rather than stay staler is an awesome move and Max knows this, Fox is all about making a duplicate just cause they think it will make them the same money, but they fail to realize that if the movie flops from being dummied down, people are not going to like once it gets out and it will ruin the story.

  2. Fox playing it safe is the reason George Lucas retained all merchandising & licensing rights to Star Wars. You’d think they’d learn. Max Landis delivered a great movie. It’s only logical to give him the creative freedom to do it again. No one is going to want to see the same movie w/ a 2 slapped on it.

  3. Cthulhu, *why?! The first one was such a bloody awful movie, why anyone would want to replicate it or make a sequel of it is beyond comprehension to me.

  4. umm, No…the first movie was awesome and was something new and fresh. Thats why they want to replicate it, dont you know that it brought in over 100 million while only having a 12 million dollar budget? Doesnt sound like a crap movie to me.

  5. “awesome and was something new and fresh”…

    =collapses in hysterical laughter=

Oh, you’re serious… I don’t think we saw the same movie then ’cause the movie I saw was a hashed-up mixup of worn-out old storylines made exceedingly worse by wooden acting & crappy dialogue and finally topped off with what’s been the fallback for many movies that want add what they delusionally believe will be the touch of realism since Blair Witch Project: crappy shaky-cam footage.

Just because a movie does well at the box office compared to its budget *doesn’t necessarily mean it was a *good movie. It just means more people got suckered in by the ad campaign (like the friends who dragged me to see it).
