Hello There! This is Adam Frazier and you are listening to Skull-Face Island, the official movie podcast of Geeks of Doom! As always I’m joined by the Lap Dog of Dame Judi Dench, David Allen, and our lovable but dangerous, producer Tim Grant.
Today on the Show: We’ll discuss Scott Derrickson‘s new supernatural horror film starring Ethan Hawke, Sinister, and follow-up on our discussion about remakes from last week with news about upcoming reboots of Evil Dead and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
For our third segment, It’s October (I think?) on Skull-Face Island and you know what that means? Breast Cancer Awareness 5Ks? Good guess. Pumpkin Spice Lattes? Delicious, but no. Halloween? YES. Horror movies? DOUBLE YES! In celebration of this most grand and festive of months, we’ve decided to do a TOP FIVE list of our favorite horror films!
If you missed our previous transmissions, let me explain how this works. In the year 1991, US Flight 1313 experienced a mysterious, magnetic anomaly somewhere over the South Pacific. Engines failed, pilots cursed and prayed to their Gods, and three boys (that’s us!) washed ashore on Skull-Face Island, which of course is an ISLAND in the SHAPE of a SKULL! How cool is that!?
After exploring the dark interior of the island with machetes and bullwhips, we found an old communications array. Here’s the weird thing, it still works. Not only does it work, this thing is like Netflix, Amazon Instant, Video on Demand, and Apple TV combined – it’s got all the latest movies and television shows”¦
As a special bonus, here are our PICKS OF THE WEEK! These are strong recommendations made by each of us for you, the listener:
David: My pick for this week is actually two picks. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. These two classic sci-fi films are currently streaming on Netflix. Khan was directed by Nicholas Meyer in 1982 and is, I believe, the greatest film about revenge ever made. Search for Spock was directed by Leonard Nimoy (Spock) in 1984. These two movies define really great sci-fi films. Epic in scope and story, by thematically, they really play very specific points, Khan, of course, being about revenge, and Star Trek III really delves into analyzing relationships between a father and a son. Not to mention II has Kirk screaming Khan so loud it echoes into space and III has one of the best lines in genre film history, which I won’t say, in case you haven’t seen it. Also, Christopher Lloyd plays a Klingon and it’s awesome.
Tim: My pick is Argo. Directed by Ben Affleck, that’s right – THE Ben Affleck of such acting horrors as Gigli and Daredevil. Let me tell you guys, once people have seen Argo, Gigli may retroactively disappear from existence, Looper-style. The film is about a CIA “˜exfiltration’ specialist (Affleck) who must covertly rescue 6 americans trapped during the Iranian revolution of the late 1970’s under the guise of shooting a sci-fi film called Argo. What to look for: The importance of making films, even the shitty ones. This film also stars Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, and Victor Garber, all of whom are incredible and turn in thoroughly enjoying performances.
Adam: My pick of the week is J. Michael Muro‘s 1987 film, Street Trash. This is a pretty rare film – so I preface this recommendation by saying that you’ll have to dig deep to find it – but it’s absolutely worth your time. When a liquor store owner finds a case of Viper in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local bums and homeless people at one dollar a bottle. Unbeknownst to the small business owner, Viper causes its consumers to melt into into a technicolor syrup and explode, raining dirty, homeless meat chunks all over the city. Street Trash is easily one of the craziest, sleaziest films I’ve ever had the good fortune of watching.
