The Wolverine Header

Film adaptations have a nasty habit of changing lore in the properties they are based on. Take for instance X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Originally Logan (Hugh Jackman) only had a healing ability, which is why he is able to live for so long. However, a metal bonding procedure allowed the mutant to have an indestructible skeleton and inadvertently gave Logan the ability to produce claws. Now the film adaptation said that he was born with the claws as opposed to having gained the ability to unleash claws at will. These kinds of changes, while small, have a huge impact on how fans perceive the character – remember how mad Spider-Man fans were when Sam Raimi didn’t include artificial webshooters?

Now it appears that James Mangold‘s The Wolverine will return to Logan having these bone claws, but the film might not take place where you might think in the chronicles of the X-Men Cinematic Universe. While it’s confirmed that Logan will be in Japan, the film was thought to be a prequel. Check out a new photo and details on where in the X-Men timeline The Wolverine might take place here below.

In an interview with Empire, Mangold said this about where the film takes place:

Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all”¦ Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.

So there were five films in total, which makes The Wolverine sit last in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. How many characters we will see from the previous installments is still up in the air, but at least we know where this film takes place. Mangold seems to confirm that Grey is gone as well, which will put rumors of her appearance in the film at rest – that is unless she also gained the ability to transfer her consciousness into a comatose patient like Professor X did in X-Men: The Last Stand. Or she could be part of a flashback.

But The Wolverine itself isn’t placed in the right order according to the comics. In the comics, the Japanese storyline takes place before Logan joins the ranks of the X-Men. But in the 90s animated series, there is a similar story where Logan returns to Japan after losing his way. So we’ll see how Mangold interprets the story.

So what do you think about where The Wolverine is placed chronologically?

  1. Logan always had bone claws. You should actually read the comic “Origin” (which came out long before the movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” because it covered this clearly and in detail.

    The comic got it right.
The “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” got it right.
The upcoming movie “The Wolverine” got it right.
You (Michael Jay “Eelyajekim” Lee) did not.

  2. Your the idiot Mr. Scott. Wolverine didn’t have bone claws until after magneto stripped him of his adimantium.

  3. It’s already been established that there are scenes that take place in a Japanese prison camp during WWII (which would be at a point in Logan’s time line when he DID NOT have adamantium laced bones). This image is obviously from one of those scenes.

  4. Did you watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine? He always had bone claws. In fact, there’s a scene in which Sabretooth breaks his bone claws by stepping on them… I’m sure there are plenty of other scenes with the bone claws as well.

  5. What are you talking about, “Strong Man”? Wolverine’s claws have always been a part of him, and it was when Magneto stripped him of his adamantium that he discovered the bone claws. In addition, if you read the Wolverine origin story Origins, he again clearly is depicted as having bone claws.

  6. But, why are they making ANOTHER movie? They have a Wolverine movie already. I’m confused!

  7. What would the adamantium have been laced to in the first place if he didn’t have bone claws to begin with? Do you see the faliure in your logic?

  8. The idea of Logan having his claws to begin with was pure retcon introduced in Wolverine Vol.2 #75; originally it was said that he was given when he was given his adamantium by the Weapon X experiments, but then Marvel rewrote history after Magneto ripped out his adamantium in X-Men Vol.2 #25 by saying that he had his claws all along but just forgot them. Wolverine’s long and convoluted past has been retconned so many damn times(including a recent mind-bogglingly stupid revelation conceived by none other than Jeph Loeb), it’s no wonder I’ve been losing interest in what Marvel has publishing recently.

  9. When Magneto took away the adamantium it was then reveled that he did in fact had them all along butt since he had no memory of anything before the weapon x program he didn’t remembered, all you need to do is a little reserch, you are talking way out of your knowledge level.

  10. You got it wrong. In the miniseries “Origin” Wolverine was shown as a little boy with claws. The bone claws were there. The adamantium was bonded to those and created the steel claws we know today. Though throughout Wolverine’s life he’s had his mind wiped so many times that he has no real sense of self except vague flashbacks that tell him he’s been around a REALLY long time.

  11. i don’t know i think its rather stupid to have this (what was supposed to be a stand-alone story) movie having it set AFTER The Last Stand…I was at least hoping to have it happen BEFORE X-Men Trilogy and i would rather forget The Last Stand as not happening AT ALL
