Back in June, we found out that Ubisoft’s hit video game series, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, was being made into a movie. Most people tend to shrug off video games being turned into movies, as they tend to be on the not-so-enjoyable side of the line. But now comes word of a fast-rising superstar joining the cast.
Tom Hardy, who played Bane in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy-maker, The Dark Knight Rises, and also starred in films such as Inception and Lawless, has signed on for a role in the Splinter Cell movie. The script will be written by Eric Warren Singer (The International).
Hardy will play Sam Fisher, a super agent for the black ops sub-division Third Echelon, who could put the likes of Jason Bourne and James Bond to shame if handled properly.
Of the announcement, Ubisoft Motion Pictures chief executive officer Jean-Julien Baronnet had this to say:
“Tom Hardy is one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. In addition, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers today. We’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story for the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell movie, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”
The news also means that Ubisoft is serious about seeing their games shatter the assumptions that video games can’t be turned into good movies. Another one of their biggest titles, Assassin’s Creed, is also in the process of being adapted, with Michael Fassbender set to star.
