Patton Oswalt Gets Brutally Honest About The Failures Of ‘Blade: Trinity’
space
BAADASSSSS!   |

Patton Oswalt

When the first Blade movie hit theater screens in August of 1998 it became a surprise smash hit and accomplished several noteworthy goals: it gave Wesley Snipes an iconic movie hero in the mold of Rambo and John McClane to call his own, spawned one of New Line Cinema’s most lucrative franchises since the heyday of Freddy Krueger and the Ninja Turtles, and it proved that Marvel Comics characters could successfully headline their own motion picture adventures, thus paving the way for Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers to rule the box office in the years that followed. It took four years for a sequel to come together but with Guillermo Del Toro at the helm, Blade II surpassed the original in every way and became one of the best comic book movie sequels of all. The rapturous reception from moviegoers and critics that greeted Blade II helped revive Del Toro’s American directing career.

Expectations were high for a third Blade movie; at one point German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) was rumored to take the reins for a post-apocalyptic sequel that would have had Snipes’ monosyllabic vampire hunter continue his neverending battle in a world dominated by the bloodthirsty undead. Instead David S. Goyer, the screenwriter who was instrumental in bringing Blade to the big screen, signed on to write and direct the movie that would be released in December 2004 as Blade: Trinity. The end result has since been deemed by many to be one of the worse comic book movies ever made, if not the absolute worse. Make no mistake friends, if you’ve never seen the movie you’re not missing anything at all. It’s atrocious. In the annals of superhero it ranks with the likes of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Elektra. Blade: Trinity makes other maligned third chapters of comic book movie franchises like X-Men: The Last Stand and Spider-Man 3 look like masterpieces in comparison.

Much has been written since Blade: Trinity crawled out of theaters on its belly shortly after it made its premiere of the battles behind the scenes between Snipes and Goyer that far surpassed any and all of the movie’s many carnage-packed showdowns between Blade and his bloodsucking archenemies. One person who was there for nearly every dark second was actor, writer, and stand-up comedian Patton Oswalt. In a recent career-spanning interview with the A.V. Club, Oswalt, who had a small supporting role as a tech geek supplying Blade with some killer weaponry that barely gets used, talked extensively and candidly about the problems that plagued the movie’s production from the very beginning. Not surprisingly, executives at New Line Cinema took issue with the tone Goyer wanted to establish for Blade: Trinity:

There’s a scene where Blade goes in and confronts this guy for harvesting humans. That scene was supposed to be the whole basis of the film. Blade is fighting for the last shred of humanity. But they thought that it was just so fucking grim, so they decided to just have Blade fighting Dracula. It was just one of those; it was a very troubled production.

Oswalt learned soon after joining the production that due to his unorthodox acting methods the star playing the movie’s titular hero was less than approachable when the cameras weren’t rolling:

When I met him I was like, “Hi!” And he was like, “I’m Blade.” And also, Natasha Lyonne was on that set, and she was going through some kind of mental breakdown. Wesley is all boundaries, and she has no boundaries. She played a blind computer expert. So the first scene they had together, she put her hand right on his face, and he just recoiled. It was awesome.

According to Oswalt, Snipes dealt with his increasing lack of interest in the movie by turning to copious amounts of marijuana and sometimes his own insecurity would lead to tense showdowns with the besieged Goyer:

Wesley [Snipes] was just fucking crazy in a hilarious way. He wouldn’t come out of his trailer, and he would smoke weed all day. Which is fine with me, because I had all these DVDs that I wanted to catch up on. We were in Vancouver, and it was always raining. I kept the door to my trailer open to smell the evening rain while I was watching a movie. Then I remember one day on the set””they let everyone pick their own clothes””there was one black actor who was also kind of a club kid. And he wore this shirt with the word “Garbage” on it in big stylish letters. It was his shirt. And Wesley came down to the set, which he only did for close-ups. Everything else was done by his stand-in. I only did one scene with him. But he comes on and goes, “There’s only one other black guy in the movie, and you make him wear a shirt that says “˜Garbage?’ You racist motherfucker!” And he tried to strangle the director, David Goyer.

The slow deterioration of Snipes and Goyer’s professional relationship ultimately led to the director taking matters into his hands to deal with his temperamental lead actor in ways both humorous and dead serious, much like the tone of the Blade series:

So we went out that night to some strip club, and we were all drinking. And there were a bunch of bikers there, so David says to them, “I’ll pay for all your drinks if you show up to set tomorrow and pretend to be my security.” Wesley freaked out and went back to his trailer. [Laughs.] And the next day, Wesley sat down with David and was like, “I think you need to quit. You’re detrimental to this movie.” And David was like, “Why don’t you quit? We’ve got all your close-ups, and we could shoot the rest with your stand-in.” And that freaked Wesley out so much that, for the rest of the production, he would only communicate with the director through Post-it notes. And he would sign each Post-it note “From Blade.”

One of the problems Snipes had with the movie that he was not shy about voicing was the shifting of the narrative focus from Blade’s battle against the vampire hordes and their chosen leader Dracula (played by thick-necked Australian actor Dominic Purcell) to setting up a spin-off franchise based around the Nightstalkers, younger vampire slayers played by Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel who ended up taking away a chunk of Snipes’ screen time. As a result, the action hero would only show up for filming when absolutely necessary. Oswalt and the other actors found humorous ways to liven up the dour proceedings:

A lot of the lines that Ryan Reynolds has were just a result of Wesley not being there. We would all just think of things for him to say and then cut to Wesley’s face not doing anything because that’s all we could get from him. It was kind of funny. We were like, “What are the worst jokes and puns that we can say to this guy?” And then it would just be his face going, “Mmm.” “Smiles are contagious.” It’s so, so dumb. [Laughs.] That was an example of a very troubled shoot that we made fun. You have to find a way to make it fun.

Well I’m glad they had fun, but after one viewing of Blade: Trinity I was left wishing I had some of that primo shit Snipes was smoking in his trailer to relieve my psychic misery. Live and learn.

  1. Blade Trinity is far from a perfect movie. Still, I like it. It’s not nearly as bad Elektra…and I don’t hate that movie either.

  2. sorry, but as bad as Blade Trinity was, it still cannot beat out Halle Berry’s “Catwoman” as THE WORST superhero movie.

    Comment by burning_chrome — November 23, 2012 @ 2:46 am

  3. Blade Trinity was still better than Blade II. That movie was kinda terrible, and people only talk highly about it because they like the work Guillermo Del Toro went on to do afterward.

    Comment by Ono_Sendai — November 23, 2012 @ 7:00 pm

  4. Blade 3 better than 2? its like saying Spidey 3 was better than 2 as well. I didnt even know about Guillermo that time but Blade 1 and 2 were perfect transition for the character to film with great plots and out of this world fight scenes utilizing unique camera angles and slowmo effects. Blade 3 on the other hand used lousy shaky camera effects, with bland cinematography, horrendous 80’s style fight scenes and plotholes as big as an elephant’s ass

    Comment by James Anthony Huang — November 26, 2012 @ 11:33 pm

  5. I disagree. Blade 3 looked like a Blade movie. Blade II looked like a Joel Schumacher movie. Donny Yen had a 30 second fight scene which was a travesty and the whole plot boiled down to a lame villain’s daddy issues.

I am a fan, but Blade II and Blade Trinity are both pretty terrible. I think Blade Trinity is just slightly less terrible.

    Comment by Ono_Sendai — November 27, 2012 @ 7:52 am

  6. Blade 2 had some of the worst CGI fight scenes I have ever witnessed, and that Blade hunting ‘team’? Awful. Truly awful. Norman Redus’ character (calling him”B” for the whole damn film)? Awful. The Villain and his daddy issues? Awful. Trinity had a some decent fight scenes – much better than 2 – and IF you like Ryan Reynolds and LOVE Parker Posey – which I do – that is enough to make it a better – if not *good* – film.

    Comment by Jesse Bailey — November 28, 2012 @ 6:08 pm

  7. LOL, are you serious?

Better fight scenes than Blade 2? No freaking way. Ryan and Triple H’s fight scene was goofy at best and scriptedly corny at worst. It had no natural flow whatsoever.

The fight between Blade and “Dracula” was horrible. I love Purcell but it seemed like he was begging to not be in that film as there was NOTHING, NOTHING for his character to work with.

I’ll admit I didn’t like Blade 2 as much as the first movie, there were things that really annoyed me and I thought it needed MORE or better fight scenes than what it had, but I loved Donnie Yen’s character, I liked Ron Perlman and I liked Luke Goss. His fights with blade were visceral and completely unique. You won’t find another fight scene like it in any other movie.

Trinity was just such a fail movie…it felt like it was aimed at 13-year-olds and the Goof-Troop vampire sidekicks were just so ridiculous. I couldn’t take the movie serious, I didn’t have fun watching it and it was so goofy that I’d rather just believe Blade ended with the second one.

    Comment by William Usher — November 29, 2012 @ 12:23 am

  8. I did not like blade 2 at all! to be honest I thought it was shit, the fights were lookin like a cartoon, the sequel did NOT surpassed in any way! blade almost gets beaten by a mutated vampire homeless guy, seriously?! the fist blade was clearly the best and freakin badass!

    Comment by comic393 — November 30, 2012 @ 12:31 am

  9. Blade 3 looked like a Blade movie? the only reason it looked like a Blade movie coz it had Blade. I love Donnie Yen and even if he didnt get to fight, the other fight scenes were awesome and the title of the film is BLADE not Donnie Yen. Blade 3 on the other hand should be called Blade, Dracula, WWE and friends. Granted, the CGI in Blade 2 was not as realistic as 2012 movies go but at its time, it was perfect.

lame villain daddy issues? what did Blade 3 bring us?

    1. Corny one liners
    2. A DOZEN of lame forgettable support characters on top of the new whistler and Hannibal (which are the only 2 characters i liked in the movie)

    3. Dracula has to use a child to protect himself from Blade, then runs away like a bitch then a few scenes later, decides to attack Blade’s whole group alone? why not fight and kill Blade at the rooftop right there and then if he’s that badass?
    4. Dracula using a sword and armor… WTF?
    5. Then transforms into a demon… again, why not transform on top of the building and kill Blade right there?
    6. Shitty fight scenes between Triple H and Reynolds with 80’s shaky camera technique… actually, every fight scene except for the Blade breakout scene was shitty

    7. The fact that it had Triple H
    8. Over the top corny acting of Posey
    9. What was the ending all about?
    10. Why were they hunting werewolves at the end? Who next? Abominable Snowmen and Frankenstein?

With that said, Blade 1 still is the best of course….

  10. I loved this movie and Elektra is my second favourite movie of all time. I hate how people can just cut down movies. I love both comics, movies, books, games all separately and can appreciate them all for their story line and uniqueness. Stop crapping on every thing.

  16. Blade 2 is the best of the series in my opinion. Blade Trinity was a turd of a film. I reckon the plot should have been more like Daybreakers… 2019 Vampires rule the world, Human’s have been harvested for their blood. A small rebellion group led by Hannibal King and Whistler’s Daughter search for humanity’s last hope… Blade, who has been missing in action, either imprisoned, buried in a tomb, cryogenically frozen or so on.

    Comment by RawBeard — December 3, 2012 @ 4:25 am

  17. Blade Trinity is on the top of my list of guilty pleasure movies. I love it just because of the extremely cheesy one liners. And Ryan Reynolds abs of course. Those are nice too.

  19. Blade 3 is allright, and even though I like Del Toro, and Blade 2, I don’t agree at all that Blade 2 was better than the first. Critisism is so subjective.

    Comment by SNAlien — December 4, 2012 @ 9:42 am

  20. I fully agree, even though I haven’t seen Elektra. But Dare Devil wasn’t all that bad, I think. Catwoman was pretty bad though, in my humble opinion.
It’s funny how people have to insult other people for their intelligence, or refer to some kind of manual they think exist for what’s good and what’s not, if they like something they don’t. Maybe they are insecure?

    Comment by SNAlien — December 4, 2012 @ 9:51 am

  21. I loved the movie. What I liked most though was the bantering between ryan rynolds and parker posey and ryan rynolds and anyone. I liked how he tried to make Blade lighten up but after reading the above document I can see why that when ryan reynolds says,”he hates me doesn’t he?’, he really meant it. I enjoyed all the Blade movies. but trinity introduced me to ryan reynolds. I’m kinda partial to that one.

    Comment by Sheila Renslow — December 4, 2012 @ 11:33 am

  22. So, basically blame it all on Snipes. yeah, sure, like he came up with the premises to fight Campy ass Dracula.

  23. How on earth does anyone claim Blade 3 better then Blade 2?? Also I see a lot of Hate for 2 on here. Many complaints of CGI fight scenes. Personally I only remember a few bad CG scenes in it but most of the fights are real stunts so not sure what the bitching is about. Blade 1 is still the best story wise but 2 had better fight scenes and better villians. I loved to hate the blood pact. Blade 3 is utter trash and has nothing good in it. NOTHING!

    Comment by jawsfan2008 — December 6, 2012 @ 1:52 pm

Ask any Afro-Centrist and they’ll tell you that Africa was a technological powerhouse of scientists, builders, astronauts, and artists. Then for the giggle factor, ask them why modern day Africa or Haiti or any black dominated nation is a basketcase of sub-moron violent rapist retards too stupid to dig a well. 32. Oh I totally agree with the CGI it was terrible in some parts… Del Toro himself even rips that apart. But for me it was the highlight of the series. The new breed of Vampires “the reapers” were awesome and the film just had a cool stylistic tone that suited the character.

  38. The fact that you DARED to compare this, or any other watchable movie (and screw you Blade Trinity was minimally a C) to Spider-Man 3 shows you have no clue what you’re talking about. At all.

I won’t even get into the millions of reasons S3 was a barely watchable, cringe-inducing, crap fest all I need is one:

    The Venom Symbiote.

If you think any part of their portrayal of the symbiote was acceptable you have no business talking about movies.

    Is that it? That’s a cop-out.

I thought Blade: Trinity was pretty good. It’s a comic book movie folks…comic books. And I’m a comic book fan of 30 years.

    Am I missing something here?

  45. Catwoman is NOT a “hero” film, not even a damn comic adaptation – only the namesake was adapted and some small things here and there.

Catwoman is a movie about Halle Berry in latex. She tried too hard IMO. Michelle Pfeiffer was a better Catwoman because she could give off that very subtle insanity about her (insanity is NOT sexy outside of movies), and she managed to show that insecurity/vulnerability candy-coated with a self-taught sex-violence-anger-vigilante-anonymity (mask + costume) shell as a protective harness.

  50. Seriously? The original BLADE had too many ridiculous things happening to be anything more than an ok movie. I DO agree 3 was worse than 2, but MUCH better than one. Why, here’s justa a couple of points:

    1) Vampires use SunTan Lotion to come out during the day (That alone destroys any hope of a good vampire movie). If this is possible, what’s the point of the scary “Daywalker” they all seem to fear?

    2) The COUNCIL has existed for centuries, dominating the Vampire AND controlling the human world, but Deacon Frost (who was turned not too long ago) shows up, and they shit their pants and don’t move a muscle to defend themselves against him. Ridiculous.
There are more, but these alone take away a LOT from this movie’s cred.

  55. My opinions – just like everyone elses.
Blade 3, better. Getting Whistler back was an obvious retcon done badly. The aforementioned ninja vampire fight scene – crap. The lines, worse. But for me the major crappage was the end scene where after (by this point 1 and 1/9 Blade movies) we see vampires burst into flaming ash everywhere but Blade’s love interest gently falls apart and drifts away on the morning breeze.

Was B3 fantastic throughout? Not really. The ending was way too ambiguous. The fight scene with Reynolds and TripleH were off. It was never established if King had any leftover traits after being a ‘vampire cabana boy’ so any vampire, much less as massive as Jarko should have pulped him the first time he bounced him off the cement floor. Then after holding his own there, he’s overwhelmed by Posey (in his defense he could have been trying to hold back more snarky comments about her hairdo and was distracted).

    Still think B3 was better.

It’s like making a Superman movie where Clark Kent isn’t superman.

  66. I agree Catwoman is the worst…It is a “Razzie” Hall Of Famer…I don’t think Spiderman 3 was as much bad as it was disappointing.Man, they f’d Venom/Eddie Brock up. (Topher Grace?WTF!) And Blade 3 was bad,but Ryan Reynolds’ lines had me laughing a couple times.

  67. “It took four years for a sequel to come together but with Guillermo Del Toro at the helm, Blade II surpassed the original in every way and became one of the best comic book movie sequels of all.”

I had to laugh out loud at that. Thanks for making my day!

But then I had to go and check IMDB. Thankfully, Blade has a better rating than Blade 2. I guess that taste is subjective and all, but that claim is definitely over the top…

  70. I’ve been a Spiderman fan for years and years. Venom was my favourite enemy. Spiderman 3 failed to capture a good Venom. Sandman was unnecessary to me and if they didn’t add him, I think a Venom portrayal may have been much better. I don’t even think Topher Grace was a terrible Eddie Brock, though I think his acting could have been better polished. Some of his lines were corny.

    And emo Peter Parker…

  71. First off BLADE gave Snipes nothing, as he was the producer that helped make the movie happen. if anything BLADE GAVE marvel its first successful Movie endeavor. And who the hell is Patton Oswald? I thought he was some lighting guys cousin who snuck on the set.

You know you are famous when a nobody can bring up your name and get an article out of it. HAd he not mentioned SNIPES i bet he couldn’t get a free cup of coffee at a doughnut stand.

Goyer messed up the blade franchise when they let him direct. Anyone see THE INVISIBLE or UNBORN? Yeah so Maybe Wesley had a point when he tried to get Goyer to listen to him.

  73. Wesley Snipes is a douche-bag lol, thats funny to me because I always figured he was some serious martial artist who gets up and does Yoga or something, Idk, break boards and practice katas lmfao, he just smoked pot in his trailer and signed post-it notes as “BLADE.” I just watched Nas talk about his encounter with Wesley on Youtube, just look up VICE + Nas, he walked up to Nas and said “Are you a rapper or a scientist?” I still have no idea wtf that means… Blade 1 was alright I guess (with pot). Without pot its corny. I used to collect comic books before they became lame and Hollywood… Blade is just a stupid character imo, vampire hunter who in accompanied by techno music every time he shows up to put on his Ray-Ban shades, I wonder how much he got paid for that lol… I pretty much hate every movie having anything to do with my childhood, Spider-Man is so lame it makes me want to bludgeon myself, he comes slinging by and behind him theres a big ass American flag waving majestically like “Here we come to save the day!” So corny. Im surprised there was no bald eagle soaring next to him. They turned beautiful analog art-work into digital CGI, its all just sad tbh, They ruined X-Men for me, they’re well on their way to ruin Wolverine, Idk how thats possible but leave it to Hollywood. Iron-Man is terrible, a wanna’ be director trying to make money, Fantastic 4, ugh… Green Lantern… Well I never liked Green Lantern lmfao, who did? C’mon… Todd McFarlane whored out Spawn and destroyed it worse than the latest Indiana Jones, Daredevil was gay, Ghost-Rider, Elektra, omg that was TERRIBLE! It would be nice if these movies were made by people who actually has more than just money on their minds, even Batman… It started out good, Batman Begins and Dark Knight was great. It only took like, 20 years to get it right lol! Then Dark Knight Rises happened.. Tf happened?!? Its like Christopher Nolan lost his mind. Lets hope they don’t discover all the Image Comics, they’ll probably try to turn The Maxx into a CGI film, good god…

  74. Your logic is flawed. It is a historical fact that many of todays advancements are owed to the technological advances in early Africa. They did not include ipads or personal computers, but they were the most advanced for their time when human beings on other continents were still living in caves. As far as intelligence is concerned, you can find many places right here in America where 90% of the population are idiots – and they are not all “minorities”. If you want to know what has happened to Africa, just look up colonialism. And just for giggles, do some research and find out where all of these inventions came from that propelled some of these so called genius inventors into fame and fortune. You don’t really have to be smart enough to invent something if you can figure out how to steal it from someone else (Edison was the worst in my opinion). I don’t know you, but your assertions make you appear to be a closet racist or just ignorant (which is not exclusive to morons). Also, not knowing how to do something (i.e. dig a well) does not make you a idiot. In many places, culture dictates what rises to the top – in some countries, there are probably women geniuses who never have the opportunity or resources to make an impact on their community, society, or the human race. In Africa it seems to be the Alpha male dictator types who hold all the power and crush anything else that shows up – exactly the way some wanted.

I haven’t analyzed the movies, but the fight scenes in number one kicks ass. They are so well edited and gives maximum impact. That’s the main quality that surpasses number 2. Everything about it from dialogue to music just feels so real and dark (In the right way. I’m not a big fan of Nolan) I like a lot about Blade 2, but I just think that Blade 1 is more than just a good action movie.

    Comment by SNAlien — April 3, 2013 @ 8:51 am

  85. Well for starters, the special FX in the first film are quite ridiculous to say the least, especially the CGI. Also, I think the first movie takes itself a bit too seriously. The sequel is more fun. And last but not least, Ron Perlman. ‘Nuff said!

    Comment by bfg666 — April 4, 2013 @ 7:05 pm

  86. Maybe the cgi is worse, but the fight scenes in general are spectacular. Also it’s a matter of using it right. I think it looks stupid when they use cgi on Blade in B2. It does have a dead serious tone, and that doesn’t always work for me, but I think it works perfect for Blade. Ron Perlman is cool, true. Looking forward to Pacific Rim.

Reynolds was funny, (though he seemed to keep playing Hannibal in his subsequent films) and if filming was a mess, well it wouldn’t be the first film that went through a messy shoot but yielded a fun movie.

  112. Honestly, I prefer Trinity to Blade 2. I found the overuse of the new Matrix style of animated stunts to be too much to deal with and it was done poorly on top of that. The franchise was fine with real stunt actors doing the work, just hoist them up on a string and let them work. I hated the relationship between Whistler and Scud( I didn’t like Scud period), it was overkill even with how it turned out. You wasted having a martial arts talent like Donnie Yen in the movie. Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel stole the movie and Parker Posey. Was it great story wise, no but it wasn’t that bad either. I thought the blind geneticist with monitors was weird but hey it is what it is.

  115. Ummmm, sorry, but out of a LOT OF “COMIC BOOK MOVIES” incuding Spderman 3, Blade 2 and 3, Watchmen, and the new Batman movies, I watch Catwoman more!!!!
Yeah, it was doomed when they released the first picture months before the movie (everyone HATED THE COSTUME). Had they had a better costume, I think it would’ve broken even in the box office. But it was suuuuccchhhh a turnoff. The mask’s head looked more lion like than cat.
Plus the difference yet take from the Batman returns story (like the magic of the cat putting the new life back into Patience was taken from the scrapped section from Batman Returns. Bet people didn’t know that!)
Had they done a similar story to Catwoman 0/1 everyone would’ve applauded. Had they had a cool costume (what’s worse, The Batman animated series had a COOL COSTUME where it had the turtleneck look to it and the yellow goggles) it would’ve done better.
Catwoman is still the highest grossing female comic book movie. Also, what made the new Batman series a success and not a flop is b/c they’ve had SOOOOO MANY incarnations of him that doing something different works. Had they had a Michelle Pfeifer solo Catwoman movie, I think people would have accepted this one more, but b/c people wanted to see a truer to the comics (costume and story??? wasn’t this story different than the comics?) it would’ve worked. The new Batman would’ve flopped had they not had the Tim Burton, Joel S. versions. Sorry, that’s the truth…
Elektra, I can’t read the comics. They’re boring. I love the newer Pamela Anderson looking covers. I think had they given her the white costume with the HEAD SCARF In the beginning it would’ve made 10 million more. I think the different story is what doomed it. If she was a “good guy” that assassinated terrible people, that might’ve helped, but I think targeting younger kids doomed it also…
Elektra is another movie that I’ve watched over 30 times. Plus I got the unrated version.
I didn’t see Blade 2 at the movies. When I saw it on dvd I didn’t really like it compared to the FIRST movie. First movie is the BEST!!! Second movie was dumb in how they brought Whistler to life, only to kill him later. Dumbbb The CG was fake and who even wanted to do a mutated vampire for a story? they should have just had another vampire to deal with.
Blade 3 looked fake. The contacts ruined it somehow (Parker’s bothered me) Everyone getting killed AGAIN b/c somehow the vampires found the hiding spot pissed me off. Hiring Dominic to be DRACULA and not have him look like DRACULA but a modern day dude that coped with the new world with no accent or change of clothes was dummmmmbbbb. I just blame Dracula. And I have to agree if there were no other blacks in the movie, he shouldn’t be wearing “Garbage.” I’m not black and I agree with Wesley being pissed (not strangling but pissed).
I wanted to see the black girl from the first movie. What happened to her???

  120. The people who liked Blade Trinity the best in the series were never true Blade fans and prefer comedies. That movie should be staked and burnt to the ground. The movie was designed to be a bridge to an action franchise with what the studio believed would be more, ahem, “marketable leads”. They got the writers from The Simpsons to try to make it funnier for just the reasons the article cites: the studio wanted a less, following pun intended, “dark” movie that would appeal to the general, non-hardcore viewers. So what happens after a few years? Comic based movies get a resurgence as they become more dark and intense, the exact opposite direction of B3.

  122. I agree about Blade 1 vs 2. But it’s all subjective for me. I like Blade better than Blade 2 mainly because when Blade came out, there was nothing like it. It was peerless. Though Blade 2 is basically an almost perfect superhero movie, there were already other movies coming out with the same tone. Blade wasn’t perfect but it raised the bar so high, that everyone else had to follow suit or fail.

    Comment by Witchdoktor — July 28, 2013 @ 9:59 am

  123. Blade Trinity failed on all fronts. The cop-out use of Dracula and having him looking like a corny disco stud or foreign stereo salesman; the “team” compiled to be Blade’s back-up in their “honeycomb hide-out”; adding Triple H yet making him look like a buffoon instead of a badassss; too much comedy relief with Patton Oswalt Ryan Reynolds and Parker Posey; passing up the original Daybreakers story; allowing a hack like Goyer to direct a sequel to an already successful hit franchise; killing off Whistler. The only thing they did right was the use of Jessica Biel and her charactrer, Abigail Whistler, (though it was wrong to make the humans as strong as the vampires). The movie could have used more scenes with her and Blade.

    Comment by Witchdoktor — July 28, 2013 @ 10:11 am

  124. Im sure that was a major factor but it also didn’t help that they hired Goyer to direct though he had no experience directing big budget movies. Even worse they gave him complete control to even change the whole script which is part of why the movie sucked so bad. I think if they stuck with the original premise and made it a more serious movie rather than a comic book joke, Snipes would have been more cooperative and hands-on.

    Comment by Witchdoktor — July 28, 2013 @ 10:15 am

    Comment by Witchdoktor — July 28, 2013 @ 10:23 am

  127. Im sure the reason he was spending so much time getting high was because he was being usurped as a producer of his own franchise. Goyer totally derailed the whole film by taking over and changing the tone of the film. The first two were badassss while this was like watching Howard the Duck. Blade and the Superfriends haha. That’s not to excuse Snipes’ drug use but he is the star and if the star isn’t happy, you lose half the battle.

    Comment by Witchdoktor — July 28, 2013 @ 10:25 am

  128. Wow. Did I stumble onto the troll page or are peoples’ movie tastes just that bad? Blade 3 wasn’t that bad?? REALLY?? I can expect that from people who haven’t watched Blade or Blade 2 but for supposed Blade fans to say that Blade 3 was their favorite of the three tells me, there’s really is no accounting for taste. Blade 3 was definitely the WORST of the three. Campy tone, lame story, terrible casting, bad acting. It didn’t help that Snipes’ was in ego-mode but Goyer put him there by positioning himself as director and overlord of the whole movie and changing the story to a pedestrian piece of garbage, then doing a hack job of directing and editing.

Well if anything, Im hoping Snipes learned a lesson from all of his recent troubles and comes back a changed and more humble man though he’s way too old to play Blade now, if they ever revived the franchise.

    Comment by Kal Tourette — July 29, 2013 @ 9:35 pm

  142. “gritty grim characters which 90% stories in comics are” Seriously? I don’t know which comics you read but you must have skipped the majority of Marvel and even DC books (though the latter are usually more “serious,” if that can be said about a bunch of freaks in tights). Gritty characters like Batman, Wolverine or Blade are exceptions in the superhero world.

Also, you need to learn the difference between fun and comical. Fun doesn’t necessarily mean “LOL.” In this case, it means “fresh and actually enjoyable,” with very comic-booky dialogue, unlike its predecessor.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 29, 2013 @ 10:54 pm

  143. If the CGI killed Blade 2 for you, it should have sent Blade 1 straight into non-existence.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 29, 2013 @ 11:00 pm

  144. The CGI in 1 was no more than an extremely cheap, inadvertedly hilarious failure. Go watch that end scene again, with Frost’s “blood” when Blade cuts him in half and his bubblegummy explosion afterwards. I literally burst out laughing in the theater when I saw it, though I hate when people do that. It was so ridiculous I just couldn’t help it!

    Comment by bfg666 — July 29, 2013 @ 11:25 pm

  145. Ooh, yeah, that one! So bad it was not even remotely inadvertedly funny anymore, just pathetic. Followed closely by DD, Elektra, FF 1 & 2, Ghost Rider 1 & 2 and each Punisher movie.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 29, 2013 @ 11:36 pm

  146. He was much more Batman than any previous big screen adaptation. I did enjoy Burton’s vision but it was basically that, Burton’s vision, and it lacked the darkness of the comics. Then it went south big time with Schumacher’s camp-fest.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 29, 2013 @ 11:43 pm

  147. Blade 1 was a very cheap B actioner. Basically a wannabe dark Van Damme with fangs and terrible, terrible FX. Many praise its darkness but to me the tone falls flat due to the movie’s unintentional hilariousness. Between Snipe’s unbelievably poseur attitudes and the despicable FX, this film is a joke. Even the fight scenes are sub-par, as we can clearly see the fighters’ kicks and punches stop at least a good 10cm from their adversaries.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 30, 2013 @ 12:07 am

  148. Exactly. And there was Ron Perlman. Also, the CGI may have been terrible in SOME parts but in the first movie, ALL CGI was beyond unforgivable.

    Comment by bfg666 — July 30, 2013 @ 12:15 am

  149. Wow…there’s a worrying lack of taste in a few of the posts below this. Blade Trinity is crap – watchable, occasionally funny crap – but crap nonetheless. It is a worse movie than the other two on every level. Reynolds has a couple of funny lines, but other than that, the entire Night Stalkers group could not stand up to the screen presence of even an uninterested (and probably high) Snipes. Blade was simply more interesting than any of the characters around him, including Dracula.
X-Men 3, Spider-man 3, Ghost Rider 1 and 2…even the Fantastic Four films are all better made, better acted, and more fun to watch than Blade Trinity. If you like Reynolds so much, watch Green Lantern…it’s also superior to Blade Trinity in the watchable crap stakes.

    Comment by dennett316 — July 30, 2013 @ 3:24 pm

  150. Exactly. At least better. I love Del Toros Visual talent, and I thought the story was nice, but it’s the awsome fight scenes and the down to earth atmosphere that makes the first superior. The writer, Goyer, also co-wrote The Dark Knight movies, which I can see in another post you’re not a great fan of. And I agree. As I said, this kind of dead serious tone doesn’t work out for me, but it does in Blade.

  153. There are plenty of boobs in comic books. That is apart of the draw to begin with. How many Superheroines do you know that don’t show of their breasts, or their thighs in the comic books? Even Catwoman being dressed in completely latex is focused directly on her sexuality. There are very few superheroines who are completely and totally covered up.

  157. BLADE 3 would’ve been a great movie if they could’ve dumped the worthless major douchebag Wesley Snipes entirely and moved on using the secondary characters.

That’s what they could have done with a BLADE 4 movie.
While Wesley Snipes was in jail for years for tax evasion MARVEL should’ve dumped the drug addict idiot Wesley Snipes and just carried on the franchise without him. It would’ve been easier than you think given how he was almost absent entirely from the 3rd movie.

  158. So that’s why Haiti, Jamaica, and every black nation is now populated with super-genius black folks with flying cars, black-invented super-computers, the richest nations are black nations, and there are no hungry black people…

    Oh wait.

They’re still too dumb to even dig their own wells to grow food.

    (cough cough)
Full of crazy beans they are.
(Most blacks REALLY believe this to be true)

    1. The Mother Plane is made of the finest steel in Asia.
    2. It was made on the Island of Nippon (Japan) in 1929, and also took flight that same year.
    3. Black, Brown, Red and Yellow Scientists built the Mother Plane.
    4. The Scientists did not know what they were building.
    5. Her size is Half-mile by Half-mile square.
    6. Her shape is oval.
    7. Her speed is up to 9,000 miles per hour.
    8. Her flying ability is nine thousand (9,000) miles per hour in any direction, up or down, to or fro, in any direction without making a complete directional turn.
    9. Her contents are 1,500 small circular planes, as the devil calls them, “FLYING SAUCERS.”
    10. These small planes carry three (3) bombs each, they also shoot flames of fire.
    11. The Black men who pilot these small planes have been taught from the age of six that they are to do a special job.
    12. These pilots can hit any spot in America, blindfolded, as the Devil will soon see.
    13. The bombs that the small planes contain weigh two tons each.
    14. They are designed to drill into the Earth upon contact, and drill from one (1) to six (6) miles through stone and rock, and to explode, destroying civilization or any living matter (or life) within a fifty (50) mile radius.
    15. After these bombs explode, a poisonous gas is found to snuff out the remaining life, if any still exists.
    16. The purpose of the Mother Plane is to destroy the most wicked place ever to be on the planet Earth at any time (America, the Great Mystery Babylon).
    17. Her position is 40 miles out from the Earth’s sphere.
    18. She holds this position from 6 to 12 months at a time. When this time is up, the Mother Plane comes into the atmosphere to take in fresh air for our Brothers inside, then she retakes her position.
    19. At the dropping of the bombs, the flames will reach twelve (12) miles, in all directions.
    20. When the destruction comes, America will burn 390 years and take 610 years to cool off. The Great Mystery Babylon (America) will perish in the flames of fire. Allah will even cause the air which we breathe to ignite along with the atmosphere. Every atom will burn in and over America from a height of twelve(12) miles down.

  159. I think what you’re missing is that Wesley Snipes had a executive Producers role in the first 2 installment of the Blade series. The High ups towards the final film, hit him with a re-write and a director change. Hence Goyer, who had in mind as soon as he got a directorial position changed the direction of the movie. Remember Goyer originally wrote the first Blade script but it was Wesley and Goyer who got New Line to go with the movie. It was Wesley – it was Goyer. Wesley did what most people who get screwed over do – they act out. Wesley could have just left the movie but he couldn’t – he was under contract. So, his acting out has an advantage – now he doesn’t have to work with Goyer or make any more Blade movies. They attempted to move it to TV but it flopped horribly. Why? Because Wesley said in bluntly, “I am Blade”.

  160. HILARIOUS!!! This right here is why Michael Jai White should get the role in a reboot!!!

    Comment by Dedpool — August 8, 2013 @ 3:12 pm

  161. I’m not a professed FANatic of Blade, but I really enjoyed all three films (never having seen them before I bought all three and booked it thorugh them)
My honest opinion, I enjoyed blade Trinity the most (although #2 was really cool, just because of Norman Reedus, Luke Goss (great underrated actors) and Ron Pearlman (not his best film)).
It seems to me that alot of fans may just be thinking back to what they ‘thought’ the first two films were, and that nostalgia is hard to reconcile with. Like I said I enjoyed all of them, but the first film actually seemed more “camp” than any of them (unlike what the commenters and reviewer think). The second film was a tighter well constructed plot with a bigger budget, but certain parts just fell down for me, it seemed too linear, I don’t know that was just my impression.
Blade Trinity has a much sleeker feel, and yes it does have flaws but really…really…the other two had just as many if not more and it seems unfair to nitpick on the third film and not the other two.
So I can really only speak to my own experience, which says after watching all three in few days, Blade Trinity is the best one, the one I enjoyed the most anyway.
Would love to see a fourth film.

  162. I guess I’m the one person who actually did like Blade Trinity. I admit I saw the 3rd movie first and then went back and saw 1 and 2. The 3rd is my favorite while the first 2 are good. Funny how Snipes is such an asshole. Maybe prison changed that for him.

  163. I can list a slew of DARK STORIES, tho the characters themselves may not be dark. Tony Stark is an alcoholic (nothing fun about that), Cap Am lost all his loved ones and seen world war 2 and faced NAZIs which are NOT fun stories, Hulk is a child who was was abused and witnessed his mother abused by a foul father as well as fighting the best within every second of the day, Superman lost an entire planet and since these characters are extensions of our reality, imagine how u would feel as an alien in a world because urs blew up? these stories are a few and NONE are fun. Peter Parker propelled the death of his uncle and lives with an aunt that struggles to make ends meat. he deals with villains who are serial killers and brutal murderers…the idea of these concepts are not “fun” lol, that’s what I meant

    Comment by Kat87 — September 2, 2013 @ 6:13 am

  169. I disagree. It’s upsetting to hear that Wes was no good to work with. Such a gifted martial artist and capable stuntman should be in as many of the shots as possible. While I definitely feel it was the weakest of the trilogy I still found it highly enjoyable. Snipes’ character was consistent, Biel was hot, Reynolds was hilarious and in awesome shape for the movie, and Dominic Purcell was a convincing Dracula with a modern twist. Triple H added a nice touch and the gadgets were cool too. There are plenty of worse superhero movies…

    Comment by Brian Drill — September 6, 2013 @ 11:25 am

  170. I can’t deny the stories often have dark premises, but the way they are written usually is not very dark. On the contrary, the tone is often quite light, with a lot of humor. Even the grumpy Wolverine has occasional fits of funny one-liners, though his humor is more cynical than, say, Spidey. The comic book world is, for its most part, entertainment. True dramas are exceptions.

  172. That’s because they haven’t been able to get off their asses and do a wonder woman movie or a well done update to a supergirl movie. Even a bad version of those two are superior to the abysmal mess that was Catwoman. Berry was the wrong person, and only got the role because of her time as Storm. She was right for Storm in the xmen movies, but wrong for catwoman.

    Comment by Marcel Moreau — September 12, 2013 @ 2:10 am

  173. I liked Blade 3. Sure it was the weakest of the three, but there was a lot of good about it, and it was certainly better then the 3rd xmen movie and 3rd spiderman movie. As for worse superhero movie all time, there was some really shitty captain america and spiderman movies in the 70’s. 177. Funny, I found Oswalt’s and Natasha Lyonne acting to be very cheesy and out of sync/distracting. Kind of like they were trying to appeal to 10-12 year old kids. But the director, producer and whoever decided to cast them have to take blame for it as well.

  178. Here’s a freebie for those mindless saps who keep remaking movies that have already been made .#1 Kevin Smith needs to direct Aflac as batman ( the duck not Ben ) #2 horror movies that should never have a sequel. I can’t help but think Showgirls 2 starring snooki would take the prize. Besides Gary Busie already made gingerdead 2,3,4……. I thought about Ironside but Christopher Reeves wouldn’t return the phone call. Seriously there are 3 things that need to be made. Boondock Saints 3 is the first. Troy Duffy has to stop talking to the people at Valve and make it before Sean Patrick Flanery needs a hip transplant. Next on the list is MY idea for the Star Trek franchise tv series .I call it Empires Based around the time of Enterprise C (yup what a F-ing dork I am) I’m think blood pit MMA Klingon vs Gorn ,to the death. And my prize to those who want the next Blade instalment . I would make Whistler. Bridge the gap while Snipes and Christoperson are still able . And to that little pencil necked geek that’s going to pitch my idea to the people who make movie/tv shows remember who you sole it from caus I have about 10 more movies if you cut me in………

So, I had no right to demand my money back, but they sure as hell owed me for the portion of my life that was stollen as well as my employees that I shared the tickets with. It was an abomination and easily tops my list of worst movie of all time, not just a movie based on a comic book figure. It should have never left the studio and all but one copy destroyed (so it could be discovered later and treated like a Plan 9 type discovery 50 years down the road and given the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment).

Blade movies should be dark and gritty with lots of martial arts action. He’s not Spider-Man or Ironman. Keep the yucks down to a minimum. Del Toro understands horror and he set a perfect tone for the franchise. The story should also be top notch.

    Comment by Mike Wilson-Barrett — February 8, 2014 @ 4:33 pm

  190. Yes over and over and over and as a stand-alone film its good. In the canon of the Batman/Catwoman comics and story it’s not however they even said before the film was released that it was a standalone and should be viewed as that. Too many people attack the film due to their view it should be canon. It was a very good stand-alone film.

    Comment by Mike Wilson-Barrett — February 8, 2014 @ 4:36 pm

  191. I have never seen anyone attacking it solely because it isn’t canon. They attack it because it’s a piece of crap movie. If you enjoy it, that’s totally fine. If your opinion is that its a fantastic movie, that’s totally fine. But the overwhelming majority of people would completely disagree.
