The mini-series R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned is a prequel to the new movie R.I.P.D., which is currently set for release on July 19, 2013. The concept behind the story is that a select few who died are chosen to work for the “Rest In Peace Department.” The job is simple, chase down and kill any evil soul that’s managed to stay on earth longer than its supposed to have.

Roy Pulsipher dies and is asked to join the R.I.P.D. to find out why in the last century there hasn’t been any overflow of souls trying to hide on earth longer than they should. His partner is Crispin Mather, who from the looks of it, may have been a puritan and has signed on for another 100 years of service.

The story is pretty simple, nothing really special in my opinion. I’m sure the movie will be a lot better but as for a comic, I don’t feel like this does anything to make me want to see the movie. The artwork is mediocre and the characters and conversation aren’t really that intriguing. It’s a resurrected cowboy story with 100 years of service to make amends and find my killer.

Now-a-days with Youtube and the Internet, comics like this are really unnecessary unless they are giving you something that really adds to the story. Now, if this was released with the movie, then it would’ve made a hell of a lot more sense. If it was released after the movie it would’ve been great but to put it out now before the trailers have hit television doesn’t really sway a potential movie goers interests one way or the other.

The sad part is this comic based on a movie is actually based on a comic. The original R.I.P.D. was great. This however, leans so much on the movie that you really have nothing to go on if you didn’t know this was all based on a comic originally. Do yourself a favor hunt down the trade to R.I.P.D. instead and then when the movie comes out, read this comic.

  1. The film/comic R.I.P.D reminds me of the book “SpiritZoo” there is word of a lawsuit.

SpiritZoo: Heaven, Branding, catching bad guys, A plot to destroy heaven. (Heaven Bureau of Investigation) HBI

R.I.P.D: Heaven, Branding, catching bad guys, A plot to destroy earth. (Rest In Peace Department) R.I.P.D
