Think Tank Military Dossier plays like a behind-the-scenes episode of your favorite TV show. Obviously it’s not as good as the main story in Think Tank, but that’s not the goal. It’s just a little something extra to pique your interest for the next round of episodes.

The comic begins with a short scene of David Loren and his buddy Manish Pavi riffing on Twilight and monsters. This sets the stage for David to poke through DARPA’s personnel files, which has interesting tidbits on David, Manish, Mirra Sway, General Clarkson, Colonel Harrison, and Steven Sejic. These personnel files do include some spoilers from Think Tank #4 “” especially about the true mission of a certain character that David isn’t supposed to know about. This begs the question: is Military Dossier canon? Yeah, I’m looking way too deep into a fun, little, sidebar comic.

Ostensibly, the Think Tank Military Dossier is here to provide background information on the main characters. And it does. However, that’s not the real draw, nor the primary aim of the comic. The main course is Matt Hawkins‘ fascinating research on DARPA and its sometimes bizarre, but always wicked cool, projects.

Hawkins gives a brief overview of DARPA’s history, funding and current projects and runs down a list of DARPA’s massive successes like, oh, the freaking internet. He also covers some of DARPA’s epic fails, like telepathy, and a few conspiracy theories. Most of Hawkins’ information on DARPA is cited with internet linkage. I actually got sucked into doing my own research on the Z-Man project, which aims to suit up our troops with Spider-Man like climbing uniforms. The Z is for ZOMG!

Think Tank Military Dossier also includes an interview with “Science Dude,” an anonymous friend-of-a-friend who works for DARPA. Science Dude goes into some detail on projects such as synthetic telepathy and DARPA’s project management strategies.

Matt Hawkins is all about DARPA’s projects and history. His passion for the subject is widely apparent and makes an already interesting topic even that much more fun to dive into. The amazing part is that Hawkins has already weaved much of this information into the main Think Tank storyline without ever feeling like an information dump. Think Tank Military Dossier serves fans some juicy nuggets of background information and whets their appetites for the second story arc that hits stores later this month.
