Australian Metal To Get The Attention It Deserves In ‘Metal Down Under’ Documentary

Being an Aussie Metal Head, I’m particularly opinionated when it comes to heavy metal from my home country. While international fans are very aware of the impact of bands such as AC/DC’s early hard rock influence, many remain unaware of some of the hard-edged unyielding metal bands that have driven not only the scene down under, but the world of metal in general. Often ignored, I sometimes feel that Australian Metal gets the same respect as the creepy stepchild kept shrouded in the basement.

So it was with surprise that I was greeted with the news that filmmakers Nick Calpakdjian and David Hawkins are establishing a document of the history and influence of Aussie Metal with their upcoming film, Metal Down Under. As a fellow weirdo who self-proclaims to be your local Heavy Metal Historian, this makes me giddy with giggling glee. Uh… I mean, it makes me pump my fist in the air and sacrifice a puppy to Satan. Hails and horns, yo, hails and horns.

For Australian metal fans, this is probably the most exciting news to be released for quite some time. Being an addict of Sam Dunn’s Banger Films documentaries such as Global Metal, I often found myself somewhat exasperated that the land down under was greatly ignored in his documentaries. Well, here comes the down under metal, maggots!

Though the official press release states that bands such as Psycroptic, Pegazus, Psychonaut, and Blood Duster will be featured in the documentary, it’s also been announced that the mighty metal kings of my home base and old stomping grounds of Perth, Allegiance, will also be making an appearance for interviews; as will the grounded yet inspirational Steve Hughes of Slaughter Lord, who is now pursuing a highly successful stand-up comedy livelihood in the UK.

No, seriously, he does, take a look at this:

Realism, funny, yet still metal as fuck – the man is brilliant.

Unquestionably the documentary will also mention the impact of bands such as Rose Tattoo, The Angels, and maybe even Silverchair’s influence during the grunge craze of the 1990’s; but it is with high hopes that I reckon Calpakdjian and Hawkins will also spend some time on bands such as Mortal Sin, Damaged, The Mark of Cain, and Mortification, all of which were incredibly important for the evolution of Aussie Metal.

The formal press release for the announcement of Metal Down Under hits me like a punch in the mouth:

Animus Industries is producing a feature-length documentary about the history of heavy metal music in Australia. The film will trace the origins of metal in Australia and explore this ever-evolving genre of extreme music. From grindcore, thrash, death metal, black metal, hardcore, doom, melodic metal, sludge, power metal and the many more sub genres that exist, “Metal Down Under” will cover it all.

The history of metal in Australia has never been fully told and this film attempts to rectify that. Rather than a backstage interview film with a bit of live footage in between, “Metal Down Under” will tell the story of Aussie metal through formal interviews, archival, animation, candid observation-style footage and first person narration. The film will be accompanied by an interactive web site that will document the production of the film as well as profile and publicize many of the bands and identities involved in heavy metal. Released in conjunction with the documentary DVD will be a bonus DVD of music videos, interviews and extended material as well as a compilation CD.

Dude, this sounds like a fuckload of awesome, and personally, I can’t wait. Excuse me while I go listen to my playlist of Aussie Metal right now.

Metal Down Under is presently filming and under production, with a release date yet to be announced. Fans can follow the development of and news surrounding the movie at MetalDownUnder.com.
