“You better pray that unholy monster of yours doesn’t screw up.”Dick Jones, RoboCop

We’ve yet to see a teaser trailer or any official stills from José Padilha‘s 2014 remake of Paul Verhoeven‘s 1987 classic, RoboCop. That’s kind of weird, right? I mean, we’re talking about a movie that began filming in September – is it too much to ask for an 8″x10″ glossy of Alex Kinnaman as RoboCop?

You would think, with as much negative feedback as the film has been getting regarding the re-design of the RoboCop suit, the marketing team behind this remake would want to release some official images and try to stir up positive buzz, but alas, nothing but amateur set photos showing elements of the film out of context, forcing us to evaluate the film’s worth based on a handful of blurry iPhone pictures.

With that being said, a few more set photos have leaked that make me simultaneously nervous and (slightly) intrigued. First, there’s the EM-208 Humanoid Drone. Essentially, this is RoboCop 1.0 – a prototype for the technology that will ultimately resurrect Alex J. Murphy as a cybernetic law enforcer.

The EM-208 is part of OmniCorp’s product line, including the XT-908 Aerial Drone and the ED-209 Enforcement Droid. If the RoboCop suit is an amalgam of The Dark Knight and Iron Man, then this humanoid drone is reminiscent of the Hammer Drone from Iron Man 2 and other Iron Man characters like War Machine and Titanium Man.

Let’s be honest, RoboCop is going to need some high-power adversaries in this film – drug dealers won’t cut it anymore – so when the cyborg cop starts thinking for itself, OmniCorp will dispatch a squad of humanoid drones (along with a few aerial drones) to hunt down the rogue product, concluded by a Boss Fight final showdown with ED-209.

The second (blurry, possibly Instagram’d) new photo appears to be RoboCop’s suit in ‘Combat Mode.’ According to reviews of a leaked script and concept art, RoboCop’s suit has a Transformer-like capability that allows it to modify itself according to the environmental threat level.

The set pictures we’ve seen of Murphy’s black suit is no doubt his standard operating mode – but this, this is the equivalent of Super Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. This is RoboCop on Michael Bay Testosterone Supplements – a combination of Master Chief from Halo and Iron Man.

Until José Padilha and the producers of this RoboCop remake give us some legitimate images or footage to analyze, these set photos are all we have to go on. With the appearance of ‘Combat Mode,’ I can’t wait for all the RoboCop action figures: Deep Sea Adventure RoboCop, Arctic Expedition RoboCop, Shadow Stealth RoboCop, Jungle Camo RoboCop… I can only hope the new toys still have the awesome cap-firing mechanism in the back.

Official Synopsis:

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
