Bruce Willis Returns For ‘Sin City’ Sequel; Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Character Revealed

BAADASSSSS!   |

Bruce Willis

Robert Rodriguez has been promising a sequel to Sin City, the 2005 over-the-top noir comic adaptation he co-directed with its creator Frank Miller, since the original became a smash hit in theaters and on home video. Up until a few months ago there had not been much movement on the project outside of unfulfilled promises and expectations, but production on the upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – a sequel that will be a combination of previously published comic stories and all-new material conceived by Miller – has been going on at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas for a while now.

Every week seems to bring exciting news on the casting front with original stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Jaime King reprising their roles alongside new cast members Josh Brolin (playing Dwight, Clive Owen‘s character from the original), Jamie Chung (stepping in for Devon Aoki as the deadly sword-wielding Miho), Dennis Haysbert (replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncan as brutal underworld enforcer Manute), Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Christopher Meloni, and most interesting of all, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

During an interview at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Rodriguez was asked some questions regarding A Dame to Kill For, including whether or not Bruce Willis would be reprising his role from the 2005 original as the tough, tragic cop John Hartigan. “Bruce is back, so you’ll be seeing him,” Rodriguez said. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I would call that a solid confirmation.

It is unclear what role Hartigan will play in the events of the sequel since the character, much like the ones played by Rourke and Duncan, was dead by the end of Sin City, but seeing as how A Dame to Kill For is supposed to be a prequel to the three stories adapted for the first movie, the presence of these deceased characters makes sense from a storytelling standpoint. It even makes sense for Dwight to be played by a different actor this time since according to the story “The Big Fat Kill” that featured Owen in the role, he had gotten a facelift.

Rodriguez was also asked about the status of principal photography, which is being scheduled according to the availability of the movie’s various high-powered talent as it was on the first movie:

“The only story we’ve shot out is just one of the intro stories. That’s completely done. And the other ones we’ve been just sort of piecemealing, shooting bits and pieces as actors become available. So all three stories still have a little bit of footage to be shot in them.”

Since Gordon-Levitt is supposed to be playing a character in the new stories there has been a lot of speculation as to who he would be playing. Rodriguez was thoughtful enough to clear that little mystery up without giving too much away:

“He plays a gambler, a very cocky gambler who comes in and tries to beat the biggest villian in Sin City at his own game. The story is called The Long Bad Night. He beats the wrong guy in the game. Bad stuff happens to him. Bad stuff.”

Watch the full video for some more tantalizing details about the mystery casting of the titular Dame and Rodriguez’s experiences shooting the movie in 3D with the latest state-of-the-art cameras. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is set to open in theaters on October 4, 2013.
