Toby Jones May Be Reprising Arnim Zola Role In ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

Toby Jones, Arnim Zola Image

Captain America was able to look so young in the modern age by unwillingly (or willingly depending on your point of view) encasing his body in ice. But as for some other people, surviving for decades and not dying is another story. One character in Captain America lore that has the most perplexing presence in the modern age is that of Arnim Zola, played by Toby Jones in Captain America: The First Avenger.

In the comics, Zola was able to transfer his consciousness into a robotic body, which allowed him quasi-immortality and the ability to continue to carry out his mad scientist experiments. As crazy as that sounds, it’s quite possible that we could see that happening in the sequel as Jones has said that he will reprise his character for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In an interview with HeyUGuysUk, the actor nearly confirmed his return to the franchise saying “It looks like I will be.”

Bit of a spoiler, Zola was captured by Captain America and returned to the United States where he gave vital information about Hydra so that he would not be executed. We never learn about Zola’s fate in the film, though comic book lore tells us he survives by transferring his consciousness into a robotic body.

Of course with such a short answer, we cannot elaborate on what form we will be seeing him in or if he will be there to shoot flashbacks for the film. But hey, the thought of seeing an image of Jones’ head like in the header image above would be a lot of fun. The film will take place in the present day so we may very well see Jones’ head parading on the screen.

Chris Evans returns to reprise his role as Captain America, and he will be joined by Anthony Mackie who plays The Falcon. Frank Grillo will play the deadly assassin known as Crossbones. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in theaters on April 4, 2014.
