Rainbow

Rising, the bone crunching, sonic molten lava of a record by Rainbow, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.00, as part of Amazon’s massive Browse over 2000 albums on sale this month for only MP3 Album Sale (2,000 albums for only $5 each).

This album, the second by the hard rock/heavy metal quintet, is arguably one of their best. Comprised of ex-Deep Purple pyrotechnical wizard on the guitar and man in black Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Carey on keyboards, the taut bang your head against the wall rhythm section of Jimmy Bain and Cozy Powell on bass and drums respectively, and the late, champion of the high notes vocally Ronnie James Dio, Rising is an album which is a cornerstone and A-list achievement of the entire heavy metal spectrum. Starting off with “Tarot Woman,” the record has a kind of second generational Deep Purple feel to it, and colored by a lot of the hard sounds of that era (the mid 1970s), but those soaring vocals of Dio make Rainbow a band all its own.

Blackmore, who although made his mark and then some in Deep Purple, seems even more in his element here, and his playing is at once intense, strong, and with an effortless ease that gives him a second career in his genre. He takes the heavy blues he did in Purple and creates a whole new set of dynamics here; stealthy arrangements punctuate the fray as the band keeps it tight. The proceedings get charged up like a plug in a wall socket that’s frayed at the ends with the chug-a-chug of “A Light in the Black” and the full tilt boogie with the hard edges of “Run With the Wolf.”

But for sure, the album’s centerpiece – a centerpiece of all heavy metal actually – has to be “Stargazer,” which, with its galloping take-not-a-prisoner-ever drum opening, to the back-up string arrangements by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the piercing phoenix in the sky vocals by Dio and especially the Blackmore solo in the middle bridge section which is almost impossible to take when listened to on headphones, it’s that incredibly magnetic, gives the band an even further dimension.

Without question, Rising is a record that does just that, from the opening note to the very last one, soaring higher and higher with each listen.
