Doctor Who Series 7 Returns March 30

It took me a little while to write this, because I was so electrified at the news that I was bouncing around the room in excitement. I think the fans call that a “squee moment.” But here it is, Whovians: The BBC has announced that Series 7 of Doctor Who will resume on TV screens on Easter weekend, beginning Saturday, March 30, 2013.

The second portion of Series 7 will pick up where The Snowmen Christmas Special left off, in which the Doctor (Matt Smith>) begins his quest to find Clara Oswin Oswald (>Jenna-Louise Coleman>) and unravel the answers behind this different and enigmatic companion. Who is she? Is she a Dalek Person Thingy? Is she split up across space and time? Is she secretly a villain of the Doctor to take revenge upon him for the fans due to the Sixth Doctor’s fashion sense? At this moment, I honestly couldn’t even begin to guess – showrunner Steven Moffat has me "Moffucked" over this one!

Series 7b kicks off with the episode entitled The Bells of St. John, written by Moffat, and directed by Colm McCarthy. The remaining season will broadcast a total of 8 episodes, including a Neil Gaiman-penned episode called The Last Cyberman.

The finale of Series 7, currently untitled, will be (as traditionally has been the case) written by Steven Moffat, and may lead in to what will happen later in the year.

But what will happen later in the year?

I previously had speculated that the BBC might run straight into Series 8 for 2013, but this is not the case at all. In fact, I was so incorrect about my prediction, I might as well have said that the Doctor would turn into a purple elephant and his new companion would be a Neanderthal called Mike. At least it would have been an amusing prediction.
A recent BBC banner placed during the London Toy Fair, however, reveals their plans”¦

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, apparently, is confirmed by the banner – to be a single episode running for an hour. The banner states it will run some time in Autumn 2013, but it will most likely air on the specific anniversary date of November 23 (or at least close to it). I’m a little bemused by the manner of the announcement though – you would think this would be the kind of news that the BBC would accompany with fireworks or something. Instead – very low key”¦ oh well!

What also captivates me about the banner though is that there is NO mention of a Christmas Special for 2013. This has to be erroneous – it just wouldn’t be Christmas without a Doctor Who episode! I mean, Santa I can do without”¦ but no Doctor? Stop with this horseplay immediately I say!

But what also is announced is the 90-minute drama based on the real-life events encompassing the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963. Entitled An Adventure In Space And Time, the one-shot drama will be a celebration of how the show was created, and how everything came together.

The other show will be looking at Classic Doctor Who, called Doctor Who Revisited, which will also be shown on BBC America throughout the year. The first revisiting hits American screens on January 27, and you can expose your eyeballs to the trailer at the bottom of the post.

So we have Doctor Who Revisited, Series 7b, the 50th Anniversary Special, and An Adventure In Space And Time all officially announced; along with the strong likelihood (fingers crossed!) of the annual Christmas Special.

Series 8, conversely, seems to be another matter altogether. There is no official word yet on what will be expected for the 8th season of Nu Who, though I would hazard a guess and state that it will most likely be a regular season televised across the Spring and Fall of 2014.

In the meantime, however, we have the next chapter of Series 7b to countdown towards – March 30, here we come.

It is in times like these I really do wish I had a TARDIS!
