Take This Waltz, is the follow up film for director/writer Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead), whose previous film, Away From Her, was released in 2006. Away From Her was a heartbreaking tale about a husband dealing with his wife, who is fighting Alzheimer disease, and its affect on their marriage. Well she seems to love the whole married couple dealing with an issue breaking apart their relationship. But in this case, it’s not a medical disease tearing them apart, it’s someone just wanting more.

Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) plays Margot, a writer for tourist brochures. On assignment, she bumps into a young man, Daniel, played by Luke Kirby (Cra$h & Burn), and they keep bumping into each other on the way home. And to top it off, she finds out that he actually lives in same neighborhood, just a few houses down. And with that reveal, she also tells him that she is married, to Lou, played by Seth Rogen (50/50), who is also a writer, a cook book writer, who is currently into chicken.

Margot and Lou have an interesting relationship: it seems that they are in love with each other, but it also seems that maybe something is a little off between these two. She seems to act almost childish around him, and they like to play games, telling each other interesting ways they want to kill each other. Like I said, a little weird.

Margot keeps running into Daniel and they continue to flirt and hint to each other about wanting to start something. It’s playful flirting at first, but it gets more serious with each encounter after that. It also goes so far as to them basically playing out a sexual experience between the two of them verbally in a restaurant.

And with most movies about this subject, there comes a time when the affair is revealed, and most of the time, the choice is not always a popular one. But with this movie, this offers an interesting point of view with the after effects of that decision, and we learn that sometimes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Williams has come along way from the days at the Creek, and always seems to end up in movies that deal with horrible relationships. But even though some may question her choice in movies, she once again gives a great performance, as she seems to be spastic with the varied emotions in the movie.

And an interesting side note, my previous review dealt with alcoholism; well, it is brought up in this movie with Lou’s sister Geraldine, played by Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program).

Uncomfortable pretty much sums up this movie, for various reasons. But it was also a very interesting movie, and I am not exactly sure how I feel about it. There are times when stuff seems to be a little too convenient; best example, the whole finding out he lives just a few doors down. You feel sorry for Lou, as his wife is cheating on him, but you also come to a point and wonder how he doesn’t realize what is happening sooner. And with Margot, you hate her pretty much during the whole movie, but she learns a little lesson in the end, she kind of gets what she deserves. It’s not a movie you want to watch if you are in a happy relationship, or one if nudity makes you uncomfortable; like the rating says, there is graphic nudity, and if you have seen The Master, you kind of know what you are in for. Not one you want to sit down and watch with your parents, if you know what I mean. Overall, it’s nothing you need to seek out to see, but if it ends up on Watch Instant, worth at least a viewing.

Starting to feel like I need to watch a happy, and less depressing movie next, otherwise I might slip into a funk. And you shall see with my next review, for a TV show on Netflix, that the funny will be had. So be on the lookout for that review coming soon. A few other newer movies I want to see, but it will come down to money and time to decide which ones I will end up seeing.
